My daughter found this video for me. I was stationed at Dow from Dec.1965 until May of 1968 then a tour in Vietnam. I've never forgotten my time at Dow and the great guys I was stationed with. I miss it. I go back to Bangor and visit Dow several times a year as I have family in the area. It saddens me to see the 3 remaining barracks and the empty area where the BX mail room bowling alley etc. were once located. Its all gone.
I lived in Bangor in the early 60's as an Air Force brat, my father was a radio gunner on a B-52. Saw very little of him when on alert, he would come home for a few hours to play with us ( I'm the oldest of 5) in his flight suit. Dad's helmet would swallow me up!! LOL. In 1966, we moved out west, my father was transfered to Beale AFB in Marysville CA. Thanks for posting this video of Dow AFB, it brings back alot of fond memories...
I lived not far from the (Boneyard) at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson and experienced the flights over the house of all kinds of aircraft retiring to the boneyard, witnessing the plane's last flight.
I grew up living right next door to the base. I lay in bed many nights and heard the big planes and later jets taking off and landing, rattling the windows on our house. At the end of the street was a chain link fence and you could see the mess hall. One time our beagle, Daisy got lost and we saw her tied up outside the mess hall. I don't know who Mom and Daddy had to call to get her back. Many friends were Air Force "brats" who had lived all over.
Just a note to thank you for finding and posting this series of videos. I returned to Bangor as a former dependent of an Air Force officer who was stationed at Dow in the late fifties and early sixties. I was born here but raised in England. When Dad returned with us stateside we ended up at Travis AFB near Sacramento Ca.
Dad then retired and he and mom drove all eight of us cross the us. Been here ever since. Mum and Dad are buried here... the place they loved the most in this world. Dirigo!!!
