I always thought the reason Wesley was added was to show a newly joined starfleet officer at the star of his career! he is gonna make mistakes and be annoying but it shows the progress of someone from cadet to the finished article! it adds more realism to the star trek universe! this was after all a galaxy class starship with people of all ages on board! you don't become like Jean luc or Kirk overnight! it takes years of service!

Was he the most developed and interesting character on Star Trek? No. Could he get annoying at times? Definitely. Was he occasionally too precocious and arrogant? Yes, absolutely. But I don't think that justifies the inexplicable, raging hatred some people have for him.

This show started when I was five years old so I personally liked Wesley, but I can also acknowledge that this wasn't meant to be a kids' show. I think Troi's problem is that her character's job rarely had much to do with the actual plot. And note that no one, in seven years, noted the bizarreness of the captain having his therapist with him on the bridge.
