A nice very car! Unfortunately the engine was NOT built by Ford unlike it's competitor the Dodge Spirit R/T which was faster and had a Mopar engine with only a Lotus designed head. Go Mopar!

The best memory I have of my 89 is when I kept up with a Viper on I-30 just outside of Dallas. We hit 125 mph and he chickened out, which was awesome because I was scared out of my mind as well. Lol, good times. . .
Sorry, folks, but back in the day, I had a 1986 5.0 and one of these SHO's tried to race me, and even with me shifting into 2nd early, I still pulled on him. No replacement for displacement (and a 5-speed vs. an automatic).
What most people don't know about the Ford-Yamaha relationship is that Yamaha basically took Ford's 3.0 V6 and re-engineered it to the twin-cam setup, among other and mostly minor differences.
there was nothing minor about yamahas complete re-engineering of fords 3.0L vulcan v6 infact the only thing the two engines share is the block all other components are specific to the SHO.
I had a silver 89 and i loved it... It cornered as flat as a Ferrari just like the one in the video. The downside to the 2nd gens is that Ford mismatched front and rear swaybars by throwing on whatever they had available, so you either got a great handling car or a really bad handling one. They can be made fast. aftermarket parts are expensive and hard to come by now. Big bore butterfly's and cams, and heads are very expensive. I'm not evern sure if Shoshop is still even in business or not.
I got a really clean '93 that I keep because I like the car. But if you want something more than a maginally fast street car, better pass on the SHO. There' is nothing you can do to them to make them fast without throwing a shitload of money at them.
i just find it hilarious when the guy says " it was the best american sedan to hit the street in years " i mean jeeze cars made from the mid 70s to 2000 were so boring and ugly. dont get me wrong i i think the taurus sho is an alright car even tho i hate fwd with decent power in a large car.
why dident ford just use the Sho's engine standard for every model taurus and when you get the sho package it get u a extra sporty look and better handling and a manual. but if you get a regular taurus it would have the same sporty engine but a softer ride. cus really your spending extra what 5-8k for a bigger engine thats not really that powerfull in the first place.
@BeeABaw There are so many things wrong with what you said I'l need more than one comment
1) The regular Taurus was a "bread and butter" family car for people who need to get to work and back, and could care less about performance so it would not have been cost-effective to include an expensive high-performance engine which was shipped from Japan in every Taurus. Keep in mind that the Ford Made over 350,000 Taurus' in 1989 and only about 15,000 of those were SHO models
With an SHO engine in every Taurus the base price would have skyrocketed from about $13,000 in '89 to over $20,000, and Ford would have lost money on every single one, since that was way out of the average american family's price range
2) When you say "a bigger engine thats not really that powerfull in the first place." you're not thinking about the fact that this was 1989. A Nissan 300ZX Turbo was making 205hp so 220hp in a 4door sedan was a huge deal!

The SHO model got a V8 but it was a faulty engine design and as a result the SHO model was discontinued after the 1999 model year
Impressive performance! For a high performance engine, though, I would've expected more torque than it does. I would've thought 220bhp and perhaps 300lbs-ft of torque would've sent the car flying
2:47 Unfortunately an Automatic Option will soon be available instead of doing something smart like installing an LSD. We will also ruin the Gen3 SHO by only making it with a corny automatic as opposed to making it fun with a manual.
yeah i said the same thing on another video, They still have nothing but idioits working at ford that must never use the internet to read what people want.
The 3.4 is OK. They should have welded the cams before they left Japan. Ford should have owned up to the problem since there is no maintenance scheduled for anything related to the cam on the Gen3 SHO for 1oo k.
Yeah, you're right the v8 is a maintenance nightmare. Worse yet, parts are running out. Probably for the best, it was never a good car. It has potential but you're better off modding a Maxima if you're looking low cost/reliability/potential from a sedan. No 5 speed with the Gen3 sucked.
yea i guess its ok but id rather have my contour svt over the the any of sho except for tha '10 of course lol.
i like my svt it wasnt expensive i had everything planned out b4 i bought it its decently fast stock and handles good and dont forget bout tha midnight blue leather lol
I'd rather have your SVT too. I have been looking at craigslist for a long time looking for AT LEAST a v6 Contour with a 5 speed not necessarily an SVT (because I'm a tight wad).
My exGF bought one new and I always thought they were pretty cool. SVTs are real proper!
I'm also scoping for a MX3. I have a Gen3 SHO, Gen2 SHO and a '95 Probe GT right now.
im tryna find another svt for my friend we auto-X at skool n shit n ive been searching CL for one.
id rather have mine from new but i bought it off the original owner for 3200 so not bad still over 100k miles but idc since im in the process of bulding up a 3L
and hows the gen2 sho working for u? i hate the probe bcuz everybody up here has or had a riced out one lol.
Gen1/2 SHOs are cool so long as you can find that has not been neglected. Lots of good ones are starting to become available because original and 2nd owners are moving on. I was lucky enough to buy mine with 60k on it from an rich guy. The paperwork was like an inch and a half thick, so it was well cared for. It was $2.5k. You can make a lot of good, side money replacing timing belts and checking valve clearances/replacing shims. Shops charge $1k for this service. You could make $600 each car.
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO opinions vary, does everyone need a manual? no. does everyone live their life a quarter mile at a time? no. i will take auto anytime. most people dont know how to shift right anyway
Well, as one that can drive a stick and replace the clutch if the pressure plate/friction plate if it goes bad. Give me a manual anyday! Unfortunately 98% of America doesn't know how to OWN an automatic transmission. Apparently, they think ATF is 'Jesus Juice' and never needs to be replaced.
The Gen3 SHO's auto tranny is a NOTORIOUS P.O.S. I will soon replace my current tranny in that car with a heavy duty one at the cost of $5k because of looming failure. Does that sound "good" to you? Peace
Sometimes, I get lazy and I don't want to drive my cars that have manual transmissions. Having said that, a properly driven, but neglected manual transmission will FAR outlast even an automatic transmission that has received half way decent care. That's all I care about. As we all know The SHO autobox is not a durable machine and was originally built for the punk ass Tempo. Thanks for your input.
My point for saying that is that almost every auto manufacturer eventually relents to public opinion and put a whole bunch of BS on cars for people that are "non-car people". Unfortunately, non-car people buy the overwhelming majority of new cars. Now, something like 60% of new cars are bought by women.
That should be real interesting.. I'll defer to Adam Corolla's last book on this subject because it fits right in. Peace.

My Ford Probe GT Turbo 2.2i (1995 model) is amazing. Upgraded 395 Horsepower, inline V8, gets about 20 MPG; also has a custom Magnaflow exhaust system that adds +22 HP. i love it its a navy blue colour with 20″ rims. I wouldnt trade it for a new mustang, a new camaro, or ANYTHING! u ask me to trade it for a mercedes and ill reject it.
I just got a 89 sho, in very good condition, only 130,000 miles, its so fun to drive, i beat a turbine GT with heads a k&n and exhaust, its a fast...smooth thing of a car
@F41Driver It could be done pretty easily I would think. Motor and tranny swap, a few modifications. suspension would probably bolt right up. you'd need a good set of tools though. It would be one of a kind thats for sure.
@F41Driver I have seen one done by a member of the SHO club. Its a white wagon with a everything possible transplanted from an sho...including the engine and transmission...im not totaly sure on that one though, it may be an auto. He named it thumper...you could prolly find a pic of it on tcca.com or The SHO club of america website
I've heard that 6.7 is too low of a number for these cars? I hear 6.6 alot but then i read 7.5 in motortrend i got? WTH? I like them and they are cheap so i think i may buy one BUT i need to know if those times for 0-60 are accurate?
@91Taurus That goes for Mustangs GTs and well pretty much anything. I've seen bone stock GTs kicking it pretty darn close to the 12s and bad drivers hitting 14s.
I was always told 6.6 for the 89 but different times for the 90's and up. I could be wrong but I owned a 89 and it was faster than my 93 converted 3.2 MTX. I had a blast with my 89. Was way more dependable too. Go for it.
@JoZuko The 3.2L auto had a 4-speed that did about 7.5 for the first 60 mph. I've seen from 6.4-7 seconds flat with a five-speed. Also, the 1989 SHO was the lightest of the bunch, so acceleration was probably universally most impressive for that year.
I OWN a four door 2003 Daewoo Leganza. I live in a studio apartment above a Chinese restaurant. All paid for with credit. I have an11% interest rate. I eat fast food almost every day. The only girls I get are overweight or addicted to vicodin.
Good for you, I have 2007 4 door Altima 3.5se, 6 speed manual. I wanted An Audi a4 v6, but it was out of my price range. I'm happy with my 270Hp Altima, it's fast enough for me.
I have a 2007 4 door Tauras and i dont need a newer car. I dont get why people need "fast" cars. It's not like they're going to go over 150 anyways...
The top end of my car is about 147 mph, I would never do that, but i do enjoy the acceleration very much. Amazing torque also 258 ft lbs, great power out of a 3.5. I like it because if I need the power it's there. 0-60 in 5.9 sec. love my Navigation, and use it all the time, finding places in the Montreal area. I would love to own a m6 but it's out of my league.
I dont own the M6 but my father bought it last year. About a month ago, he was going really fast and nearly hit a car so his lisence is on hold until May 2010. My mom can't stand fast cars so she drives her Volvo V70. I am allowed to drive the M6, whenever i want, but it's hard to handle. I've also gotten it keyscratched at a parking lot.
Your stories have BS plastered all over them. They have all of the regular indicators of a someone trying to sound like a big shot. I couldnt help but notice that you said "I have a 2007 4 door Tauras[sic] and i dont need a newer car. I dont get why people need "fast" cars." Yet you go on to state in a separate conversation that you have a 2009 Mustang GT.... both newer and faster. Hmm. And then you brag about how fast your dads m6 is. Hmm. One minute you are 23, the next you are 19. Hmm.
Ok I was making up the thing about my dad's M6, just so that annoying douche who said he had the Z4 would get off my back. The reason i said i have a Mustang GT is because I got a great bargain on it. My Tauras is going to get sold, and I will drive the mustang. I got the mustang for only $15,900 brand new because teh delership needed to get rid of them for their 2010 mustangs to come in. Now, keep finding more erros in what i write. I dont give a damn what u, over the internet, has to say.
I used to have a 1992 E36, BMW 325i. Great car but if something went wrong with it, it would put you in the poor house. Before the Altima I had a 2001 VR6 GTI and this car was a blast to drive. Just to small for the family and relatives.
My first car was a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM that i got in 2006. Lovely car, it just broke down in 2008 so with my saved up money, I bought a 1 year old Tauras from a dealership for $15,000
@loneknight97 Stop acting like such a ricer, sure your cars may not be "modified" like one, but I mean come on. "my dad's m6 is fasst and your car is a piece of shit"? You don't own the m6, so stop talking about how it's better than someone elses car. Also. You're 19 and still living with your parents? Living in your PARENT'S house? haha!! If you're as rich as you say you are, GO TO FUCKING COLLEGE.
i bought a 1989 tauras at a local junk lot for $300... i think im going to restore it now that i have time in the summer. it would look nice next to my 2007 tauras =P
Don't believe me. I don't care. You may have a nice car, but hey, I'm only 19. I usually drive my parent's car anyway because my dad got his lisence removed for the next year. He's got a 2009 BMW M6 that goes FASSST as hell so yeah, beat that...oh wait, u cant
How did you manage owning a 10 million dollar home at 23 congratulations. I'm 45 and my house is worth about 400 grand, and it is my fifth house in 18 years of ownership or real estate, it took me 16 years of hefty payments to become mortgage free, up to $1600 a month using variable and fixed mortgages over the years. I just want to know your secret.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
SHO guys are fcuking funny!!! Guys, its a nice car, im a FORD guy all the way and love my STANG, but to be brutally honest, its a quick sedan guys, its not a fcuking Mustang, nor is it even as fast as one. (Maybe a stock 6 cyl.) SHO guys r madd funny. c mon guys dont get carried the fcuk away, calm down. lmfao0o0o...
SHO Taurus is infamous for being a street-sleeper. Once the front tires hook up they are every bit as fast as the 5.0L LX Mustang. The automatic ones are crippled by the transaxle's parasitic power loss.
"every bit" is putting it lightly.. "spanked a 5-oh" is more like it! even better when a ricer thinks it an old rental.. still a secret and unsuspecting car to alot.
I don't know about it being a Yamaha tho that would be awesome. i hear it will be a 400hp ecoboost at least. it's really exciting, hopefully it has a 6 speed manual option.
It should have the next best thing, dual clutch 6 speed. Think of a manual trans that does the shifting for you. It is lighter than an auto, doesn't have a complex hydrolic valve system and uses a dry clutch system.
Not to complain at you man about my dislikes about the Taurus. I like the car; but they coulda used an SVO engine from the Mustang to make it more American
And the SHO is still a satisfying car to drive, even by today's standards. It's not overwhelming or rip-your-face-off fast, but it has enough hustle to stay entertaining on the right roads. If you can find a good deal for one that hasn't been shit bagged, it's worth it.
I'd say it depends on what motor you have. If you have the 3.0L Vulcan engine than be thankful cause those engines are tanks and even with almost no maintenance can go over 300,000 miles.
The Taurus engines are generally good but the auto trannys are junk
In all the newer episodes he kinda sounds like he is yelling and it sorta pisses me off. But in this episode and all the older ones he sounds like a calm and normal person, which I think is much better.
in the later shows they slam that thing around like they're trying to rip out of the floor!
probably some dumb ass suit telling Davis to yell in the later ones, either that or they won't increase his pay so he's just hell of pissed off, like the shifter guy.
"unfortunally an automatic transmision might come in two more years" ahahahah why did they even invented automatic transmisions? It kills all the fun of driving in my opinion
True, if everyone was forced to drive a stick than we wouldn't have any of those douche-bags who talk on their cell phones instead of watching the freakin road..especially when they're on the highway
I have a 97 SHO, and I am subsequently "forced" to drive an automatic. Am I less qualified to be on the road that the 17 year old playing "Need for Speed" in his '89 Crapura Integra, just because he's got a stick?
lol mazda mpv, my uncle sold that car back in 2008 and now he drive an 07 caravan

2:47 Unfortunately an Automatic Option will soon be available instead of doing something smart like installing an LSD. We will also ruin the Gen3 SHO by only making it with a corny automatic as opposed to making it fun with a manual.

dont forget about that trashy3.4 yamaha v8 engine
streetracer44870 2 years ago
The 3.4 is OK. They should have welded the cams before they left Japan. Ford should have owned up to the problem since there is no maintenance scheduled for anything related to the cam on the Gen3 SHO for 1oo k.
Yeah, you're right the v8 is a maintenance nightmare. Worse yet, parts are running out. Probably for the best, it was never a good car. It has potential but you're better off modding a Maxima if you're looking low cost/reliability/potential from a sedan. No 5 speed with the Gen3 sucked.
MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 2 years ago
yea i guess its ok but id rather have my contour svt over the the any of sho except for tha '10 of course lol.
i like my svt it wasnt expensive i had everything planned out b4 i bought it its decently fast stock and handles good and dont forget bout tha midnight blue leather lol
streetracer44870 2 years ago
I'd rather have your SVT too. I have been looking at craigslist for a long time looking for AT LEAST a v6 Contour with a 5 speed not necessarily an SVT (because I'm a tight wad).
My exGF bought one new and I always thought they were pretty cool. SVTs are real proper!
I'm also scoping for a MX3. I have a Gen3 SHO, Gen2 SHO and a '95 Probe GT right now.
MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 2 years ago
im tryna find another svt for my friend we auto-X at skool n shit n ive been searching CL for one.
id rather have mine from new but i bought it off the original owner for 3200 so not bad still over 100k miles but idc since im in the process of bulding up a 3L
and hows the gen2 sho working for u? i hate the probe bcuz everybody up here has or had a riced out one lol.
lgisdatdude 2 years ago
Gen1/2 SHOs are cool so long as you can find that has not been neglected. Lots of good ones are starting to become available because original and 2nd owners are moving on. I was lucky enough to buy mine with 60k on it from an rich guy. The paperwork was like an inch and a half thick, so it was well cared for. It was $2.5k. You can make a lot of good, side money replacing timing belts and checking valve clearances/replacing shims. Shops charge $1k for this service. You could make $600 each car.
MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 2 years ago
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO opinions vary, does everyone need a manual? no. does everyone live their life a quarter mile at a time? no. i will take auto anytime. most people dont know how to shift right anyway
steeldragon20002000 1 year ago
Well, as one that can drive a stick and replace the clutch if the pressure plate/friction plate if it goes bad. Give me a manual anyday! Unfortunately 98% of America doesn't know how to OWN an automatic transmission. Apparently, they think ATF is 'Jesus Juice' and never needs to be replaced.
The Gen3 SHO's auto tranny is a NOTORIOUS P.O.S. I will soon replace my current tranny in that car with a heavy duty one at the cost of $5k because of looming failure. Does that sound "good" to you? Peace
MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 1 year ago
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO not everyone wants a manual
steeldragon20002000 1 year ago
Sometimes, I get lazy and I don't want to drive my cars that have manual transmissions. Having said that, a properly driven, but neglected manual transmission will FAR outlast even an automatic transmission that has received half way decent care. That's all I care about. As we all know The SHO autobox is not a durable machine and was originally built for the punk ass Tempo. Thanks for your input.
MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 1 year ago
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO you can convert it to manual, its been done
MThomas92 2 months ago
@MThomas92 Yeah... I know Thomas92.
Peace.

91Taurus 2 years ago
@91Taurus That goes for Mustangs GTs and well pretty much anything. I've seen bone stock GTs kicking it pretty darn close to the 12s and bad drivers hitting 14s.
pcfxer 1 year ago
I was always told 6.6 for the 89 but different times for the 90's and up. I could be wrong but I owned a 89 and it was faster than my 93 converted 3.2 MTX. I had a blast with my 89. Was way more dependable too. Go for it.
pdd420 2 years ago
@JoZuko The 3.2L auto had a 4-speed that did about 7.5 for the first 60 mph. I've seen from 6.4-7 seconds flat with a five-speed. Also, the 1989 SHO was the lightest of the bunch, so acceleration was probably universally most impressive for that year.

konachai1 2 years ago
I have a 2007 4 door Tauras and i dont need a newer car. I dont get why people need "fast" cars. It's not like they're going to go over 150 anyways...
loneknight97 2 years ago
The top end of my car is about 147 mph, I would never do that, but i do enjoy the acceleration very much. Amazing torque also 258 ft lbs, great power out of a 3.5. I like it because if I need the power it's there. 0-60 in 5.9 sec. love my Navigation, and use it all the time, finding places in the Montreal area. I would love to own a m6 but it's out of my league.
konachai1 2 years ago
I dont own the M6 but my father bought it last year. About a month ago, he was going really fast and nearly hit a car so his lisence is on hold until May 2010. My mom can't stand fast cars so she drives her Volvo V70. I am allowed to drive the M6, whenever i want, but it's hard to handle. I've also gotten it keyscratched at a parking lot.
loneknight97 2 years ago
Your stories have BS plastered all over them. They have all of the regular indicators of a someone trying to sound like a big shot. I couldnt help but notice that you said "I have a 2007 4 door Tauras[sic] and i dont need a newer car. I dont get why people need "fast" cars." Yet you go on to state in a separate conversation that you have a 2009 Mustang GT.... both newer and faster. Hmm. And then you brag about how fast your dads m6 is. Hmm. One minute you are 23, the next you are 19. Hmm.
philritter21 2 years ago
Ok I was making up the thing about my dad's M6, just so that annoying douche who said he had the Z4 would get off my back. The reason i said i have a Mustang GT is because I got a great bargain on it. My Tauras is going to get sold, and I will drive the mustang. I got the mustang for only $15,900 brand new because teh delership needed to get rid of them for their 2010 mustangs to come in. Now, keep finding more erros in what i write. I dont give a damn what u, over the internet, has to say.

SHO Taurus is infamous for being a street-sleeper. Once the front tires hook up they are every bit as fast as the 5.0L LX Mustang. The automatic ones are crippled by the transaxle's parasitic power loss.
duanedragon2 2 years ago
"every bit" is putting it lightly.. "spanked a 5-oh" is more like it! even better when a ricer thinks it an old rental.. still a secret and unsuspecting car to alot.

I've had 2 SHO's, and I have an 89 LX notch now, and an SHO wouldn't touch it.

IS there anyway to improve the Automatic's transmission so there won't be any powerloss?

They gave the automatic version an extra .2L displacement for extra torque to account for power loss of the auto. It's still slower though.

It should have the next best thing, dual clutch 6 speed. Think of a manual trans that does the shifting for you. It is lighter than an auto, doesn't have a complex hydrolic valve system and uses a dry clutch system.

And the SHO is still a satisfying car to drive, even by today's standards. It's not overwhelming or rip-your-face-off fast, but it has enough hustle to stay entertaining on the right roads. If you can find a good deal for one that hasn't been shit bagged, it's worth it.

How many miles do you think a 1989 Ford Taurus LX could handle on the original motor?
150,00?
bigshuckbrnxbombers 3 years ago
I'd say it depends on what motor you have. If you have the 3.0L Vulcan engine than be thankful cause those engines are tanks and even with almost no maintenance can go over 300,000 miles.
The Taurus engines are generally good but the auto trannys are junk
