Umm all IBM's top of the line machines are power based and the power 6 exists the bluegene line the fastest machines in the world are PPC based.

As for apple switching it's because IBM didn't want to make a low volt G5 for a while the X86 macs were slower then the G5s in cpu bound operations.

Earth simulator held the number one spot longer then any machine in history has. As for individual cpu power the NEC SX series are still the fastest by far they make xeons look slow.
