I was stationed in Baumholder, went with a couple buddies, unbelievable crowd! We had boda bags of Southern Comfort, and thes guys had a plastic jug of wine, it was huge, it looked like they tore it off the back of a tractor sprayer. Man we got trashed. Thanks Gerry Mellor for taking care of me, and Jack Staten who made it all possible, never forget that day ever. Bunny bunny foo foo hopping thru the forrest hehehe
I had never heard of Bon Jovi and the album (Slippery When Wet) had barely been released and they kicked ass! - I'm glad you included that shot of them climbing the scaffolding - I have an image in my head of JBJ climbing it waving a US Flag. You just knew "You give Love a Bad Name" was a winner and it went #1 about 3 months later on November 29. It was great to see that success starting there. (I know they had albums before that - but the success started right then and there).
I know we passed several people to the front security - it was pretty scary actually - by the time Def Leppard played we had escaped to safer areas farther back. This was the BEST concert ever - I went because I already LOVED Scorpions and Ozzy, and liked MSG and Def Leppard too - but Bon Jovi really stole the day -
OMG!! Thanks so much for sharing this - I WAS THERE!!! - We were in the Army stationed at Sullivan Baracks in Mannheim - this concert was free-for-all seating and we went early and were right up at the stage until the crowd just literally crushed us - you had no control of your body movements at all - your body would just float along without your feet even touching the ground. I think someone did die -
I saw the Monsters of Rock tour in Seattle, Wa. July 27, 88 at the King Dome with Van Halen, Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica, and Kingdom Come. That was the second time that year I got to see the Scorpions play. Brings back memories of good times!
I was in Nurnberg Zeppelinfeld the day before. It didn't rain, cloudy and overcast but at least no rain. Great day. I'll never forget seeing Scorpions in front of a home crowd as conquering heroes. Lepps were amazing too, Steve Clark was on fire. Ozzy just drove everybody crazy : even the bikers gangs stopped fighting when he was playng. Unforgettable experience.
@strikedn fuck yes , best of my life!!!! I was stationed at Mkee Barraks and we got there the night before and were in the first 20 going in , I remember running full blast to the front and looked back and realized we were the only ones running ...Germany was so laid back and fun.....
It was raining too much when MSG was on stage -- they were only able to play a few songs because of it -- but Def Leppard played their entire badass set in the rain. Remember Bruce Dickenson brought Joe Elliot a large beach umbrella out half-way through. The rain cleared up for Ozzy and the Scorpions though, and hadn't started yet during Warlock and Bon Jovi.
I was there. It was awesome!!! Wish I could go back, if only for a day. They should have included a pic of the guy passed-out near the stage with the cuffed jeans and blue Nike track shoes. I wondered that day if the dude would make it home alive. He looked like an Army guy from the nearby Mannheim base. I was Air Force, had made the trip up from Ramstein with my buds.
