Dave in his glory days had some amazing charisma. This band was equal to the sum of its parts. EVH was a one-in-a-million guitarist. Roth was the ultimate frontman, a mix of macho, clown, and effeminate. Mike A. was the rocksteady, good time bassist, holding down the best backing vocals in hard rock. And Alex is a good enough drummer. The Sammy days had a different but also great chemistry, esp. on 5150. Having just EVH/AVH/WVH and whatever singer for hire screws the chemistry up badly.
Why is it that Ed can be piss-drunk & not miss a note nor lick,plaing like he ain't even took a taste (even if he was,he's EVEN MORE or just as interesting). But Roth can get drunk & FUCK UP on the lyrics & talkin' too fuckin' much? . If It weren"t for ED,AL & MIKE I'd feel RIPPED OFF. I'm a fan of 29 yrs. so I can be critical. Unlike some who are "just" fans of the 1st period.It just got more serious & BETTER later.

Go read comments on vids from Scorpions 83 US festival, and many people will tell you the Scorpions stole the show and some people even walked out on VH's set.
