No one has written a better son than this - music and lyrics - for the 80 years since it was penned.
And Billie's version, of all the great ones, it perhaps the zenith. Who else perfected the art of Being Unhappy in an ecstatic way more thoroughly than she?
One of the best performances by Lady Day, paired with an effective and sweeping orchestral score. This ballad hits deep and haunts you well after the last note.
@BigTabby33 Ehm... BigT... writing this is one of the best performances by BH is rather rash, in my opinion...
Actually, it was recorded few months before her death, when her voice and timbre had almost completely been spoiled. This recording is well-known just because was her last but one, and has been recently reissued.
We can call it moving, intense, still strong in spite of everything, but certainly not BH at her best.
Perhaps the last great BH is on "Songs for distingué lovers" (1956).
I heard this song at a nightclub and Shazammed it, great job.
