My tour onboard PROTEUS was the absolute worst assignment I had in the 21 years I served in the Navy. The combination of a surface ship and submarine CO and XO was just horrible. The only good that came out of that assignment (1985 - 1988) was that we got to spend a lot of time in Hong Kong. I hated that ship and probably a third of the crew. And when the loons from COMSUBGRU SEVEN were onboard, it got even worse.
I was stationed on the Proteus in 1975 -76, we actually took too sea to avoid a typhoon. I was in the repair division and had some good times with the guys in my division, one night in particular climbing a water tower.
Thanks, I was stationed on the ole girl on from the spring of 74 to the fall of 75. I was an MR. First I did my messdeck duty in the S2 Dept. Next I was transfered to the Lock and Engraving Shop. Then finally I when to the Fleet Machine Shop in the R2 Div. Chief Strom put me in the Tool Crib to organize it before I got to machine anything. I used to love to sail the sunfish over at the yacht club and the steak cookouts. I did a lot of Booney Stomping to all the old WWII places both US and Jap.
hi do u know Anthony Castro in USS Proteus from 1989 till 1992? Hes a full blood Filipino but an american citizen and served on that ship that year too.
Hi, thank you for sharing. This ship holds fond memories for me as she was the first US sub tender to come here to Scotland in the 60,s. My brother in law served aboard as a TM3.
Hi Thanks for the comments, The Uss Proteus had a lot of great history. I myself made TM1 on the old pro. Also had orders to Holyloch in the mid-80's but the got canceled for medical resons, I'm sure I missed a great tour over there.
