Still a great song! So many old songs don't measure up when you haven't heard them for a long time, but this one is every bit as good as I remember. I'm just thrilled to death to be able to hear it again; a real classic for us CT folk. We used to play a lot of pool at the Windsor pool hall around '69-'70, and Big Al and his buddies were there a lot. That was way cool for a bunch of 15 or 16 year olds, and I've been a fan since.
I'm a guitarist and the guy is definitely playing more than 3 chords ...and well. This is the second song I looked for when I started file sharing and was ecstatic when I found it. The first was "I Need Your Lovin' " by Don Gardener The Beatles and Stones emulated a lot more blues and R & B than Chuck Berry. A ridiculous statement."Cry" is a great vocal but "I'm Down" and "She's a Woman" still gives me the chills. The Stones used the Chess catalog heavily to fill out their early albums.
I think this song is one of the best songs ever written and recorded. Al Anderson does great vocals on this recording. I saw this band back in 1967 when they played at the Shack in Watertown, CT and this song at the time was at the very top of the charts in CT. This is one of my all time favorite songs. To this day I'll never understand why this song did not make the national charts and recognized on a national level.
I had to laugh when I read the comment about the guitarist only knowing three chords. The guitarist is Al Andersonwho was with NRBQ and released about 20 plus LPs with them, went to Nashville and became a successful songwriter and played guitar with Vince Gill who is also an exceptional guitarist. Not sure how anyone listens to a song and makes a comment about how many chords a guitarist knows when all he's doing is playing the song but then again, that's why some think Sarah Palin is smart.
I WANT to like this but . . . . their guitarist only knows 3 chords! But the harmonies are good on those 3. I was 11 back then. This is where I would head back to my mom's Herb Alpert & Franck Pourcel collection . . . . funny how our tastes in all things vary so much. I never choose to like or dislike any song, they just either work for me, or they don't. Your hurculean efforts in posting so much great music are MUCH appreciated ! ! ! Chuck

@gilharper This song took off in Detroit. The label made the mistake of putting a picture sleeve of the band. Sales plummetted soon after.
