It is worth remembering that the LRDG included detachments from the Commmonwealth forces. My father was a signaller with the ILRS (the Indian Long Range Squadron) which was one unit of the LRDG. These troops ventured far behind German lines, in reconnaissance, in fast artillery raids and generally interrupting the German war effort in the desert. Their camaraderie was intense, with the usual distinctions of rank, and formality much reduced. Everyone faced the extremities of life in the desert.
