  • I have watched this several times. It's amazing what you have done. I only work in pastels (not oil ones) so I have tried to apply these techniques to a different medium. So far the same principles apply. Thank you for sharing you artistry with us!

  • @lilacmoonZ8 Yes, my approaches and techniques will adapt to most any medium. I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson!

  • Can you do these with oil pastels?

  • @MegaPancake100 Yes.

  • Hi Wilson, I think that you should highlight the part of the wave that is above the crashing part. You can put a light blue/green color there. Hope u understand what I'm saying, thanks! P.S. I have been painting for four months and love your lessons!

  • this is VERY cool indeed =D

  • i like your videos very much, they are really helpful to me as i am learning oil painting, please can you upload more videos to show the still or flowing water of the river and also of the ancient buildings and palaces. If you can upload it, it will be very greatful to me. Please.....

  • Yes, and it's "mocked up".

  • Is all of this wet on wet? In other words, is the "knocked-up" o.0 painting you have underneath the wave at the beginning of the video still wet?

  • I subscribed. I hope you post more videos soon.

  • I'll keep that in mind, Gabriel. lol

  • oh ok and i highly appreciate your help and you should definitely come to Miami to become my teacher because I'm like obsessed with the wave that you did

  • More experience with this technique will make it easier to control where the spatter goes. You'll be able to pinpoint it better. One idea you can try is to lay your canvas flat and gently lay a paper towel over the sky area, before you spatter. This will keep the dots from getting where you don't want them. But, be careful laying the towel, if your painting is still wet!

  • whenever that the wave would have some foam looking like a splash, i was adding the shots of spraying dots with titanium white with my fan brush but the problem is that the white dots keep shooting a little bit at my sunset that i was doing and i was wondering if you have any ideas to help me prevent that from happening

  • I'm glad my video helped you out, Gabriel! Thanks for watching.

  • hi Wilson my name is Gabriel, i was looking at your video on how to do a wave and all because of you.. i have gained a technique with your help. so i thank you for putting that video to help me out

  • if u mix green with yellow, what u get????

  • @mariamakeupfan Depending on the ratio ( more Green/ less Yellow or less Green/ more Yellow ) you'll get a yellowish green, or a greenish yellow.

  • Thank you, very much sir

  • thank you for sharing! I really enjoy your videos!

  • hi wilson im a baby boomer that just started painting self taught so to speak last fall, i tried this sunset and when i was done i cried!! it was the first thing i did that i really felt super proud of and i have you to thank for it i love all your videos. thankyou

  • @jude3235 That's great. Painting doesn't HAVE to be hard. I'm glad you had fun with it!

  • In my classes, I usually start "newbies" out with a sunset, or a waterfall. Check out my sunset lesson here on YT and give it a try. It requires very few colors and tools and is quite easy to achieve a good result.

  • wat would u recommend the first thing a beginning painter should try to paint?

  • Great vid! You make it look so easy!

  • THIS IS BEAUTIFUL....Thanx!!!

  • Hello Mr.Wilson, have been watching ur few lessons on youtube, and they are so good awsome i have been looking for a teacher all my life and i found ur techniques so easy to do. i am gonna try this out and thanks for all the stuff u have shared. would like to buy ur books and videos too but i am from india and online i cant can u help me where i can get it in india.?

Once again a big thanks and May God bless you.

  • @itsnaj4u I'm very happy that you've enjoyed my lessons on YouTube. My book & videos are easily available at several locations on-line; My website, Jerry's Artarama website, Amazon, etc. Perhaps, you could order the book through a bookstore in India? It is available world-wide, so I'm sure you could. As for my Dvd's, I ship overseas and have sent orders to India many times before. So, if you can possibly order through my website, I will ship to you!

    Thank you & best wishes!

    Willie

  • thank you sir :) this wave technique helped me ace my Fine Arts final this morning :)

  • @nixchick20 Cool! I'm glad to have been of help!

  • thanks! :) I always had a problem with this. I'm glad you broke it down. it's a lot easier once you know its anatomy.

  • AWESOME! I love your spray. Your videos give me confidence to do bigger things in my landscapes. I like acrylics, but am slowly getting over my fear of oil. Thanks again for the beautiful video.

  • Thank you mr. Wilson

this a great lesson you help us a lot

    god bless u

  • Wow that's awesome

  • u r the best

  • Hi, I love watch your videos! they are just amazing! thanks! God bless you!

  • Hi Wilson,

It's Gregg O. from Chicagoland....I just followed the e-mail instuctions and subscribed for your videos- thanks for your help!! Your paintings rock!!

    Gregg.

  • @TheTatWizard

    Thanks for subscribing, Gregg!

  • Really appreciate this! I am definitely going to try it. THANK YOU!

  • Hi mr Wilson, do you still remember your portugues fan? hehe its me again. i´ve already finished my painting. i can show you now.

    Please post new videos.

  • @TheKsr100 Yes, I remember you. I'm planning on doing more lessons in the near future.

  • Hi Mr. Bickford. Thansk for your post. I gave oil painting a go for the first time!

I made a really good sky and water base to paint on but i found alot of problems painting over this coat without ending up in a complete mess. It looks so easy when you paint! have you got any advice you could give me, do you think my base coat may have been too thick?

    Thanks!

  • @1day1 That's a definite possibility. Too much basecoat makes it difficult to add more paint as the canvas will be too slippery. Work a small amount evenly into the canvas and make sure it is uniformly distributed. With this smaller amount, the canvas should feel slightly "tacky" when you touch it with your fingertip. Also, you won't need a huge amount of paint on the brush to put the sky & water areas in. Typically, you'll be using the most paint in the foreground. ( heavier textures )

  • Thank you. : )

  • great to see !

  • could this be done with Acrylics?

  • @ayoitzscott1 Yes. The wave structure and approach would be the same.

  • Hey, thanks. I usually draw. I create tattoo designs, etc. but, I wanted to challenge myself to painting. I have a good feel for art, and I can see depth and shadows very well. so, for someone who is starting, is this concept too hard? I remember you saying even your students have trouble. You make it seem easier than it probably is. You are great.

  • I am an art student, a beginner, This really helps me alot. yahnk for postiing this kind of lessons on You Tube..

  • these paintings are brilliant, painters like bob ross, william bill alexander and wilson bickford really amaze me

  • @tebarovski Well, thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated. Don't forget to join me on Facebook.

  • excellent :) thank you

  • no one can beat bob ross.

  • @RYANgills12

I never said I could. I've learned more from watching Bill Alexander than Ross, but I've never said I was trying to "better" either of them. I've just taken things I've learned from them and several other artists, ( Helen Van Wyk, Jerry Yarnell, Wyland, etc. ) and rolled all of it into my own style. And I've developed a few unique twists of my own in the process.

  • Please you are very good, but take care your healthy, you are out of breath, ...we need you Bro...

  • Hi I realy like your video on the wave. I tried to leave a comment on your blog but could't for some reason. Any way i liked your painting with a platter knife i will try it soon. You have been a great deal of help to me. I am teaching my self. Do you have any video's on knife painting? Thanks Again.

  • @art321ful

Thanks, I'm glad I've been of help to you. Currently, I don't have any lessons devoted strictly to "knife painting", but I'm considering it for the future.

  • Nice tutorial man, keep up the great work! You're very talented! :D

  • @delkin525

    Thanks for watching!

  • i like your work ..thanks

  • Hi Art321ful Thank you for emailig me and giveing me the tips for windows.I get the idea now makes a big diffrence to my windows. I apriciate you comeing back to me so quickley. I will keep watching your video. I keep finding new ones to watch. Thanks again Art

  • art321ful I have enjoyed your video's very much. I have been painting for a few years and taught myself . I would like to know if they is a way to make windows look like real windows. You see i am painting house's for people. They seem to like what i am doing.Well keep doing what your doing and i will keep Watching. I love it.

  • @art321ful

I find that this approach works well. - Underpaint the windows with a dark value, then add the appropriate "sky color" into it, whether it's blue sky or sunset colors. This suggests glass and reflections. Go to my website and look at the buildings on my "COMMISSIONED ARTWORK" page. You'll see how I did them.

  • Thankyou - so explanatory and informative. Can't wait to have a go.

  • i am sorry, i saw on your website the 17 new videos (:

thank you, you should've told us.

  • @emrahh13

Hey, better late than never! lol

  • why aren't you posting anymore videos ?

we are depending on you but you never upload any more videos.

  • @emrahh13

I'm just very busy with my class/ workshop schedule. I'm also working to produce my own signature line of paints, brushes, palette, etc.

In addition to the 8 clips I've produced and posted here, have you seen the 17 more of my lessons that Jerry's Aratama has posted? "Search" my name on YT to bring them ALL up.

  • @wilsonbickford i only just started watchng your videos...i am trying to learn how to oil paint...wat do u use to clean ur brushes??....i have heard that people use turpentine????

  • @mrchemicalromance

Turpentine isn't nearly as popular as it once was for cleaning brushes, though there are still some who use it today. Most artists nowdays, myself included, use mineral spirits ( aka "Paint Thinner" ) Try to get the " 100% Odorless " variety.

  • thanks for the reply :) i appreciate it. love your work. keep it up

  • hey, how do you clean your pallet so well. after im through painting, my pallet always seems to be stained. any suggestions?

  • @Benbow530

Well, part of it depends on what type of plastic it's made from. Some palettes tend to stain and some don't. I just scrape off the excess paint with my palette knife and wipe it down with thinner on a paper towel.

  • Saw a lot of videos but this is the one that explains better how to paint a wave, thanks a lot!!!!

  • Thanks. There's lots more info on my website. Check it out!

  • BEST teaching video I've seen...paid for some that were not nearly as good...THANKS for taking time to share your knowledge and skill!

  • You're welcome. Thanks for the high praise. Please take time to check out my website.

  • Cool !!

  • Great painting, such an action piece. I've done a few beach paintings myself. Fee free to check out my how to paint videos and subscribe if you like. Keep up the great work! Robert

  • wow i am well delighted with your video, i have never done an oil painting before and i will most certanly use your tips for my first one....... loved every video thanks very much for sharing :-)

  • looking forward for more techniques... =)

    great job!!!

  • nice. TY for the tips. when you know what you are doing it looks easy and works fast : ) and Ps. alltough im not new at all to painting but i havent used the basecoat thing EVER so is it the same thing as using linseed oil or whatever but on a larger scale ? cos i only use oil for particular layers, colors and spots, but never for the whole canvas.

  • The basecoat allows me to work "wet-in-wet", thus making blending easier. This is not the only painting approach I use, though. Sometimes, I use a more traditional style utilizing underpainting and glazing.

  • I know this may sound dumb, but I'm new to oil painting. Actually, I've never used oil pants before. So I have no clue what some of this stuff is. For instance, what is this "medium" thing you talk about in all your videos. And do you have to put a base coat always? What does it do? If you could help me it would be much appreciated.

  • The medium I'm referring to is a baecoat ( sometimes clear, sometimes white ) which I apply to the canvas at the start of a painting. It wets the canvas down and allows the next layers of paint to glide on more easily and allows for any blending and softening which needs to be done.

  • So, is there a certain thing to use as a basecoat?

  • I use Alexander Magic White. Bob Ross Liquid White is also available at most art supply stores.

  • this is really greate wilson ,you're my best .i wish that you make a copie of your books on the web for the free download to help me more .....thank you

  • Your paintings your beautiful!

  • Thank you!

  • This is fantastic! I might try some of these out at school :D

  • I'm new at painting, and I have a question. The structure of what I am doing comes out good, but I am having a hard time getting white to show up, and not mix with the back. Is there some way to help fix that? Thanks! Your awesome painter!!!

  • This is one of the disadvantages of working wet-in-wet. However, there are a couple of things you can do to minimize it.

Don't use a thick layer of paint in the background. That only makes it harder to lay paint on top without picking it up. Also, thin your highlight colors down a little bit with a few drops of paint thinner or medium. This make make it "stick" to the paint underneath without pulling it up and mixing in as much. Also, use lighter brush pressure on the topmost layers.

  • this is great, thank you very much for all the lessons. and i will keep trying this over and over. my first wave was not that great, but with practice one can be great. thank you again.

  • wow thanks!

  • You're welcome!

  • Wilson you're awesome! Marry Me!

  • " I do " !

  • Thanks for sharing your demonstration, this is very helpful for whoever wants to improve their techniques or even a beginner.

  • Well, I've tried to focus on some of the "trouble spots" my students seem to always have problems with. Hopefully, many people will find my lessons somewhat "enlightening". Thanks for watching and please remember to check out my website.

  • "you can do this" what a great teacher!! I've loved and learned so much from the videos I've watched. Thanks!!!!

  • Thank YOU for watching. Don't forget to check out my website and blog.

I just posted a step-by-step project on my blog complete with photos!

  • Thanks to us?! Thanks to you, good sir, for teaching these technique. I hate it when an artist will not give the basic lesson and instead, give them ONLY step-by-step instructions for a copy painting. :(

  • Great lesson :) I've always had problems with water features. Thank you very much! Your book is really nice too.

  • Thanks for getting my book! I'm glad to have been of help.

  • You are so nice to share all this great videos , you are a excelent teacher thank you so much !

  • You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

  • Thanks a lot!

    i painted a great one because of u !

  • That's cool! I'm glad I could be of help! Thanks for watching.

  • A very nice tutorial, thank you.

  • You're welcome.

  • Thousand thanks for you.

  • Thank YOU for watching!

  • Hello!

I have painted some pictures after your lessons. You can see my oilpaintings .Thank you very much!

  • Wow! Thank you so much for this video! I really like how you talked about the waves anatomy that really helped me visualize what wave I want in my head. 5 stars!

  • You're welcome. You can learn to paint anything if you understand it's form and make-up.

  • is that cool or what? haha great so clear : )!

You always remind me of tony soprano don't know why

  • I love this! Very informative and clear.

  • "Anyone" can learn to paint if they understand their subject!

  • now i can do wave.. thx alot

  • I want to paint with oil, but i don't know how to thin the paint.Wich one is better and why Terebentine essence or Linnen oil

  • I don't use either of those. Primarily, I use 100% Mineral Spirits ( paint thinner ) and sometimes LIQUIN ( made by Winsor/Newton ) It's an alkyd-based medium which is compatible with oils. It will also speed up the drying time of the oils, so that's why I prefer it.

  • Fortunately for me time is not a problem , but i've heard that if you exceed with terebentine it destroys the canvas, and i surely don't want that.

  • Sir thanks a lot !

  • Thank you!!! I am attempting my first ocean scene and this has helped me out a lot.

  • Glad I could be of assistance!

  • i am also an artist i usually do potraits and skecthing but want to do love to do oil paints these lessons really helps

  • Glad to hear it!

  • You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • haha..its me again mr. wilson... i'll try again this wave..i always get teribble time doing it...but i'll try your methods... it is very helpful... im just a begginer also..trying to develop my potential in painting and making sketches.. =)

  • Hang with it! Improvement will come with practice.

  • thank you mr. wilson!!! your paintings are very helpful....it is very nice of you that you share your uniqe talents for us... i really thank you.... =) godbless and more power!!!!!!!! =)

  • You're welcome. Thank you for your interest.

  • thanks for commenting back mr.wilson.. can i use any brush in here??rather than fan brush??

  • Yes, other brushes will do the job. But, I think the Fan brush works best for it.

  • yes..i noticed it... haha..i think fan brush will do well... thanks again mr. wilson..keep on posting some more videos.. =) god bless!! take care!!

  • the last part was awesome

  • Thanks! Give it a try!

  • thank you! eyem a beginner painter and have been looking for something like this! thanx!

  • Okay, I'm excited to finally understand the elements of a wave and I will try it and tell you how it goes. Thanks so much for saying things I've never heard in painting a wave. Mine never come out right. (Well I've only been painting for about 2 wks now). :)

  • Breaking it down like this will surely help.

  • brilliant!

  • Thank you.

  • hi Mr. Bickford! i just wanted to know where you get your canvas and art supplies..because i have tried local store and i guess none of those are as good as i thought it should be.. please reply..sorry to bother you : ) - rose

  • Hi Rose,

I purchase my supplies from a number of on-line sites, but mostly these two; dickblick d o t com and jerrysartarama d o t com

  • At 2:49 of the video, I recite all the colors as they appear on my palette. Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black, Sap Green, Cadmium Yellow Pale and Titanium White.

  • MR Wilson!!! remember your Portuguese fan? i hope so :) i almost finished my painting! And i really hope you like it, beacause i promessed that i will sent it to you. Once again, great job and nice tutorial professor, you helped me a lot!

  • Yes, I remember you and I'd love to see your finished painting. Send me a photo via e:mail through my website.

  • if you don't mind:

How do you get those small light particles in the sea surface?i.e: pause at 2:48

I'd hate to think that's just the room lighting doing that.

  • Sorry, but yes, that's room lighting. However , you can achieve a very similar effect by letting the background dry and dragging the flat backside of a brush loaded with a little Titanium White across the water surface. The idea is to let the paint "deposit" itself on the "tooth" ( high spots ) of the canvas.

  • Sorry to bother you again,I know you're a busy man. I tried placing the brush in the sea surface then dragging it slightly but the result I got is that of sea surface foam. Am I doing this wrong(probably) or do I need to give the "spray" effect by pulling the fan brush with a finger and then letting it go?

  • Hey hi this is a really great tutorial, can i ask whats the music called in the beggining Thank you.

  • That piece of music is titled, "Captiva" and was written by Cindy B., who works for Obsidian Custom Video.

  • O thanks i just checked her channel right now and ,i mean y didnt i think o that. any way thanks

  • I thought that music was perfect for my video soundtrack, so she graciously let me use it. It's also on my full-length Dvd's.

  • Thank you very much..no one has ever explained this to me in such a simple way

  • Glad I could shed some light on it for you.

Please visit my website and blog, too!

  • I recently begain painting and found your lessons and teaching style to be excellent. I therefore bought your book from Amazon. My only disappoint is that you do not specify the colour mixtures for the different projects. Pictures are shown of the colour mixtures but I do not know for example which red should be used Crimson red, or alizarin.

Can oil paints be used instead of acrylic to do the projects in your book.

I look forward to additional lessons posted on you tube.

  • Hi,

Thank you for purchasing my book. I hope you enjoy painting those projects. If you refer to page 11, you'll see the specific colors that I used for the whole book. Namely, ULTRAMARINE BLUE, CADMIUM RED , CADMIUM YELLOW PALE, BURNT SIENNA and TITANIUM WHITE. And yes, you can use Oils for these projects utilizing the same 5 colors.

  • you are just amazing... ... I'm soooo getting your book!

  • Thank you. I'm sure you'll enjoy my book as it has a lot of tips regarding different types of backgrounds and animals.

  • thank u very mach ur lessons r grat and helpful we need more ^_^

  • Seriously I'll post one of your video on my facebook profile.this is totally great for beginers...unlike other youtube painting lessons ur's are more unique...they are specially good for beginers.I'm a computer science student and still ur videos are making me an inspiration. Its 1am here but cant leave ur videos and go to bed....It lols

  • Yes, feel free to post it on Facebook. My profession is being an artist and instructor, so I get A LOT of beginners in my classes. So, I've found that it's easier to get my points across if I keep things simple. It seems to work well that way.

  • wilson you have done great job here...but I too watchd jerrysartarama for your videos ... It will be great if you can do it on youtube too thank you again

  • I'm sure I'll have more posts on YouTube in the future. Thanks for watching!

  • Wilson, you sound like you are out of breath. Good paintings!

  • I think it's just that because I was wearing a tight collared shirt, the lapel mic I was wearing was practically rubbing on my throat, so it picked up every little nuance.

  • u r iartist also and a greatist person,,bc some artist didnt replay..absloutely awesome ,,all the best..take care

  • Just remember that painting is all about practice and if you keep at it, your work will improve. Have fun with it!
