In the books he never died. He was simply mutilated to te poin where he was no longer able to reveal Dexters secret. I don't remember exactly, but i think he got his toung cut out, his feet amputated, his arms amputated and eyes cut out. So yeah, his fate in the show was by far preferable to the alternative.
