He did not succeed in some roles due to his peculiar natural vocal timbre. However, this is one in which he just seems to own. Can't think of anyone in the past 40 years I'd rather hear sing this. He seemed to not prepare for the top note at 6:20 (have heard him sing it better), but who cares?
It was as if Verdi wrote this one for his high, light/bright voice. In some Verdi he does no shine, but not this one. No other modern tenor comes close on this one.
Please, release this in DVD, one of Verdi's minor operas but very great and what a cast as usual at the MET... Pavarotti as Oronte is nice and Ramey as Pagano is a miracle!!!!!!!!
Yes she did because she said to her son that the woman he love will never be him until he kneel before her God and that women is christian. obviously she want that her son covert his religion to christianity as she did.
wow youre comprehension is way off, the mother was actualy protesting against her son kneeling before a christian god, please read the dialogue very carefully.
The same advice you gave me I give you. read the dialogue again, more than that look for I lombardi in wikipedia. and last why the mother cross her self if she not christian. we came back to your question.
@loveluciano1 Of course you are correct. Sofia wants her son Oronte to convert to Christianity. That is entire Crux of this Opera orignally PRIOR to Verdi updated into the French Version & even changed the title.. Further I believe Act III when the conversion takes place indeed Oronte & Giselda are united under God.
yes I know I right, I just wanted to answer to the question of one of the users here that asked why the mother cross her self in this opera. and I found my self argued with him about this, while he is so convinced that he is right.
I think the particularity of Luciano Pavarotti was precisely to "sing heavyly" as you say : in his late 60, he had a very large voice wich confers to his singing a kind of low modulation. As for me, I prefer this voice to the one he had at his début. But it is a point of view...
The first time I heard this opera, it was sung by Luciano Pavarotti, registred in 1996 in New York. His voice was so powerfull, particularly in the aria "Come poteva un angelo". I am glad to discorver now this "live" version where the exquisite Pavarotti is at his highest. Nobody ever sang this part like him. Thank you maestro
I had the opportunity to be on stage next to Luciano at the Opera di Roma, 1969, for this opera.... he was at his best!!!!! What a voice..... thanks God for his to exist... and thanks for me to have a chance to be next to him.....even as a coprimario...
Thank you for posting this. This was the first opera I saw him in. I was in orchestra standing room, holding on to the railing because my knees were buckling. He opened a whole world up to me of incredible beauty and this was the beginning.
Grandissimo Pavarotti.

I have this video, I love the soprano but I forget her name, she did the Donizetti Queen Trilogy.
Please somebody post excerpts from the 60s Lombardi where he had the secondary role. And also Capuleti e Montecchi.
