Priya Srihar cannot fathom a world without Starbucks coffee. But actually India doesn't necessarily need Starbucks. They've got other coffee chains and plus, its one of the top ten producers of coffee in the world. So even if Starbucks were to open shop in India, they'd be sourcing the beans domestically. Indians have been drinking coffee for ages, so they don't have to be told that high-priced Starbucks coffee is the real deal.

@47f0 That 200 million was including the cost for the Americans and the Indians, as quoted by the Indian govt. offical in Mumbai. The Indians had put into action a huge amount of local government officals, police, new infrastructure and so forth. So definitely the cost to the US is substantially lesser than 200 million a day, but still is significant for any Presidential visit overseas.

I have also seen Royal Enfield motorcycles on display at Indian military parades. But could you give me any web links to Harley's deal with the Indian military? Thanks.

NEWS FLASH: Wal-Mart opening stores in India will not create any new jobs in America. Right now there are hundreds of domestic Indian entities that are supplying the established pan-Indian retail chains run by Reliance and Birla. So if Wal-Mart opens stores in India, they'd be buying most of their stuff from India-based suppliers and even the service side of the business would be operated from India. The only people who'd benefit in the US are the management and probably even the shareholders.

But if and when Wal-Mart opens shop in India, it'll find out that success in India is a tall order to achieve. All the trans-national car companies, telecom companies, consumer electronics companies have all found out that you can't compete effectively in terms of cost, with the domestic Indian companies on the same turf.

Maybe what Wal-Mart will do is go in, open up shop, and make a deal with those domestic companies, or just sell coke, pepsi, and Microsoft products. Who knows. I think India should tell the US to buzz off, since our country has clearly gone down the toilet, anyway.

@psxwarrior The best thing for Wal-Mart to do, is not open shop in India at all, but instead, to take a stake in one of the major national retail chains in India. Its the Koreans and the Japanese who've made more inroads selling successfully to the Indian consumer, than the Americans. Where the Americans have succeeded in India, are mainly in monopoly/duopoly-type markets, eg: Microsoft, Coke, Pepsi. They're going to get beat in a scattered marketplaces like retail, autos and electronics.

I'm not sure there is anything particularly special about this trip. I'm actually not that well informed about the relationship between the US and India. And I don't know how this trip might relate to economic problems here at home. Still, it does seem to show how corporatist has become the role of president.

Yeah, they're not fighter jets. C-17's are heavy lift transport aircraft. Something which India cannot afford. Look at the attempt to host the CWG. Even the organizers said it was a mistake to give India the CWG. The Indians thought it was some sick joke for their gov't to put on a sporting spectacle in the middle of the Delhi slums.
