@BF3alien ACTA more or less spreads current American copyright law around the world, which although is not as bad as SOPA/PIPA, but it is still unfair and other countries should not have to follow our guidelines. I ask my European viewers to stand up against this!
go to the article from los angeles times they talk about the shut down..
its sad to know what ever freedom we have is getting taken away like this... that's just the beginning it's going to get disturbing ..the funny thing is that Megaupload and it's subsidiaries don't actually own the content on their servers. They only provide off site storage for their users and the public at large. Just as YouTube or Vimeo does....
It takes 5 seconds to copy and paste online. A phone call is going to take you 5 to 10 minutes. You've spent a far greater portion of your day on the phone call, and, again, you are perceived as caring more because of the additional time (and your phone bill) taken.
But phone calls and paper letters are given more weight. Why? simply because of the additional time and resources required. There is zero effort involved in cut/pasting an internet petition. To actually take the time to draft a letter, print a letter, obtain an envelope and actually spend your own money to communicate with your congresspeople shows you're more serious. You flat-out spent more time and money expressing your view. Same thing with a phone call.
If you want your senator and/or congressperson to pay some attention to you, you need to either be CALLING them, or WRITING them--an, by writing, I mean you need to send a piece of paper in an envelope with an actual stamp on it. Why? These guys have staffs that have to OPEN and READ the mail, or who have to answer the phone and talk with you. Of course these calls and letters are logged (both for security purposes and purposes of classification.).
Most internet petitions can also be ignored because, well, it's too easy. There's absolutely no effort involved in cutting an pasting a news article link. You feel you've done something. You haven't. Many emails are largely ignored. Again, there's the ease of email, (Remember, 5, 6, 7, 10 email addresses per person) which just makes it easier to flood an email box with identical, copy/pasted emails.
Circulating an internet petition isn't going to get you anywhere. Many (dare I say, most) of the congresspeople who will be voting on this know nothing about the internet. But one thing they do know is how easy it is to set up multiple Internet identities. Internet petitions are largely ignored, since a person can generate 5, 6, 7, 10 email addresses and sign a petitions 5, 6, 7, 10 times
@TheJaydamasta how can a bill that hasn't passed yet shut down Megaupload? They are already using SOPA like tactics....I have been telling people this for ages. Look up "In Our Sites".
We're all probably overreacting. I wish google would be as spoken on healthcare. It's probably not as important to you Rich but it has more consequences no matter what side you fall on, for example.
i would but im not american, so cant exactly vote them out haha but i hope you americans fucking vote! this shit affects the world. kinda bullshit that an american law is going to affect everyone. please vote people.
hey rich, today i was watching MSNBC, and they were talking about google, and how it will hide its logo. Then they talked about SOPA for 10 secs, and after that they talked about a drawing contest for like 5 mins! i was mad on how they would just ignore this bill.
I called all five of my representatives today. Left messages for every single one. When I spoke to Congressman Francisco Canseco's assistant, he assured me that the Congressman STRONGLY opposes both SOPA and PIPA. He said the current language of the bills is far to vague and would give the government unauthorized authorithy over the freedom of information. I told his assistant to tell the Congressman that he would have my vote! This was the only verbal confirmation I got out of the five called.
@BallSackGaming he didnt watch his video from yesterday to understand! but basically he put them all on private in protest of sopa/pipa cuz today is a huge black out or whatever they are calling it in pretest of teh same thing. as a lot of major sites including google are doing. in a prolly vein attempt at getting senates attention and hopefully to make it known we do not want this bill passed
@Distrub122334 Not that much. Website owners would be held responsible for illegal activity performed by their users on said sites. People like ReviewTechUSA are blowing it way out of proportion.
Don't forget about ACTA.
