Questlove is great because he can play the same drum beat over and over throughout a song? I'm sure he's a great drummer but this is a song a 10 year old could start out learning. You don't even need tabs for this!
?uestlove is great because he can create beats like this. Sure anyone can learn them, but can most people create them? No. The beats he creates fit the songs perfectly.
@rysco23 This beat is like the easiest 4-4 beat there is. Anyone could come up with this for that song. It fits the song perfectly though, and ?uestlove is a great drummer so no disrespect to him.

Am I the only one that thinks that this is NOT how you play "The Seed" by The Roots? ?uestlove would never play or think of it like that. Listen to the guitar part, listen to the song.
Thanks Wally, got a lot out of these how-to series. But I still don't find any of your own tunes shown here. I realize chops on your own tunes are more advanced, but it'd be really cool if you disassemble one of your own. Love your CDs.
I think its very important to point out that Questo isnt actually accenting the hihat at all. He CRUSHES his drum tracks with compression and that causes the hihat notes that arent overlapping with a drum hit to pop out in the mix. Much like "When the levee breaks" if you listen to Bonzos hihat the lone hat note pops out due to heavy compression.
@SilentBombr Thanks for putting words in my mouth, chief. :) My point was that if you're recreating a beat from a song regardless of where the accent came from why not try to play it if it's possible? You basically said the exact the same thing in your next comment.
@SilentBombr But in response to your question, YES I DO think Questlove can still play hi hat accents at "130db". You're basically saying that because of the loud volumes he can't use any dynamics. I play at House of Blues across the US regularly and I guarantee my hi hat accents can be heard out front. And we are loud as hell. I also don't alter my parts just because they may not be heard. When I play a small venue where I'm not mic'd I still play ghost notes and buzzes. Think about it.
hippity hop music!

That is a very similar groove to Paralyze by Finger Eleven, only faster and less eighth notes.

I love the fact that you're playing this in trad grip. It's rare to see cats playing that grip in the rock world and even less in hip hop.

No doubt, he's great. I saw them backstage last year with Erykah Badu. Quest was the closest thing to Bonham I ever hope to see.

Good point. Still ain't no walk in the park though, but you do have a point.

fair enough, but when you're playing the beat live you may as well play the accents right? definitely makes it more interesting.
pharm817 2 years ago
@pharm817 Do you really thin Questlove plays those hi hat accents live.... The Roots play at like 130db, who can hear a hi hat accent?

May as well play the accents though if you're having a go on your own kit, makes it more fun and useful for yourself.
