Sorry to say this BUT you're technique and your tutorial is INCORRECT! Check this video instead if you want to learn the side kick the proper way. SIDE KICK Correction Part 1 Tutorial
The point of what I’m trying to address is that the serious martial artist should not be bias against the “other ways” of doing a kick, simply because stance, circumstance, and situation, sometimes determines what kick is more suited in that environment.
The many ways of doing the side kick vary according to situation and instincts. Many professional martial artists can read their opponents moves, so they know what type of kick to use, without putting much thought into it.
”. If I am sending out a side kick from a 45 degree angle [half-moon] stance, then, yes, I will put less hip into it, because if I did, it would require me rotating a lot more, making the kick more noticeable to the opponent.
But, even so, I will put more hip-emphasis in my side kick if I am cross-stepping or burn-stepping; because naturally, I want to drive my foot through my opponent with this much momentum aiding me from the “step”.
Lowering your weight down with the body basically gives you a glorified back kick, except it’s considered a side kick because it comes out from a side-angle, and the body is not necessarily facing opposite to the leg…
Lowering the body so that you are off center of gravity may give you a higher kick with a lot more hip-force behind it, but it doesn’t give you the “technique” of the side kick… if you know what I mean.
Learning the less hip emphasis with the side kick is beneficial, because it looks more “artistic” when you have your body up, so that it’s not off center of gravity. In martial arts magazines, this is the “typical” side kick that attracts people’s eyes.
Lee’s side kick was for overkilling his opponent, and because he was just as fast as he was powerful, this kick was obvious his best choice of favour.
. In Karate… well, most of the styles I’ve played around with, “technique” was more important to the Sensei than the raw power or force that can be used with the hip. Technique, such a stance, form, posture, and leg strength (one’s ability to hold the side kick up above 90 degrees).
Bruce Lee’s argument in The Way of the Dragon when he was explaining the difference between Karate and Chinese Boxing was that the more “hip” that’s involved in the side kick, the stronger it will be.
The less hip-emphasized side kick usually is done by hitting the target with the “blade” or “edge” of the foot. A swift kick to the neck, or even as low as the knee cap, can deal a lot of damage with this “side BLADE kick”.
Even so, a quick side kick with less emphasis on the rotation of the hip, will be useful in many circumstances, as it can be performed very easily from a “frontal stance” unlike the cross-stepping side kick, which requires a side stance – sometimes a “dead giveaway”.
For the cross-stepping side kick, whether it be a cross “step” or a burning step, usually a lot of “hip” is necessary in the “power” of this kick, as it is meant to be a kick that runs through you like a train.
Many people have their own side kick… but there are more than just “one”. For instance, some will put less emphasis on “hip rotation” when executing the side kick. Others will put a lot of “hip into it”.
Various stretch exercises are important to develop the flexibility and leg strength to perform the side kick at a higher level than 90 degrees. Kicking above shoulder level for instance requires that you commit yourself to at least 3 days of stretching a week.
The side kick is one of the most traditional kicks in the world of martial arts. It is a very fast, strong, and practical kick. Any serious martial artist should know how to execute a side kick properly, and should have a general understanding of all the different ways to do a side kick.
wow... many wrong things... plis dont "combine" martial arts and fitness, if thats was posible... if u do martial arts do martial arts for martial arts, and same for fitness
No that isn't a side kick, and you are still over rotating when you extend. Strength in the kick comes from the hips and ab muscles, not from your legs. Good exercises I must admit done slowly, but it IS NOT martial art training. If these exercises were done as a martial art exercise you would cause Hips Flexing injuries. PLEASE change your You tube title...This is NOT martial arts...
Your kick looks more like a backwards roundhouse due to the way you over rotate the hip. Consider this, drop the weight. Its good when you have technique down. Work on flexibility so you don't have to over rotate and then when performing the kick, blade your foot so it has a harder surface
I do Tae Kwon Do and karate, and both have taught me to turn my leg like that when I kick, so I don't really think that there's something wrong with how she's teaching it.
@chooseit2 Her left leg is her support leg, correct? Are you saying that your support leg should not rotate when you kick? I'm not saying that what she's showing is a good kick, merely that I was under the impression that your support leg must rotate when doing a side thrust kick.
@AblativeOfMeans i probably didnt explain it properly, you do rotate your leg but not as much as she is doing it, she is over rotating her leg and her hip which is probably why she need the table(and/or the lack of muscle which could mean that she has not done many side kicks)
i really like dhis video of urs. becaures it is all about; 'Training & Fitness: which is in mma where all Street-Fighters like U!, if you are not a true fighter than.. it's ok with that, besides if u are a athers-Type-person who have alot of energy :) also [Papaiosif]... do u really think that she's is a type of girls you like? just to be hontes with u so i'm going to give it a 4-POINTS!! :D
Excellent! Just by watching that, all of the sudden I was reminded of my old karate days and what it was like to REALLY deliver Impact and Drive into an opponent--and watch the surprise on their face as they fell backward. Thanks Stacey :)
few mistakes dont hold on to anything because u need to learn to hold your balance, second dont put on weights around your feet because its not naturale better do it more times the natural way then to do it with weights and thirdly your upper body should be vertical to the floor when u raise your knees and when u kick u can only then bend your body like she does it to get more power and distance and dont kick with your foot kick whit your heel it will look like an adge of a sword
Another way for beginners is just standing legs together, feet pointed outwards(called heisoku-dachi in karate). Extend your fists out toward the ground for balance. Lift your knee up(chamber), extend the leg to the side, bring back to chamber, put it down. Rinse and repeat. Karateka have been doing it that way for centuries.
Why don't you learn them how to stamp the floor, before lifting anything! Can't even kick straight and when do you think of training balance if you hold onto something!!!
Yes, fine for exercise but she shouldn't be claiming her poor technique, power lacking, telegraphing so-so side kick is the right way to do it to new comers wanting to learn martial arts. She should be flagged and flogged!
I like it, iv been in Tae Kwan Do for 12 years im not saying the kick it right and im not saying its wrong and im certainly not bragging but for exercise wat she is doing works great.
...and dont be disrespectful, shes probably better than any of us (^_^)
It is after all, "Martial Arts for fitness", so if fitness is all you're after, this might get you somewhere, but an actual "Martial Arts Master" as this hottie purports to be, could easily teach a proper kick, with good mechanics, in a fitness context. A "Master" knows the difference between a side kick and a back kick(minor body positioning)and could most likely perform without using a balancing aid, and would definately use proper foot positioning in both the weapon and base foot. She's hot.
dos this bitch even do martial arts cus they say martial arts dont hold on to things wile kicking cuz u get used to and cant kick with out holding on to sumthing lol bitch
how true my friend.. she has no power from the hips because they are already turned over befor she kicks..the hip twist should come just befor hitting the target to allow for maximum power at the point of impact.. if she was kicking a 200 pound muscle man she would just fall over..
awful, just awful lol id like to see you do the isometric demonstration without holding on to something, when u can do that properly then post a video.
notice how your body turns away from your kick-- thats because you over rotate when u bring your leg up so then you have to fight to line it up again with your hips (which create a round house kick effect at the end of your kick) Work on your chamber
That's a good comment. There is indeed a strange round house kick effect in the kick, which actually eats away the pushing power that the side kick should have.
Aye, I used to get the same effect a long time ago. My new technique goes into a coil, while I shift my body and push outwards. Though this video could be an excellent exercise for perfecting the kick.
Ive been training Karate all my life and Ive never been this turned on... You are the hottest teacher ever! Your body is amazing! God I need some ice...

SpifoHayer 3 years ago
1) Beginners should be told to maintain balance by bracing against a solid surface.
2) To many mechanical motions in your initial chamber position.
3) If you are going to point your toe in a SIDE KICK, call it ballet.
4) Way to much body movement. Isolate the legs in steps that show less mechanical confusion.
I know what you are trying to show here but, your demonstration is poor.
