  • Lady in Black...awesome shit.

  • Keith Whitley

  • i LIKE it :)

  • Love how this Gemini sings!

  • I didn't realize this song was actually considered to be a countrysong until I was humming it and a big ol' cowboy asked me how I knew that song.... hahaha, whuh? It's a good song dude, that's how I know it... radio waves are a fantastic invention huh?

  • The lyrics in the song are among the very best i have heard in my 49 plus years, i had this on tape back in 1980 or so while serving on the USS Mt Whitney in the US Navy and it sounds just as great today. peace!

  • thanks within space for posting, I can relate to this song so well.

  • the woman is awesome great song

  • 16 people are idiots with no concept of beauty

  • @tathagata40 It's wierd, I am blind to beauty, and I love this song

  • @tradition4life1983 yep, that's pretty weird.

  • awesome song

  • @menineteenhundred - Who is "Morales," and why do we need him or her back?

  • Rodney Crowell will always be one of my heroes.

  • I've been aching for more than seven years for good country music. Thanks for posting!

  • good song...what the hell happened to country music?

  • Cool Tune..

  • ELO and Rosanne Cash may not perfectly fit as puzzle pieces. Some days you use computers, and some days you don't.

  • Comment not directed at every post but I'm using the shotgun approach. Why do you all blither about a great song? It;s a tune by a talented singer. Appreciate it.

Could have been this or that but it is what it was.

Personal comments and crap are just so wrong and off target.

  • Wow. This song is pretty amazing.

  • @menieteenhundred also, when was the last time you went to a show? you say that if someone where to go to a concert now they would here a computer voice. As someone who goes to shows on a weekly basis i can say that is absolutely not true. You are making blanket statements based on what you perceive is the state of the music industry without actually understanding it or taking the time to research.

  • @menineteenhundred Have you ever considered fact that you are the lazy one? Great music isn't exclusive to one generation. Wonderful stuff was released before and after this record. It takes some effort to go out and find great music that appeals to you personally, but it's not that it isn't being released or doesn't exist. The world isn't lazy because they don't come to you with great music seeking your approval, you are lazy for not going out and finding it yourself

  • Great song. Johnny was VERY PROUD that his daughter had a Top Ten hit song. He was so proud that he had a child that could write and perform her own song independantely make it a chart topper.

  • Does this sound like an Electric Light Orchestra recording to you?

  • @arhuxtable musically, yes.

  • @arhuxtable no

  • sakna johnny Cash R.I.P.

  • One of my favs, too. And she was only 23!

  • Still listening. Great work Roseanne

  • Great song.

  • Possibly the best song that's ever been recorded with the Cash name on it. No lie!

  • Her best song and if played more on pop stations at thetime it would of been a grammy winner...She has a great voice .

  • mine too love this song

  • This is a great song.... hard to believe it is country :-))

  • ive loved this song for years and still do today

  • Have the original album on wax .....sounds as good today as the day I bought it. Best country voice since Patsy Cline

  • Beautiful song. I always found it was too short though, it always left me wanting more...

  • i love rosanne cash-seven year ache.gijoe989.

  • still a great song to listen to!

  • Oh, Rosanne you are still my favorite female "country" voice ever. Love you and loved your mom & dad

  • @menineteenhundred I agree with you that widespread use of autotune is a sad development. However, if you think drugs use is new to music, you really don't know much about the history of popular music. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, the list goes on and on. They ALL took drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. I'm not saying it's good, but it's fact.

  • @dusygibbons I think the real trick would be to try and list the ones who didnt take them. LOL!!!

  • @dusygibbons HaHa isn't that the truth!

  • Rossanne Cash invented coins.

  • And her late father Johnny invented the bills. lol

  • '80s country was not of this world. what a magical time for music. never again. never.

  • @Metamorphosique Cool story, bro.

  • This is a great song. I never new she knew my life! Keep writing, always

    Db

  • gentile easy cash music love that family had 7 yr ache 20 times

  • brings good memories of 1981

  • Each person has thair own tast in music.

You can like your Lady GayGay. I"ll keep listing to my goat ropeing

    music

  • One of the best songs ever written and performed.

  • @arcadie07 I was lucky enough to be a drummer in a country band when it came out. I got to play it many times. I can't put my finger on the reasons, but I agree with your assessment. I never seems to get old.

It seems too simple to be as good as it is, but something about it reaches deep inside of all of us. (Rosanne's voice and Rodney's production is part of it, obviously.) Great song. Great album.

  • @arcadie07 I love this song.

  • I think this song sets the standard.

    Good job Rosanne!!

  • ..."Girls in the bars thinking who is this guy

But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies"... WOW!

  • This is an exceptional song and a wonderful recording. Love it!

  • I keep this 45 record in my jukebox, play it all the time.

  • Great song. Intelligent lyrics (especially for country. No offense.), great medley, and beautifully matched voice.

A classic. Will never be forgotten.

  • @buck62sugar You're right. Pop music has so much more smarter lyrics than country. "WOAH WOAH caught in a bad Romance"- Lady Gaga.

  • This song haunts me.

  • Rosanne hit #22 in Billboard, 7-18-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Rosanne Cash, such a great talent. This song sounds awesome on the radio....... still.

  • Bass players, if you love that little run at 2:41 or 2:57 gimme a "hell yeah"

  • @OneHitWonderGuy

Hell yeah! So smooth, it almost sounds fretless. Friggin Nashville studio bassists in the 70s and 80s were the shit brotha.

  • Our band has been covering this song for a few years now. One of those great songs that we all enjoy doing.

  • Great song....Should have been a top 10, but what do they know

  • I was going trough a diovce and this sure hit home

  • This is one of my favorite songs. Ever! Not a lot of songs are written that we'll. Its just beautiful...

  • what year was this song made?

  • @allenrnewbauer

The song was Rosanne Cash's first #1 on the Country Singles chart from May of 1981. Although the song made her - and I hate to say this - a One-Hit Wonder on the Pop Singles Chart, peaking at #22 in July 1981, on the Country chart she racked up 10 more #1 songs over the next 8 years. Rosanne is amazing!!!

  • @OneHitWonderGuy thanks very much, i have heard this song sence i was a kid and have always liked it.

  • @allenrnewbauer

What makes me feel old is that I was about your age when this song became a hit!!

  • goodness I love this song and had but forgotten it...thanks for posting it. I have saved it to my favorites.

  • Have always loved this song. Thanks.

  • I love it...one of the best country songs!!! Perfect!!

  • This is a great song to sing at karoke a good song to sing at the club lol

  • love this song :-)

  • WOW, shoot me, in the DAWN foot, ~ BABY: whatan D*O*L*L "THIS" girl "IS"!!

  • DAMIT ~ TOTAL!! );})) !!

  • GREAT SONG

    thanks for sharing

  • I like the studio version better than the released version. Sounds clearer. Still a wonderful song either way.

  • If anybody is on twitter and is a Roseanne fan. She is freakin hilarious on twitter. Such a great person, and a great singer those two don't go together much anymore

  • the 13 people who don't like this song are ah STUPID this is like one of the best songs she does.

  • Sounds like the instrumentation of the Electric Light Orchestra.

  • The reason they dont sing like this anymore; THE SONGWRITERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PERFORM. Greats like Tom T Hall, Juice Newton, and others are pushed out by the CASH machine. ITS CALLED "Show Business", where they mostly show US the business.Suzy Boggus had given me hope for a minute.Outbound Plane WAS A RETRO sounding classic. So was Leann Rimes: Blue album. They killed her. Have any of you heard : The Lovell Sisters? They are good, but NON COMMERCIAL so they have a hard time.

  • I went alone to a bar after a seven year marriage broke up and this was playing on the juke. I listen to it now and then...

  • never gets old...timeless

  • I learned a line dance to this song in the 80's only we were calling those a 4 corners dance . Also sharpened up my waltz step , two step and introduced the Texas 10-step , also the Cotton Eyed Joe to the couple that was giving the instruction . I had got a bit of bootleg instruction from the gals in Country clubs overseas . I'm from northern Maine but I miss the honky-tonks down south where they know how to dance & don't crowd the floor with their anything goes foolishness

  • saw a record in my friends basement and havent heard this song since i was little

  • Thumbs up is your STILL listening to this in 2011

    ((((:

  • @1Animeperson

You are right; this is a great song..............country or any genre.

  • @1Animeperson Sure am. BTW, it's 'you're'.

  • @DaveWollenberg It's a music video, not English class....

  • Nice. Great song.

  • She Is Fantastic

  • great song :)

  • @LAW - more like 20+ years....

  • never, ever do I tire of this song! I listened to her even when I hated country music, she's that awesome!

  • I love this song. One of the top ten country songs ever...

  • @crydun2004 i agree fully not a very well known song but it is absolute gold and the lyrics really make you think of your own experiences

  • what is this song actually about?

  • @amandaroshell ...I think it's about a heartbroken guy pining for his lost love after 7 years, and he's going around tryin to drown his sorrow in booze and ladies (who are rather besotted with him), and the "storyteller" (singer) is trying to get him to get him to forget the past and get on with it...something like that...

  • @ALTDOK666 thank you very much

  • @ALTDOK666

    Wow, that makes sense, thanks.

The two best storytelling music, Classic Country, and Reggae. Sometime very hard to decipher.

  • i did not so many are homosexual

  • american idol hooo hooo this country has beome so wal-martised and generic

  • amirican idol......oooo hoooo

  • what a babe

  • It only took me 2 years to get the old "ache."

  • o sangue do pai em suas veias não tem jeito.

  • I remember dancing to this song when I was a lil girl!

  • hell, there's nobody around who can write music this good anymore...

  • Born in 83. One song engrained in my soul.

  • great song, takes me back to the 80's

  • Genitics run deep in the "Cash" Dynasty! I lv This!!

  • "Heartaches are heroes when their pockets are full." How could she NOT write that line and think to herself, "Damn, THAT'S good."

  • This song is true to its words and the one

that wrote it lived every verse of it only

the best song writers walk those shoes.

  • Have not heard this one is a while. Need to get the cd out again and put in the car for a long trip.

  • Someone should put up "Somewhere in the Stars"

  • As good as this song is, and it is good, it was the beginning of the end for the country of the 60s and 70s. The New Traditionalists tried to fight against the onslought in the mid-80s but it was no use--the amalgamation of country and pop had truly begun and culminated with Garth Brooks and Shania Twain.

  • country music used to have good, creative lyrics like this, and thats why it was good. Maybe people say they hate country because today its not like that, its more like a formula. Same old kind of hooks, same choruses, with the lyrics are always about "being country". Almost as if they are trying too hard to be "country". Back then they just were country, and it was authentic.

  • Comment removed

  • "Cash" genetics!! Always loved this!!

  • I'm likin dis song...I don't like country in general but I appreciate artists with nice voices,it don't matter what genre of music this is suppose to be in.I like music with catchy tones & sincerity...

  • @N8tivequeen8 I love country music. Why must everyone who finds a country song/artist they do like have to get all hung up about it being "country". I never go to Rock songs and say "I dont like Rock music, but".... etc. etc etc.

  • The lyrics are great, but I think the line,"The boys say, 'when is HE gonna give us some room'" should be, "The boys say, 'when is SHE gonna give us some room'"--that makes more sense.

  • @happy543210 It means the guys want him to leave so they can get the girls.

  • @happy543210 Not at all. The guys want room because this guy in the song is basically absorbing all of the attention and there's no "room" for anyone else to get the girls when he's around.

  • Like daughter, like father!!! Excellent love song!

  • Another Cash masterpiece. We need to hear it more often on the radio.

  • Vince Gill said he had he hardest time figuring out the 'changes' in this song...said they were subtle, but deadly...I love this song so much!!!

  • Sounds like the Electric Light Orchestra is backing up Roseanne here.

  • Baby what is so great 'bout sleepin' downtown? what a line...for any song. Go Miss Cash

  • i actually like this song its awesome :)

  • COMO ME ENCANTA ESTE TEMA , TE GUSTA RO.?

  • The melody is just awesome.

  • I guess there's at least 10 people who have never heard real music!

  • Why do I hear Ann from Heart?

  • Like father, like daughter. Brilliant.

  • this my girlfriend's favourite song :) Boy do i love her...

  • Billboard's #97 song of '81. Rosanne hit #1 country, #6 AC, #22 pop, in Billboard. Many country stations refused to play it, 'cause they claimed it had a 'pop' drumbeat. LOL! God bless ya, Miss Rosanne!

  • This is real country. The country they make today isn't country, i don't know what the hell it is actually. What happened to these days?

  • I wish we still had music like this. Nowadays all you see and hear are a bunch of kids trying to sound like rockstars! Whatever happend to real country music and lyrics, for example, Ann Murray, Rosanne Cash, The Judds, Trisha Yearwood, The Eagles, The Little River Band, Steve Earle.....just sayin'.

  • Doesn't hurt when Rodney Crowell was your husband for a while and wrote for ya.

  • Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, all make really boring formula music

  • Call me wrong, but back in '81 or so, this was considered a pop/country crossover song and the country purists dumped on it because it used one of those newfangled "synthesizer" things. That upbeat drum pattern damn near bordered on disco too. Of course, I was a nondiscriminational youth, and I liked it! Don't forget that there were haters back then too. I can remember the negativity surrounding these "pop country" crossover songs perpetuated by the purists.

  • @jazzliscious13

I was born in 83, so I didn't care about music until the mid 1990s, and got my VERY first cd in '99. Lol...now I LOVE music!

  • this is the best video i like on here

  • Good song, I like the old country and the new.

  • Great Song!! Thanks for posting :)

  • I love this damn song. great music! period! There are no songs like this today.

  • Girls in the bars thinking who is this guy

But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies

You look so careless when they're shooting that bull

Don't you know heartaches are heros when their pockets are full...

    Yep!!!

  • I was blessed to hear Rosanne and Rodney live in 1980 and both of them autographed an album for me. Still listening to their music. Thanks for the post. Please keep listening, folks-this is real country.
