  • turned it off after the first 60 seconds of battlestar galactica talk. thought this was a scotch review..? oh well, enjoy your crown 'royale'? and crovosier...?

  • I like how everybody just flames like an idiot and you keep calm in your responses. Im new to whisky too, just keep up the tasting and the good work.

  • @Nerthus12 Hehe thanks Nerthus, stuff like that used to make me mad, but after the 100th time someone spouts off at you for no reason it just seems to lose its effect. As they say, hater's gunna hate. Cheers!

  • A mix of crown royal and jack daniels....

  • Oh man, I cant believe you compared it to mix of crown royal and watever. thats like comparing starbuck and snooky. And btw, the best glass for scotch is "glencairn". Am glad you didn't add coke or pepsi, I've seen ppl mixing good scotch with coke. Thats like raping a hot girl friend rather than making love.

  • @swades1947 Hehe, I would be interested to try it again now after I've had a few years of scotch/whiskey tasting experience. At the time I think this was my first scotch. Maybe I should buy another bottle!

  • Recommendations: add a little water to some to unlock flavors. Read up on the various regions of scotch whisky production. That will give you a better idea of what to expect. Try Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich 15, Balvenie, Glenfarclas, Highland Park, Talisker, Lagavulin, Caol Ila.

  • you definitely have a lot to learn about scotch, but you seem like a decent person so good luck in learning more about scotch. it is some truly great stuff. i recommend watching some of the vids of charles maclean and richard paterson. they really know what theyre talking about when it comes to scotch whisky.

  • My favourite 12 year old scotch whisky is definately Highland Park. Give it a go Shaykai.

  • A really nice dude. I'm glad you are getting into scotch whisky. Reminds me of when I first started tasting earlier this year. I have learned a ton in the process... even started my own tasting blog. I'd be really happy to see you get into it more. Keep it up!

  • Also, Ben, my name too, not all scotch is smokey Islay pronounced I-la scotches from the south of scotland are smokey, Highland scotches like Macallan, glenmorangie are not typically smokey or peety, lowland aka islay scotches are, for example, lagavulin, and lafroiog

  • What a waste of exquisite whisky, I've just picked up a bottle and looked for some insight and this dude knows nothing. BTW 37 bucks at bevmo, I drink a lot of bourbon and a lot of scotch and it's a shame this guy is drinking this fine beverage...also ice or water is fine, it opens the whisky up and does not dilute flavor, it just lowers proof and is a perfectly exceptable way to enjoy scotch

  • Too much whisky on the glass. I suggest to use a wine glass or a Glencairn.

And yes, adding water opens up better the flavours.

  • the review is like an unsophisticated ape standing in the presence of God trying to describe the experience by writing shit on cave walls using banana peels.

  • @Markohoppis Relax Markohoppis :)

  • @Markohoppis calm down I've stood, I've smelled, I've tasted. I've not been impressed. Macallan 12 is ok at best, I've had a better experience with The Glenlivet 18, All the Highland Parks, and Lagavulin 16. I'd say those are 3 are closer to your description, The Macallan 12 is simply an apostle introducing you to the faith.

  • @Markohoppis funny

  • Macallan good Sctotch. Try Lagavulin. It's pricey, but worth it. Trust me. I have been drinking it ever since I tried it in Germany. Great stuff.

  • thats nun you wunt to dreank some good get a blue label whisky

  • crown royal with cheese?

  • Here's what my father told about whiskey...all whiskey. If it burns your tounge, it's no good. If it burns your throat, it's only a little better. If you feel the heat in your chest then it's good whiskey. All of these so called expert malt heads NEVER mention that!

  • @vulcan1429 Thanks for the advice :) I shall remember that.

  • @vulcan1429 so you expect us to believe something that only your daddy says is true? hm maybe im an elitist, but ill stick with the experts until you give some more evidence.

  • Keep it simple.don't swirl it in your mouth don't swirl it in your glass.. don't listen to all these malt heads. most of them are idiots.enjoy yourself.

  • Hi Ben,

    I enjoyed your video!

I'm also starting with scotch, a good friend brought me a bottle of Macallan 1984 Select Oak, after that I bought my first bottle of Glenfiddich 18 (which I really recommend you to taste).

Did you finish your Macallan already? Cheers, Alan.

  • Nice presentation mate, try this one

    Balvenie 12 Double Wood

    Keep on it!

  • I Hate Noobs... Tosser

  • We were all beginners once :)

  • Thanks. Being an amateur scotch drinker, I greatly appreciate this amateur review. I probably won't notice all the things a novice would. I think your reaction will be a lit closer to what mine will be. Thanks again

  • as a scotch drinker i must say a splash of water will bring out soo much in a good scotch and also have a seat and relaz to enjoy :)

  • Hey, Fun video!

Macallan 12 is a great place to start!

HAHA! so funny I was waiting for you to notice the vanilla and you mention it right at the end!

Anyway, try to taste past the burn/alcohol taste... the flavor lies beneath that. Take your time with a glass of scotch.

Nothing wrong with a little water to "open it up" try about 1 tsp or 2 to a 1.5oz. shot...

Check out these guys vids to learn a bit more:

    ralfystuff

    IslayScotchWhisky

    peatluvr

    Enjoy!

  • My favourite "cheapies"(~12 year old ) are:

    Balblair

    Old Pulteney

    Longrow

If you like smokey/peaty flavours your can't go wrong with an Ardbeg, Lagavulin or Laphroaig

  • I would recommend the Glen Dronach 15 yo. Much better than The Macallan in my opinion, see what you think of it. Slainte

  • Mightn't that be a bit expensive for him?

  • I hope not as it is well worth a taste. I think Macallan is a good dram but anything other than the std 10 yo is getting pricy and the fine oak is not for me-sorry, bit like damp cardboard on the nose. Try the 12yo glen dronach to, Excellent stuff. Enjoy

  • I agree - most affordable Macallans are overrated - OK, but not great. Too much added caramel.

  • @w0033944 Macallan, at least their 12 year Sherry Oak, doesn't add e150 anymore. At least it says so on the bottle haha...

  • @matt999tye Good news, thanks.

  • OK, I don't know what you've tried since this video, and I'm British so I don't know what various malts would cost in the US, but my budget is £30, and theese are malts I like and which would be good for you to get appreciation of the variety:

Glenmorangie Original (10 years) - complex yet light Northern Highlander

Aberlour 10 year - sherried, spicy Speysider.

If you want something peaty but not too medicinal, I've just tried Caol Ila 12 year, which is lovely.

  • Also look for Old Pulteney, Bunnahabhain and Cragganmore - all good, though perhaps the first two might be hard to obtain in California!

Also, don't add ice unless you're in the full sun at midday in July over there - a touch of water only,

  • that was really fun to watch. you got guts. im just getting into scotch too and wouldn't open my first bottle on utube. haha. keep it up.

  • You should try some Johnny Walker Black Label, that is my absolute favorite scotch so far :)

  • im actually drinking teacher's highland cream tnight. supposedly a very high rated blended whiskey like JW black label. i don't think i'm a fan of blended whiskey. my very first scotch was actually macallan 12yr old. i think i'll get a bottle for the weekend. runs about $80 canadian up here. stupid liquor taxes. thanks for the suggestion though! any other single malts you can recommend??

  • My friend greg really likes Oban scotch, I believe it is a single malt. It is definitely up there in quality, but a little pricey. I believe we paid $60 for the bottle we have.

  • I think you had a decent review for The Macallan 12. It really is quality Scotch and you were right about the smoothness then the burn at the end. Price wise, I can get the 12 for about 37 dollars but it usally runs about 45 to 50 near me.

  • @victory01 yeah I think the Teachers is shit

  • burbon! it will rock yur world

  • Macallan is very nice for sure. Try adding a little water to open up the smells. Try nosing the whisky neat then add a little water and see how this opens up the bouquet. Not all whiskys are the same type, the best are single malts (like the Macallan) the next best thing to look for on a label is "vatted malt" or "pure malt" this will be a mixture of two or more single malts. Then in third position comes blended whisky.

  • Balvenie Doublewood is a great scotch whisky for about $35-40. A little bit sweeter than Macallan and more complex. It pairs well with most cigars, it so good my girlfriend will sip from my glass.

    -Alpha

  • Canadian Club "classic 12"

12 y/o blended canadian whiskey is great stuff. Its not to expensive, nice and smooth with a nutty, vanilla undertones and aftertastes. Give it a shot.. one of my favorites . by the way nice skills with the throwing knives.

  • wonder what exactly is happening to liquor in the barrel well it ages.. what makes it taste better. i vaguely remember reading an article that said something about the types of alcohols that are in the drinks and how aging slowly eliminates the ones that cause a bitter taste.

anyone with good explination for me? my google skills are apparently not up to finding that article i possibly remember

  • I'm finding it different too. I'm drinking some right now. Not quite like any scotch I've had to date. Reco's: Talisker 10, Ben Riach 12 "Curiositas".

  • no no, quite interesting, you did a great review. we all start somewhere right?

crown royal was invented to give canadians something to do with all that ice :p

mac 12 was my first single malt also.

    thanks for sharing :)

  • Try Glenfiddich - they've got a good selection matured in different casks so you get to appreciate a lot of different flavours. I have to admit that you started with a good whisky. Happy drinking :o)

  • george t stagg + cohiba

  • "a cross between Crown Royale and Jack Daniels"

    really.

  • Haha give me some slack. I had only tried 3 whiskeys when I first tried this Macallan :D

  • All good, my brother - just giving you the business. I enjoyed your video and hope you enjoyed the scotch!

  • It's funny, the Macallen I tried in this video is probably one of my favorite scotches even though I've tried a few different ones now.

  • i really dont know what i like more. crown or jack. i think im leanin more towards jack. but i guess i should just try them side by side

  • You really should, it brings out a lot of different flavors that you won't get if you try them separately.

  • easy tiger! that a big double!

  • For the peaty flavours Ardbeg definately takes some beating, even the standard 10 is a thing of beauty! As for Talisker love it also. Love the 18.

  • you gotta try Chivas Regal, i only paid like $60 for it, i recommend it very much, and if u wanna go cheap then dont buy the 12 yr old Chivas Regal, the regular stuff will only cost like 20 to 30 bucks, peace

  • Lagavulin 16 years old. Best thing under 100$

    Try it now and weep.

  • Cigars are awesome. I got cherry, rum, and other such flavors.

  • try Talisker. scotch from the isle of skye very peaty and smoky. i like the 15 yr

  • i have a half bottle of johnny blue we can taste on saturday if you like. i don't taste any diff from johnny red, but i LOVE johnny black. very smooth.

the best i've had is actually oban 14 year old.

  • Nice :) bring it, and I'll bring my macallan so you can try that too.

  • Highland Park 12 year old is definately worth buying. It has also won some prestigious awards. The whisky Gurus seem to rate it very highly so its well worth giving it a go. It's about the same price as the macallan.

  • iv always wanted to try the oban especially the 32

  • Hahaha. All of your videos are interesting ;] This was pretty good.

  • yeah yeah was fun to watch xD.

    Cool shirt btw ^^

  • yeah dude that was interesting, keep em up

  • Crown Royal Is a great whisky for the price. me and my friends drink it every time we drink haha. also what is super good is Absinthe, but the kind that is legal lol. i had it once, it tastes like black licorice when it first hits your tongue and then it burns at the end. good stuff.

  • Tequila is my poison. I`ll have a shot or two every friday. Get the good stuff. the cheap tequila tastes like crap.

  • great commentary lol.

  • Stay away from J&B lol, that's cheap and tastes nasty.

  • that was interesting been, Never really pictured you as a alcohol type of person...

  • Yeah I'm not really, I guess i'm just more into 'cool stuff'. Same reason why I learned to throw knives or shave with a straight razor, they just seemed cool. Being able to taste whiskey seems pretty 'cool' to me (although maybe thats the media?), so i'm trying it out. Haha, like I said, I don't really get drunk at all, and this scotch is only for special occassions. I get drunk maybe once a year (if that).

    Ben

  • Oh lol I get it, oh yah, did u know that I started throwning knifes about the same time as you? Mostly kunai, but about a year ago I did watch you throwing knife vid,

  • kick ass video! you should do more of this taste testing. also recommendations for alcohol would be try to get your hands on a bottle of Killepitch or definitely Ratzeputz! both are excellent liquors. although the Ratzeputz may be hard to find cause my grandfather gets it from Germany and im not sure if they sell it here, cause it is pretty strong... 58% alcohol but it has an amazing unique taste that will never be forgotten!

  • I should have watched the video before commenting. In regards to whether or not you should produce more of these videos, Youtube is a place for you to express yourself and post whatever makes you happy. Go ahead, make me feel like a stalker. ^^

  • So nerdy, Why are you up at 4am(1am if western time)? X_X I couldn't sleep all night for the past two nights and I got to wake up at 5:30 am for college X_X

  • lol its only 2:35am here :D and today and tomorrow are my 'weekends'!

    Ben

  • kei :/

  • LMAO you're like me when tasting stuff.

    lol anyways sweet vid

  • Haha yeah, I'm definitely not scientific about it. My friend made fun of me for saying "This is weird" after tasting it haha.

  • actually a bit of water can enhance the taste...just a small amount. try jamesons whiskey, its one of my favs.

  • I might have to pick up some of that for my next bottle :) thanks for the recommendation.

  • Try the 19yo Scottish Malt whisky Lagavulin. really smoke and not too bad. bought it to my dad for christmas. It probably cost a bit more than that bottle but not with much.

do you think i should try what u were drinking?

  • Yeah I actually thought it was really good. I didn't film the rest of the tasting, but by the end of the glass I was really digging it and catching a lot of different flavors. Pretty good scotch I think, but this is my first scotch haha.

    Ben

  • Im not a very big fan of em tbh but sometimes its nice. I'm more of a vodka and beer person.

  • Louie the 13th remy martin cognac is similar to that where its very smooth and then gives a nice burn at the end but at 1700 a bottle that seems like better alternative cost wise but also that being a scotch it may be a bit diffrent.

  • ouch! 1700 a bottle!?! Haha yeah, a bit out of my price range. It would be great to have some rich friends with a nice scotch/cognac collection where I could just try a glass of each.

    Ben

  • 50 bucks for a bottle of wine? holy cow, I would rather get a case of Monster Energy drinks and still have some money left for other things. I've tasted alcohol, not really my thing, I dont see what the big deal about drinking or smoking, now gambling, that's another thing. I think it's best to buy some Monster drinks for bout 10 bucks and spend the rest of the money gambling. haha. well this video was pretty interesting, have fun drinking and watch your DVD, haha

  • Haha, gambling is too much fun! I could definitely get addicted to that, but smoking or drinking are just unpleasant enough where I don't think I'll get addicted anytime soon haha.

    Ben

  • This is interesting. Does the scotch have some sort of significance for the show?

  • Not really I guess, they just always seem to be drinking it haha.

  • Moderation. An old Turk told me to "never drink more liquor than you would plain water when your not thirsty"... of course he said it in turkish...

  • Lol, good advice my friend.

  • I like this saying alot...cheers.

  • And send me one of those shirts!

  • Haha I will actually. Just PM me your size and address. Do you want it in black?

  • Ok one more then I'm done....a small amount of water or ice can actually help bring out the subtle aromas and flavors of a complex whiskey/scotch. Just something to roll around. I've had lots of experience with alot of different kinds of scotches, whiskeys, pretty much alcohol in general so feel free to ask if you have any questions about what you are looking for in a drink. Also try the 12 year Jameson...and regular Jameson.

  • Interesting, I think I might try my next drink of this macallan with 1 ice cube and let it sit for a minute or so. This might bring out some different flavors as well as at that splash of water you were talking about. Question: Is the jack daniels single barrel the same thing as gentlemans jack?

  • no...gentlemans jack is in between normal jack and single barrel, but still excellent drinking whiskey. I would definitely encourage you to try both, although my favorite is Single barrel...oh and BLACK FTW!

  • Also, VO is is definitely NOT favoriteof mine. I know you are expanding your horizons a bit, so you should try it anyway, but it's not top quality stuff. When I was bartending I only sold maybe a bottle a week, as opposed to Single barrel, which was twice as expensive and sold close to 3 4 bottles a week. Try em all though man.

  • Battlestar Dramatica! I love it....and yeah scotch is different than anything else you'll taste. I am more of a bourbon drinker myself, higher end stuff, and I prefer it neat or with 1 ice cube. If you're not relegating yourself to scotch, you should try my absolute favorite, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel. I think you would like it, I'm serious. It runs between 40 and 50 bucks a fifth, but it's worth every nickel. Good on ya bro.

  • u would like conutuer if thats how its spelled

  • sorry it was pretty slow i enjoy hearin you talk but im under 21 so this really didnt apply to me plus i dont watch much tv

  • Noted. Next time I make a video like this I will try and include some other stuff so that all ages can enjoy it. Thank you for the feedback :) Let me know if you have anymore!

  • I actually kind of liked this video. Keep it up!

  • Thanks Phoenix :) I'll definitely be doing some more as I get different types of whiskey.

  • 2nd yess!!!!!!!! You're guys are gonna hate me.

  • looks good, i personally like vo as my numbr1 whiskey

  • Cool, is it called VO or is that an abbreviation for something? I'm really new to the whiskey scene...

  • yeah its called VO canadian whiskey, its pretty cheap like 20 a 5th

  • but it has the perfect taste, real smooth and a little bite
