@ThriftyCougar look at the numbers: MG42 That means it was put in use no earlier than 1942. Before that main MG was the '34 one, designed in 1934. This "here" MG is of 1927 year of design. Feel the difference.
@VasilyKiryanov You're 100% correct. That said, the MG42 really is technically better due to the fact that it was belt fed and had a much more intuitive barrel changing system (the DP is a nightmare to re-barrel in a combat situation).
I'm genuinely unsure of why Degtyaryov chose to go with the Lewis style pan system when he could've just as easily used a modification of the Bergmann MG15 pattern feed system to make it belt fed.
Degtarjev was called "Emma" by Finnish soldiers in wwII because of the disc-like magazine and at that time there was a popular song called "Emma" and it was played of course from discs of gramophones in that time. Finns captured thousands of DP-28's and they were in use until 70's. A very reliable weapon shooting a powerful round with plenty of rounds "ready to play".
Those mags are a pain in the ass to load... you have to wind it with one hand while putting the rounds into their respective slots inside the pan with your other hand, and if you miss a slot you have to charge the rifle again in mid firing and if you put a round in wrong you can jam the whole mechanism. That's one of the reasons pan mags never caught on... that and it takes about 3 minutes to load each mag...
It was designed in the 1920's, when one of the ways to fit more than 30 rounds into a Machinegun magazine was to follow the Lewis Machinegun design, which is what Degtyarev did. Also there was reportedly a "mechanical" faster loading method, used by supply units.
A DP-27 Machinegunner would take at least 3 loaded magazines into battle in a metal box or easier to carry(and easier to damage)fabric bag, it was possible to carry more than 2 bags for 6 or more magazines.
In our WW2 reenactment group we've got the subgunners to carry the bags for the DP28 guys. Of course they usually get stuck with loading the mags too (which takes about 5-10 minutes per mag depending on how many rounds the gunner requests in it). I'll take my PPSh any day.
Loading the 71 round magazine on the PPSh is not any easier, unless of course you have the faster loading 35 round magazine which was introduced in 1943.
Plus the firing range of the DP-27 is better than the PPSh-41, each had its purpose. I certainly would not want to fight with only a few Maxim Machineguns in my Battalion.
Excellent point, every gun in the battalion has its place, and as long as we're killing Germans, then we're doing our job, and the NKVD won't need to have a word with us lol.
I know it shoots rifle caliber ammunition and therefore has all the advantages of this that pistol ammunition of the PPSh-41 does not. The poster Thatevilmidget suggested using the PPSh-41 instead of the DP-27, and I said both had their place. If there was a choice of a weapon other than DP-27 than I would say the AVS-36 Automatic Rifle, it could be used as a Platoon level Automatic Weapon, and was in some situations.
its a pancake gun...the magazine is round like a pancake and then when you reload in COD you flip it over....so its like your flipping a pancake....thats why i call it a pancake gun.....its awsome pancake gun FTW@!!!
gives u a plain on which to base the target. so your not pointing at a full circle it narrows it down to half of a field of vision. beneficial for elevated targets. best i can guess haha. hope i helped.
Uhh no shit, there's no way to load it with it on the rifle. I meant loading it as in putting the magazine on the rifle. Also I'm well aware of how it feeds.
It's not gravity fed. The gun will fire upsidedown as well. The spring in the mag keeps the rounds pushed to the opening and the bolt is what forces the round into the chamber.
No, and they're all medium or general purpose machine guns. Light machine guns like the RPK, RPD, M249, Stoner LMG uses intermediate rounds such as 7.62x39mm or 5.56mm NATO rounds. Medium machine guns use full size rifle rounds like the 7.62 NATO, 7.62x54R, or in the case of the MG-42, the 7.92mm Mauser.
Umm sorry dude. The Mk. 48, M240, and the M60 are all light machine guns. Look it up on wikipedia or any other website. You have no clue what you are talking about.
First sentence on the entry for the M240 on wikipedia:
"The M240, formally Machine Gun, 7.62mm, M240, is a family of belt-fed, gas-operated medium machine guns firing the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge (w/ M13 Link). It is the US designation for the Belgian FN MAG 58 (Mitrailleuse d`Appui Général, "General Purpose Machine Gun") machine gun."
You're the one who obviously has no clue what you're talking about.
"Modern light machine guns often fire smaller-caliber cartridges than medium machine guns,"
It lists those guns as light machine guns when they first came out. They're medium machine guns now. And nowhere does it list the MG42, which you called a light machine gun. Learn to read.
Then explain why the PKM, BAR, and MG-43 are all classified as light machine guns. They're all full powered rifle rounds.
The M240 is NOT a light machine gun because it's far too heavy to fit in that category(nearly 40lbs) Light machine guns are machine guns small enough to be readily carried by a soldier without assistance.
Wow, you really are an idiot. The PKM is the M240's Soviet bloc equivalent, and they are both medium machine guns (they weigh 20 and 25 lbs. respectively). I don't know where you got the information that the M240 weighs 40 lbs., but it certainly shows how dubious your sources are. The BAR is a WWII era squad automatic weapon whose classification at its advent is irrelevant to modern weapons. There's no such thing as an MG-43, know you're just making up guns. Stay out of a settled argument idiot.
1. This weapon holds 47 rounds in a pan mag for durability and convenience.
2. This weapon was only deployed in small numbers until the cheaper and better DP-28 replaced it.
3.The 7.62R ammunition is the right size of ammunition for an LMG of that time.
5. Guns in video games are often changed, tweaked, and
given different rates of fire. Don't beleivre a video game. In Bf1942 the Breda modello 30 is shown reloading from a detachable box when it really is loaded from stripper clips!
The gun in this vid is a DP28 (wrongly called a DP27), it was made by the thousands. The DPM replaced it in 1944, adding a pistol grip and moving the recoil spring to the rear.
Germany got DP'ed in WWII... =D
