in the situation at 9:00, you could divide your army in two groups, one just cavalry, the other with the infantry. the cavalry will reach and occupy the city, the infantry will be one step away, so that, if the cavalry group gets attacked, the infantry will join as reinforcement and can take part in the battle :)
