Sorry Bill, I have to side with your wife on this one. You should have at least let her know before-hand. It's not like you were just out photographing wild life, you were around gorgeous, naked women, most of whom probably wanted you. You did nothing wrong on your guest 'Playboy' photo shoot. Taking pictures of the human form is no different than Michelangelo's nudes, the depiction of 'Venus' using oil paints on canvas, etc. The human body, in one's opinion, is a wondrous work of art; and for thousands of years artisans have taken pictures of it... mental pictures, painted pictures, sculpted pictures, and (as of recent in the last 150 years) 'still' camera pictures.
Shatner is interviewed in the new documentary Transcendent Man, his interview is even quoted in the trailer. The trailer is on youtube, just type in "transcendent man trailer". Great man, great mind.
I still think that perhaps she would have been more ok with it if she knew about it before the photos came out. After all it's always been my dream to kiss Mr. Spock and married or not if i had the chance i would, lol and he's not even a "real" person, just a character. Here's a classic example of how the Shat's life is much different from the common man. As he points out, it is a dreamer's dream to be given an opportunity to have these experiences, but whereas the "normal" husband, father, etc. would realize the consequences of acting out these fantasies- he indulges and is completely oblivious to why his indulgence is frowned upon by others, even those closest to him. "What's the problem here?" he asks his wife. No wonder he's hated & loved simultaneously.

As outsiders, we can only speculate as to why or why not Shatner would talk about this or that, etc., to his wife. It's not really for us to know. The bigger point is, here he is taking his lumps for it in a very public fashion. Even if it's done in a humorous fashion one cannot discount the validity of the gesture.
If the spouse of someone in the performing arts has hangups about any aspects of it, then no amount of "permission" is going to make any difference to their comfort level.

I'm married 29 years to the same woman and its great. My advice, always discuss with the wife first. If she's too uncomfortable with a project that's HER issue and she will have to deal with her feelings with it. This way she doesn't feel like you've betrayed a trust by not telling her ahead of time. She can ask you not to do it, but not demand it. In the end the final decision is yours to make. You're the best.

Why did Playboy have Shat as a guest photographer? Who 'reading' Playboy was going to know or care about who took the pictures? From what I;ve seen the pictures are airbrushed to the point where the subjects are unrecognisable as real women. That girl was someones daughter. Your lovely wife was upset because you hid the activity from her (she probably wonders what else you may be hiding, or have hidden in the past that will come out eventually). If she wasn't upset (punishing you), you might think "That wasn't so bad" and do it again! Being upset is a tool.
Even after just two years of marriage, I find myself concealing little things just to avoid the tiresome bickerring that arises when you say something like; 'Hey honey, I feel like getting high' or 'Hey honey, I feel like taking some photos of naked girls'. It always seems to backfire though, because it all comes out of the woodwork eventually. It's silly stuff, but most men never seem to learn their lesson.

I think it really depends on how good the pictures were. Perhaps your wife was annoyed because the pictures you took for playboy were better than any you have taken of her? Well - the problem is not that you took those pictures but you not telling her. Because of the fact that she had to figure it out on herself it seems as if you were not sure whether it was right or wrong.
I'm a photographer myself and as long as the pictures are just about aesthetics and beauty everything is totaly fine (though I'm afraid some photographers are just taking those pictures for the sake of taking pictures of naked women).

Here's a classic example of how the Shat's life is much different from the common man. As he points out, it is a dreamer's dream to be given an opportunity to have these experiences, but whereas the "normal" husband, father, etc. would realize the consequences of acting out these fantasies- he indulges and is completely oblivious to why his indulgence is frowned upon by others, even those closest to him. Perhaps if you had discussed it with her ahead of time that you were planning on doing that, it may have not been such a shock to her, to sort of find out last, maybe she would have even encouraged it, after all if living out a fantasy makes you happy then by all means do it. As outsiders, we can only speculate as to why or why not Shatner would talk about this or that, etc., to his wife. It's not really for us to know. The bigger point is, here he is taking his lumps for it in a very public fashion. Even if it's done in a humorous fashion one cannot discount the validity of the gesture.
If the spouse of someone in the performing arts has hangups about any aspects of it, then no amount of "permission" is going to make any difference to their comfort level.

I'm married 29 years to the same woman and its great. My advice, always discuss with the wife first. If she's too uncomfortable with a project that's HER issue and she will have to deal with her feelings with it. This way she doesn't feel like you've betrayed a trust by not telling her ahead of time. She can ask you not to do it, but not demand it. In the end the final decision is yours to make. You're the best.

Why did Playboy have Shat as a guest photographer? Who 'reading' Playboy was going to know or care about who took the pictures? From what I;ve seen the pictures are airbrushed to the point where the subjects are unrecognisable as real women. That girl was someones daughter. What if Leonard Nimsey wanted to take pictures of Liz for the purposes of 'art'. At least Shats not pretending he did it in the name of "art". That would be illogical.Captain.

She was probably upset because you hid it from her in the first place. If you were upfront about it then there's a very good chance it wouldn't have been in issue. Should have been up front first; thats what is most likely upsetting too her. Having the opportunity to be a photographer for Playboy is an honor; your wife should be supportive and proud of her man, maybe she could pose for you and see how it really works, then her mind might be set at ease and forgive your lapse in judgment for not trusting the strength of the relationship. Even after just two years of marriage, I find myself concealing little things just to avoid the tiresome bickerring that arises when you say something like; 'Hey honey, I feel like getting high' or 'Hey honey, I feel like taking some photos of naked girls'. It always seems to backfire though, because it all comes out of the woodwork eventually. It's silly stuff, but most men never seem to learn their lesson.

Your wife probably felt excluded from your life, it probably hurt her more from you not telling her, than actually taking the photos, which was harmless. I've never been married, though, I couldn't stand having someone tell me what I can and can not do. A grown man needing permission to do things he wants to do? I think it really depends on how good the pictures were. Perhaps your wife was annoyed because the pictures you took for playboy were better than any you have taken of her? Maybe a private photoshoot with her is the only way to sort it out! Although using that line on her might get you into deeper trouble!

Well - the problem is not that you took those pictures but you not telling her. Because of the fact that she had to figure it out on herself it seems as if you were not sure whether it was right or wrong.
I'm a photographer myself and as long as the pictures are just about aesthetics and beauty everything is totaly fine (though I'm afraid some photographers are just taking those pictures for the sake of taking pictures of naked women).
