Neville Chamberlain has been grossly misrepresented. Those shouting appeasement fail to note there wasn't a darn thing England or France could have done militarily to stop Hitler in the Sudetenland or Czechoslovakia. All knew that, later proven true by defeat of French & British forces on the continent.

At the time, negotiated settlement was the best hope for a positive outcome. The ultimate failure of that was not Chamberlain's fault. Increasing demands, by ALL parties, was more to blame.

@stewartx5 When Germany invaded Poland, its border with France was practically udefended (only 10 divisions). French could have enter Germany without resistance and cut off German supplies. Even Hitler was afraid that decisive French intervention would be catastrophic for him. France did nothing, and later it faced reequipped German army which had very good battle plan.

@IBOGAINE1 you can't say that for sure. in 1935 a ballot showed that over 10million households in britain supported peace and appeasement. with horrific memories of the first world war still in everyone's minds, there would have been a public uprising in britain had chamberlain declared war earlier.

also, britain's army was pretty much non-existant at this point. appeasement at least gave 12 months in which to prepare for battle.
