Childress was such a driver, and started his first race as a replacement.
By 1971, Childress began racing on the top level as an independent driver, using the number 3 as a tribute to Junior Johnson's past as a driver. Although he never won as a driver, he proved to be excellent behind the wheel registering six top-5, seventy-six top-10 finishes, with a career-best of third in 1978. His last race was 1981 Winston Western 500 (Riverside).
From Wikipedia: "The day was fortunate for CBS as a major snowstorm known as the Presidents Day Snowstorm of 1979 bogged down most of the Northeast and parts of the Midwestern United States, increasing the viewership of the event. The race introduced two new innovative uses of TV cameras: The "in-car" camera and the low angle "speed shot", which are now considered standard in all telecasts of auto racing."

@angelboy10able I'm sure tons of people shown in this race are dead now. Probably more from the audience than guys on the track tho.

Why does the ESPN Classic transparent logo say Daytona 500 1976?
tubeyou443 2 years ago
Mistake. It's right on the last parts of the video.

Great stuff. Used to have this on tape when ESPN classic did "Daytona Week" back in 99. Fucking VCR destroyed the tape though >:(

Is this storm that rained at daytona is the same storm that snowed in the east coast?

Yes, it was...it was one of those "Nor'easter"-type storms that effects the entire Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Miami in a significant way.
