The potassium iodide catalyzes the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide.

The hydrogen and oxygen are trapped by the liquid soap and make a "marshmallow". This is frequently called 'elephant's toothpaste'

I tried this in the lab...the reaction is reated really slow. Can I know the amount of hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide use in this? Because the color I get is a yellow color, and is not foaming up like this

@siumian you need to use 30% hydrogen peroxide. This is available at a chemistry store or online. Most pharmacies and drug stores only sell 3%-6%

@OhYesItsMex3 you can do it with iodine too. that stuff you can get at a walgreens if you cant get your hands on potassium iodide. Iodine is pretty much just liquid oxidized version.

let me check if i got it, the peroxide reacts with the soap forming water and oxigen, doing a little foam (because of the oxigen) but somehow with the addition of KI it burst out, why??? does the water has something to do??? maybe its because the formation of potassium hidroxide and ioridric acid, but what with that???

No, you shouldn't eat it.

The 'marshmallow' is actually just a foam formed by the oxygen gas being released through the soap mixture when the Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) breaks down into Water (H2O, released as steam) and Oxygen (O2).

So, the foam is basically just really fluffed up soap.

There actually shouldn't be any Hydrogen Peroxide left in the substance after the reaction is complete (or negligible amounts), but there will still be Potassium Iodide (KI) in it.
