I didn't realize this song was actually considered to be a countrysong until I was humming it and a big ol' cowboy asked me how I knew that song.... hahaha, whuh? It's a good song dude, that's how I know it... radio waves are a fantastic invention huh?
The lyrics in the song are among the very best i have heard in my 49 plus years, i had this on tape back in 1980 or so while serving on the USS Mt Whitney in the US Navy and it sounds just as great today. peace!
Comment not directed at every post but I'm using the shotgun approach. Why do you all blither about a great song? It;s a tune by a talented singer. Appreciate it.
Could have been this or that but it is what it was.
Personal comments and crap are just so wrong and off target.
@menieteenhundred also, when was the last time you went to a show? you say that if someone where to go to a concert now they would here a computer voice. As someone who goes to shows on a weekly basis i can say that is absolutely not true. You are making blanket statements based on what you perceive is the state of the music industry without actually understanding it or taking the time to research.
@menineteenhundred Have you ever considered fact that you are the lazy one? Great music isn't exclusive to one generation. Wonderful stuff was released before and after this record. It takes some effort to go out and find great music that appeals to you personally, but it's not that it isn't being released or doesn't exist. The world isn't lazy because they don't come to you with great music seeking your approval, you are lazy for not going out and finding it yourself
Great song. Johnny was VERY PROUD that his daughter had a Top Ten hit song. He was so proud that he had a child that could write and perform her own song independantely make it a chart topper.
one if the best songs ever. very evocative. there are alot of layers...love that guitar that comes on..like rain.......:lookin' for somethin you mighta forgot"
@menineteenhundred I agree with you that widespread use of autotune is a sad development. However, if you think drugs use is new to music, you really don't know much about the history of popular music. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, the list goes on and on. They ALL took drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. I'm not saying it's good, but it's fact.
@arcadie07 I was lucky enough to be a drummer in a country band when it came out. I got to play it many times. I can't put my finger on the reasons, but I agree with your assessment. I never seems to get old.
It seems too simple to be as good as it is, but something about it reaches deep inside of all of us. (Rosanne's voice and Rodney's production is part of it, obviously.) Great song. Great album.
The song was Rosanne Cash's first #1 on the Country Singles chart from May of 1981. Although the song made her - and I hate to say this - a One-Hit Wonder on the Pop Singles Chart, peaking at #22 in July 1981, on the Country chart she racked up 10 more #1 songs over the next 8 years. Rosanne is amazing!!!
If anybody is on twitter and is a Roseanne fan. She is freakin hilarious on twitter. Such a great person, and a great singer those two don't go together much anymore
The reason they dont sing like this anymore; THE SONGWRITERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PERFORM. Greats like Tom T Hall, Juice Newton, and others are pushed out by the CASH machine. ITS CALLED "Show Business", where they mostly show US the business.Suzy Boggus had given me hope for a minute.Outbound Plane WAS A RETRO sounding classic. So was Leann Rimes: Blue album. They killed her. Have any of you heard : The Lovell Sisters? They are good, but NON COMMERCIAL so they have a hard time.
I learned a line dance to this song in the 80's only we were calling those a 4 corners dance . Also sharpened up my waltz step , two step and introduced the Texas 10-step , also the Cotton Eyed Joe to the couple that was giving the instruction . I had got a bit of bootleg instruction from the gals in Country clubs overseas . I'm from northern Maine but I miss the honky-tonks down south where they know how to dance & don't crowd the floor with their anything goes foolishness
@amandaroshell ...I think it's about a heartbroken guy pining for his lost love after 7 years, and he's going around tryin to drown his sorrow in booze and ladies (who are rather besotted with him), and the "storyteller" (singer) is trying to get him to get him to forget the past and get on with it...something like that...
As good as this song is, and it is good, it was the beginning of the end for the country of the 60s and 70s. Billboard's #97 song of '81. Rosanne hit #1 country, #6 AC, #22 pop, in Billboard. Many country stations refused to play it, 'cause they claimed it had a 'pop' drumbeat. LOL! God bless ya, Miss Rosanne!
I wish we still had music like this. Nowadays all you see and hear are a bunch of kids trying to sound like rockstars! Girls in the bars thinking who is this guy
...But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies
You look so careless when they're shooting that bull
Don't you know heartaches are heros when their pockets are full...
Yep!!!

I was blessed to hear Rosanne and Rodney live in 1980 and both of them autographed an album for me. Still listening to their music. Thanks for the post. Please keep listening, folks-this is real country.
