To even begin to calculate the total amount of tax an individual pays to the government, one would have to examine the books/records of each and every company whose products you purchase and attempt to calculate the amount of tax collected on that product by the manufacturer. Not even remotely possible.

Gov. Huckabee missed what I consider to be a most important point and that is that NO ONE today can state with any degree of accuracy what they pay in any given year in Federal Taxes! It is an impossible calculation. Why is it impossible? Hidden taxes on every manufactured item purchased. Corporations do not pay Taxes!!!! Corporations and all other businesses COLLECT taxes from their customers and then remit (pay) those collected monies to the government.

My only beef with it is the 23% rate; that will maintain government. What we really need to do is shrink government. Roads, bridges, defense, etc. will be taken care of if we stop trying to be a nanny state. I'd be more in favor of it if we had a 10% give-or-take rate. Even with the rate, I'd take this, but I'd be much happier if it had a ratchet-down feature that would take it down to 10% over a few years, with corresponding reduction in govt. spending and laws to prevent it from going back up.

It has to be revenue neutral or Congress won't pass it at all. 23% is nothing compared to what most people are already paying. With the rebate, most people will save money. The two variables that matter most about the Fair Tax are the tax rate and the poverty level. The progressiveness of the Fair Tax is directly proportional to the poverty level. Lowering the tax rate will pressure Congress to lower poverty level so, a ratchet-down feature would be bad.

Then the money left gets taxed when you buy something like a car for instance. You sell the car and are taxed again. The person who buys the car is taxed. And so on and on and on. Call your congressmen and find if they support these bills and if not, why not. The excuses they come up with are pretty lame.

Governor Huckabee ran on this idea for President. It's a fantasic way to raise revenue from everyone that should pay taxes including folks that make money and currently hide it from the government.

The fair tax is absolutely the way to go. As a Realtor it would spark home sales. There is now an embeded tax of 26% on homes. That would be replaced with a 23% fair tax. Beside that there are many people such as landscapers and waiters who cannot get mortgages due to hiding their income. They would no longer do that with the fair tax. Plus Prostitutes, drug dealers and illegals would have to pay taxes since it would be on consumption. Also no need for swiss bank accounts with no tax on savings.
