He works as a blood expert, but on his time off he's a serial killer who follows a certain code "kill only those who deserve it".

The amazing thing about the show is how they show life from a psychopath's eyes. He has no emotions so he sees life differently.

To elaborate on the last response his code has 2 main rules. His victims must be killers themselves, and of course don't get caught. Plus, isn't a forensics expert the perfect cover for a killer, access to criminal databases for "research", and the ability to do lab tests when it suits him. He kills mainly because it give him an adrenaline rush which is as close to having emotions as he really gets. The voiceovers explain alot about Dexter as a character.
