  • "Such a fucking liar..."

  • @Blaze1289 that was straight up offensive and inappropriate. as a Christian i am OFFENDED!!

  • @scamartistry lol let jesus fuck you.

  • music from a deep soul...like Miles Davis or Coltrane

  • Que mentira, heim amigo brasileiro? Pete Townshend é um gênio.

  • My favourite Who song at the moment - great way for Roger Daltrey to close his recent gigs.

  • @WilburyVision Roger never sang this song.

  • @sd850 Not on the album, but Daltrey does sing it live at his gigs. It's on youtube to see.

  • @DrVonChilla; worthy words, well expressed sir.

  • I hope everyone (especially the youngsters) appreciates the TRUE musical immortals that still reside among us in the year 2011. It will not be long until all of them are gone; support them in their live performances & future recorded output while you can, because their kind will NOT be seen again.....

From a musical standpoint, we are ALL so fortunate to live in this time......

I feel truly blessed to have been a teenager in the 1970s and to have hung around as long as I have.....

  • @DrVonChilla im 16 and my world revolves around this guy! so want to see them in january 2012 im going to be so gutted if i miss such a rare opportunity of someone my age because i can't see such an event happening any time soon after! :(

  • THERE'S A SCHNOZ WORTHY OF A MILLION SMOOCHES!

  • @JTF12795 well, then better die now and do not get old, you want to? getting old is good..

  • i love this song so much, great album too.

  • lol 1:02

    "'Such a fucking liar."

Pete once said that he's never perform this live because he would look wierd with a tiny ukelele. Glad he changed his mind. Just beautiful.

  • I'm 15 and this is exactly the kind of music I've been searching for so long. Every Who album has songs that actually make me think. I hate today's music, it's so vulgar and repetitive with no creativity. I swear, I would do anything to go to a Who concert, or better yet, meet the guy who writes all their songs! Pete is an inspiration.

  • @scartissue94 pete writes about the human condition better than anyone.im 28 i listened to my dads vinyls when i was fifteen of the who and i am grateful for that.

  • Hopelessly devoted to you, forever. I completely love you, Pete. Pure genius.

  • Just came across this amazing clip...Wow...I've always loved "WHO BY NUMBERS" and to see Pete sing this song now (ie more recently than 1976..) it's just as brilliant as anything he's well known for writing (like "Pinball Wizard" or "Won't Get Fooled Again").

Pete Townshend is a treasure. One of the last truly great musicians, who has always had his pulse on the heartbeat of his generation. This brings nothing but joyful tears...so glad we still have Pete around! Love the man!

  • @DamGreek You said exactly what I would have. The album just reeks of Pete's frustration with his drinking issues and life in general. Sort of like "Empty Glass Vol I"

  • it's not Pete and a brass band. It's Pete and John Entwistle who plays all the horn parts on all the Who albums! Beautiful song and arrangement!

  • hail Pete!

  • To BlueRednGrey....

You are a true Wholigan. Everyone who watched this video came here for a reason. Pete Townshend has crafted something mysterious here. He relates to the angst of a teenager better than ANYONE. We can all relate to you situation. Mr. Townshend is truly a philosopher and is underappreciated and overlooked.

What a beautiful song. Words to live by right here.

  • Try to catch Roger doing this one on the Use It or Lost It tour...simply fantastic.

  • Mr. Townshend, your brilliance in this song, and your simply hypnotic voice saved my life. I almost committed suicide and this song saved my life, and now I live my life by this song. I love you, Pete.

  • Music has save my life so many times. Please be well, and hang in there. Prayers to you and kudos on your great taste in music.

  • Just wonderful song and love Pete's uke playing!

    Tony

  • this sounds different from the "by numbers" version. still great song though

  • This is EASILY one of the best Who songs. You are absolutely right.

  • Except its not really a Who song,,,is it.?

  • Yes it is!

  • Ahh you are paying attention.Yes your right it is a Who song. But it is only Pete and a brass band in the background.Well done ,for putting me straight. You win this months complimentry cheese hamper.

  • I don't get why people bash this song, one of my favorite Who songs.

  • i don't get why people bash "by numbers" it's just perfect

  • Ditto - my favorite Who album actually.

  • Yes , I think he's the greatest Songwriter ! .....and with Keith he had the best drummer in his band. Thank you very much

  • Genius! Genius! Genius Pete!

OMFG! i love this version and all The Who music...

    love from Argentina ,. =)

  • guitar god.... and a Ukulele god.

  • "Such a fucking lie!" XD

  • In beginning he does a little mistake and after that he say'd :" such a fucking line ! "

  • Such a lovely tune. Been listening to it for years and never tire of it. The Great Pete Townshend!

  • Someday poeple said: Clapton is God, but today we know that it's not true. Townshend is God.

  • @Carlosasmar Great words Carlos! Jai Baba!

  • love the lyrics by this man i have always loved so much...

  • I absolutely love this song, it's always made me happy just because of the tune and... I dunno, it's very calming.

  • Pete Townshend is the most brilliant human being that ever blessed the earth with his presence, and I love him with all my heart and soul..... why must moral constrictions keep us apart, Pete..... *deep sigh*

Even if you are 49 years older then me.... I love you, so, so, so much, it hurts~~

    ...Someday :)

  • @xxCapricious Beautiful words xxCapricious!

  • @xxCapricious This reads like a child pornography joke, and I disapprove.

  • This song got me through us navy boot camp great lakes 1981, BRILLIANT BIRDMAN!

  • when i depart, this is the one.

  • im coming round to this version now. it is a lovely song. Pete is the best.

  • so what? he wrote it thirty years ago, he can look off a page if he wants

  • The good thing about been the author is that you can do whatever you want to it,you are stucked in the past.

  • i think he's aloud to forget a few song's, he's writen hundereds over the years.

and how often does he play THIS one?

he can be forgiven i'm sure

  • *uke

  • Amazing that that little yuke makes so much music!

  • Check out Israel Kamakawiwaole on uke.

  • Lovely! Can this played on guitar by some chance?

  • my favourite song to sing of all time - thank you mr.t.

  • I LOVE this song! The Who By Numbers was ONE of the many great Who albums! GO PETE!

  • The Who By Numbers is so underrated! Lovely song Pete.

  • One of my favorite songs. So pretty. Pete is a genius.

  • This performance is from where?

  • "Basement Jam"

(free private gig for 70 Rachel Fuller's bloggers, I was one of them)

    4 dec 2005

    Oceanic Studio

    Twickenham - London

Pete Townshend, Rachel Fuller and her band, Simon Townshend, Mikey Cuthbert, Foy Vance

  • LOL cute!

  • Sorry...back for another go. The reason I love this song is it is a reflection in an ugly mirror. Pete has always had self-esteem problems and self-admittedly did everything to "get the girl". This song (and some stuff on his solo "...Chinese Eyes"' make it all ok for him, me, and hopefully, lots of you who still found a way like Pete (and Me) to be cool and accepted.

  • Love Pete. Love that song. But can't help noticing three things:

    1. He's shifted the key from that of the original recording (can't hit those higher notes anymore)

    2. Reading glasses (can't see anymore)

    3. Has to use sheet music (can't remember how it goes...although, it IS an old song...)

  • I agree with so many people about By Numbers being underrated. Even critics seem to just have listened to it. I bought the RMST version days ago and it was a brilliant trip of discovery,an unusual one. Great Pete's version.

  • definately agree there....by numbers is my favorite album by far....quadrophenia is great too, but there's something about by numbers that just raises it to another level entirely....

  • back for another listen...how is Who by Numbers so underrated after all these years. Only the real fans get it. So much about the Who slips under the radar because of their monstrous albums and hits. Amazing departures such as WBN get lost in the wake of the tidal waves of genius.

  • Wonderful! This song makes me relax!

  • That was beautiful. Such a genius.

  • Pete did an entire solo album, Who came first, as a tribute to his guru Mehar Baba and, although the album is excellent, this song conveys everything he wanted to say in that album and more, simply, and under 3 minutes.

  • I love his music and I love this guy, his humour, just everything

  • Every time I hear this song it brings a tear to my eye.

  • pete's most moving song...i just love it

  • i just got by numbers, and i think every song is great except "in a hand or a face."

  • i really love this song, i think that it's very beautiful and amazing... it's one of my favorites of the who... pete has a great voice

  • i really love this song, i think that it's very beautiful and amazing... it's one of my favorites of the who... pet has a great voice

  • My favorite song off my favorite Who album!

  • I think this is one of my faves from mr pete there amazing and great post!

  • If 'numbers' and Townshend are your preference, give PT's "Rough Mix" w/Ronnie Lane a listen. Although, it might be too mellow for some.

  • The Who By Numbers is a truly amazing album..Does not get the credit it deserves. Pete is one of the best of all time!

  • "such a fuckin' lie"--Pete. that's hilarious! so inappropriate, but great performance!

  • credit where its due...pure brilliance!!!!

  • so sweet , pete is the teacher , fantastic

  • It's always Pete's obscure ones that make me feel better. This one is just too good.

  • Lovely.

  • I totally agree. By numbers never gets the credit it deserves.

  • This is a unbelievably beautiful song. To me "By Numbers" is a very underrated album.

  • very cool.. didnt even know this existed

  • Awesome! By Numbers is still one of the best Who albums.

  • Which other one???
