Granted, Borneobill, there is more to more to music than harmony. But let's face it---if you change the voicings, you change everything. If you were to listen to first Keith Jarrett and then Herbie Hancock play "Soul Eyes" in back-to-back performances, you wouldn't notice any difference at all in their respective use of harmony and counterpoint? And harmony would not be any factor at all in how you interpreted their individual musical statements?
A fine rendition of one of the all-time great jazz ballads--I did miss the Abm7-Db7 into the Gb major7 that McCoy plays on the "Coltrane" version (ditto the E/Bb that Tyner plays at measure 6 that is so poignant as well.) Having said that, maybe it's not fair to compare--McCoy had a very personal conception of "Soul Eyes", and this pianist should be judged on his own merits.
Why would you write that? To reduce a critique of a performance down to the level of individual chord voicings is ridiculous, unless of course you are trying to impress people that you know what a slash chord is. Sorry to say this, I know you mean well, but jeez, what the fuck man!
It's not what he (Keith, Herbie) are doing but what are you feeling.
Isn't that what music is about!
