context is everything. Messi scored a fantastic goal against an average team in a run of the mill league game. Giggs scored a winner in an FA cup semi final in a match between undoubtedly the two best teams in the country at the time. The goal came in extra time, against one of the best ever premier league defenses with united down to 10 men.
The more i see this goal, the more i admire it. When Giggs was twisting the Arsenal defenders with his swerves and balance, Adams stayed inside to block route to goal, and so when Giggs surged between Keown and Dixon, he still needed a brilliant shot v a top goalie. This is better than Maradona's goal v England. It came right at the end of a tremendous match, with Utd down to 10 men, and set up the treble. Giggs is a better role model than Maradona, selfless, dedicated, still going strong at 37
not only that it was a sansational run, you have to calculate that the pitch in that time was very muddy and hunched, so the control was amazing from the player SIR ryan giggs
That's a...rather weary one from Viera. Giggs, gets past Viera, past Dixon who..come back at him...it's a wonderful run from GIGGS !! Sensational goal from Ryan Giggs. In the second period of extra-time. He's cut Arsenal to ribbons...
The amazing part of this, is that that Giggs scored when United only had ten men. Arsenal had plenty of chances, a disallowed goal due to an offside and a penalty save by Schemichel.
Did messi score a goal against this good of a defense, on this big of a stage, with 10 men? I didn't think so. This goal is, if not the best goal. Giggs you will always be remembered.
zzzaoo990 and zizoumerci are two notorious jealous tits who can't stand Manchester United, the fuckers ensure that Manutd players don't get the credit they duly deserve only to get their bins handed to them,Ignore these twunts..
With greatest respect to Lionel Messi and Barca fans,Ryan giggs goal was better because we played with 10 men against one of the best defence in Europe,then..
Messi's wonder goal a few years ago was far better than Giggs' goal,a far better play as well.Messi actually dribbled around players unlike Giggs who ran with the ball at players who stood off him.
@zzzaaa0990 what a load of bollocks! Messi's goal was against fecking Getafe, this goal was against the best defence in england at that time with 10 players on the pitch. And you are saying that players stood off him, lol, just look at his movement with the ball, it is perfect example how to dribble with full pace and that last part of run when he glided past Dixon and Keown is dribbling at it's best. Fuck off for all who dont respect Ryan Giggs!
@illidanish Getafe are a fine footballing team,I think Messi's goal is much better than this goal.No Arsenal player tackled him before he got into the box.So my vote goes to Messi without hesitation.
@zzzaaa0990 U make no sense in your comment... Messi actually dribbled around players unlike giggs who ran with the ball at players who stood off him. U do realise that running with the ball towards a player is called ''DRIBBLING''u tool!! Shows how much u no about football haha
@pope14 I do make sense,Messi had a more difficult route to goal as he had players sniping at him, where as Giggs was given a lot of freedom to attack the Arsenal goal, look again you see I'm right!Teams with 10 men are usually harder to beat as they raise their game and become more defensive.
@pope14 Saying Getafe are a fine team comparable to Arsenals monster defense at the time is like calling a ford fiesta as "not bad" compared to a bugatti veyron. Oh, and if you watch the vid properly you'll see the defenders never even had a chance to snipe or tackle. The run and dribble was immaculate as he turned them inside out. Giggsy's goal over Messi's any day of the week.
@twismify well said - and also - this was done in unreal circumstances. anybody who watched this game will know. United down to ten men against their biggest rivals at the time and in extra time. Unreal.
So sad to think that nowadays he would get a yellow card for depriving the shirt sponsors of their camera time... just about sums up football right now :(
@burnleyboy01 IT WAS A GOOD COME BACK FROM THE SCUM BUT IN THAT GAME THEY DIDNT HAVE THERE CAPTAIN SENT OFF OR WAS THERE A LAST MIN PEN FOR ARSENAL OR HAVE A PLAYER RUN ROUND THE BEST DEFENCE IN THE LEAGUE. WHAT A GOAL AND WHAT A GAME. U JUST CANT BEAT NIGHTS LIKE THAT. LUHG
@ThaReaper01 Messi might not even be playing at 35 or 36... who knows. But he's already the best in the world at 23, and neither Scholes or Giggs could make such a claim at any stage in their career.
@ThaReaper01 Yep, I've seen him play. I think he's a fantastic talent, and I admire him hugely. But I just think that Messi is on a level of his own, some of the things he does are breathtaking.
allways remember that goal. what makes it even more great. is he had playe da full game and into extra time. and still had the hunger to run all that way when tired
@69salford69 I see where you are coming from but trust me, Scholes and Giggs are up there with Ronaldo and Messi, they just don't get the same recognition because they are not South American. Both have been phenomenal players for 15+ years, which is more than can be said for Ronaldinho. Zidane said Scholes is the greatest player of his generation, and he knows a thing or two about greatness.
@mitoy11 "Trust me, Scholes and Giggs are up there with Ronaldo and Messi" ... Trust you?! With a comment like that, I'd look out the window if you told me it was raining! Messi is on a different level altogether from Scholes & Giggs - and from Ronaldo too, for that matter. Not really getting your comment re the lack of recognition because they're 'not South American' either - EPL players (especially English ones) are contstantly hyped and ridiculously overrated by Sky Sports and the like.
i'm a man utd fan, gotta love that goal. as well as ryan giggs. his day of retiring is coming one of these days, and when he does decide to hang up his boots, defenders from other clubs will be able to breathe a sigh of relief. lol

First off, I have never like Manchester Utd. However, I have always had respect for Giggs. Not the arrogant type that's all too common. I was rooting for Belgium in the 1994 World Cup qualifier, live at Cardiff, March '93. Belgium had won all 7 of their qualifiers up to that point. Free kick. We're sitting right across from it. Giggs lines up. I tell my friend, "this is going in". And I'm supporting Belgium! Whoosh! In it goes. Giggs, class act, helluva player. One of the best ever!

Conceding a goal, to make it 1-1.
A goal by Anelka, disallowed.
On the backfoot for five whole minutes.
Giggs with tired legs, been runnin for 110 mins.
Receives the ball from Viera, and beats SEVEN players, to smash the ball into the roof of the net.
Brilliant.
No matter how much you praise messi, or ronaldo, rooney or whoever, conjuring such sorcery in such circumstances is rare.

I have yet to see a player like Giggs. He is a true Legend. Funniest comment i heard about this game was " What an assist by Viera!!"
