IT is only a farce if it is believed in literally. What all the posters here do not seem to be aware of are the stages of faith/spiritual growth. A fundamentalist is at the literal-mythic level. This means that they interpret mythology literally. They have no knowledge of symbols or archetypes. At another level...the Jesus story can be interpreted as symbolic of the death and rebirth process that all humans go through to attain a higher level of consciousness.

that seems totally logical that he never existed. the greatest lies are built upon truths, and the bible played upon that exactly. many of the historical artifacts and locations mentioned have been found. so, in short, they built the trust of the readers by telling them truths that could be tested and then hit them with the greatest lie that could in no way be proven true or false. you kind of have to appreciate whoever came up with such a scheme...

kippmcleod, Paul didn't create Christianity, it always existed since Eden and went by another name,Isaiah said He would be rejected by his own. Paul and the other disciples had to answer to James the brother of Jesus who was the biship of Jerusalem, read your Bible and get your facts.

Questions for the skeptic: Why would Jews start a faith based upon the premise that a Jew rejected by the Jewish leaders and crucified by the Romans was the Messiah? Why after this message of "Jesus the rejected, crucified Jew is the Messiah because he rose from the dead" was presented did anyone believe it? Especially since this message was first presented in Jerusalem, the place of Jesus' execution and burial and the place where it would be the easiest to provide proof that this crucified Jew was still dead and buried?

Look at the whole picture, not the apparent idea. This is a weak ground to stand on because the earliest and best accounts of history are based on the Bible, which has proved to show geographical and kingdoms as well as Empires etc... Mythology is out of touch with these historical facts.

Asked and answered, Paul created Christianity. There's no reason it couldn't be Jesus, and if there were supporting documents I might be able to believe that, but there's no reason it HAS to be Jesus. Like any other religion that was started, the main character of this religion could easily have been made up.

You're seriously comparing the existance of Troy, which has mountains of archeological evidence behind it outside of Odyssey and the Iliad with the story of Jesus of the bible? Also, no one challenges it as false because of its mythical elements... IT'S BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY UNDERSTOOD AS MYTHICAL! The bible is challenged because it is said to be the true word of God, not partially true. No double standard is being applied here.

Yes, the bible, which took hundreds of years to put together and was started not by the main character, Jesus (lots of fictitious characters appear in such books by the way) but by a man named Paul, writing open letters of his discontent. Any book as old and as rewritten and retranslated as the bible demands second or third confirmation to be taken seriously, and there simply is none for the bible.

We could say that if it were the case, but there is documentation of World War II, as well as eyewitnesses, artifacts that can be traced back to people involved, geographical references, multiple accounts... I'd love to see any of that evidence to prove Jesus' existence, even a tenth of it, but it doesn't exist, and this is from one of the most well-documented periods of history.

If written history isn't witnessed by at least one of the authors, then yes, I discount it. The fact that Josephus lived over sixty years after the time of Christ, and therefore could not have met him personally means he could have gotten the story from the texts that make up the bible, just as we did. This is why I discount him, not because he was a Jew who spoke kindly of Jesus.

If jesus existed, shouldn't there be some sort of history elsewhere (outside of the bible)alluding to his existence? Written by someone who was alive at the time (NOT Josephus) Especially since he lived (allegedly) during perhaps the most well documented era in history.
