Did you know that the Leaves released three different "Hey Joe" versions (two different recordings appeared on Mira 207 and the hit was Mira 222). All are killer.
Hey out there, Was this by any chance a California band? And is the Tangents with Warren Brogie as the drummer? Been hunting 'Hey Joe' by The Tangents for decades. Legend had it that they cut this track and it was a local sensation but was soon swamped by The Leaves version..(which is excellent BTW). Warren became a noted dragster tech and inventor (Pomona, Calif. natch) before passing away. We were at Emerson Jr. High at the same time (1963). God Keep Him.
will do, i have loads of version, you could do a pretty decent comp. with just the covers.....gonn, standells, hazzards, soulbenders, love, golden cups, zero end, pied pipers, roks, fever tree...
Excellent! Can't wait for that. It must be one of the most covered songs in the garage era, so it deserves a tribute of some kind... and you're the man to do it! For my money, the versions by Love, soulbenders, the leaves and (for historical reasons) the byrds on the 5th dimension album deserve a mention. Good luck with it.
avoiding the obvious ones, i'm up to 19 garage versions from the sixties - chosen few, cryan' shames, euphorias id, fever tree, golden cups, gonn, kreeg, love, shadows of knight, tangents, hazzards, leaves, music machine, pied pipers, roks, soulbenders, standells, warlocks and zero end...some folks think its a traditional song, but someone copyrighted it in early 60s, still not heard that version.
@blacflag -just noticed another couple i don't have - one by the litter, and it was the b-side to mass confusion's 45 'without you'.....there's a few foriegn language ones i dont have either.
Gem! Thanks for post ;)
