@HELLO2YOU3 I started with Sifu Dan Inosanto in 1980, and still am with him today. Also with Sifu Larry Hartsell, and many other JKD instructors. Muay Thai with Master Chai and others, BJJ with the Machados, Egan Inoue, Carlson Gracie Sr., Baret Yoshida, Marcelo Garcia, and others. And a lot of other training.
@theawakener7 Why does everyone in JKD who doesn't practice an interpretation like Burton's, or Paul's or whatever, always seem to think that grabbing or striking the groin will end a fight, or that it is easy to do from grappling positions? If you tried your bollocks grab from inside someone's guard, you immediately remove a structural component of your base that can be used against you. Triangles of course are an option and it isn't easy to bite from insidea triangle. You can also be swept
ok i watch jkd and i get guys doing mui thai and saying its jkd i watch boxing and its termed jkd and now im watching mma and you guys are saying its jkd. sooooooo can somebody tell me what jkd really is cause THIS is mma you can say its jkd but its bjj and wrestling mostly
@Tracer564 Yes- no weapons in MMA. No headbutts in MMA. No groin strikes in MMA. We also do a lot of training that is not in the test, such as having a partner draw a weapon at any time, pre-fight scenarios, etc. JKD is supposed to be about using whatever works for street self-defense. Muay Thai, wrestling, boxing, BJJ, FMA, Silat, and other arts are part of that mix.
@theawakener7 "Let it be understood once and for all that I have NOT invented a new style, composite, or modification. I have in no way set Jeet Kune Do within a distinct form governed by laws that distinguish it from "this" style or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my comrades from bondage to styles, patterns and doctrines." Bruce Lee
@theawakener7 JKD is about experiencing combat. The helmets allow you to headbutt at full power, unlike simply "simulating" a blow. You don't have to have power side forward to be JKD. If you think you must, then you have limited yourself, which is the opposite of freedom. Enjoy your training.
@theawakener7 We train all positions with groin strikes included. That way, they are ready to defend against such an attack. If a person in the guard goes for the groin, he opens himself up to a triangle choke. Simple.
@kmeyers85 It is the Macho MVP with a cage. I have tested it for over a decade and it is still my favorite. You can get it at our website for less than Macho charges.
I have recently started training with one of Mark McFanns Instructors here in the UK. I trained for 25yrs in various arts (mainly American Kenpo). The functionality and flow of this art blew me away and I have switched to JKD. Sifu Larry & Sifu Dan were not wrong all those years ago when they realised what they were learning was not enough and moved on. JKD is always moving forward that's what makes it unique. Great video, very pleased for those boys testing.
I agree- Original JKD is really fantastic, but no art has it all. That is why the philosophy of JKD is to constantly research and improve the approach. If you do not, the art becomes stagnant and dead while others move forward.
I'm a Marine, and I have been practicing Jeet Kune Do with other martial arts for years. I am coming out of a year of military training, and I will be stationed right outside of honolulu. This video just solidified your legendary reputation, I hope to train with you in the future.
Alot of people don't know this Sifu Larry was one of the better kickers Sigung Bruce had. All until he damaged his hip in a car accident. Then he had to work harder on boxing to trapping to grappling. Also he was a body guard and worked in Law Inforcement. This also colored him. Sifu Paul was more interested in winning the fight to get home safe.
Sifu Larry Harsel once made a comment at a seminar about the different look various instructors produced in students. Larry's peple had one look. Sifu Vunak's had another. I think all of Guru Dan's had a diff look. He said they all take different path's to get you to the same place. Paul's style looks alot diff than Larry's. But they were both influnced by JKD concepts which acted as a filtering process for the arts they were exposed too.
never mind then, I think you fail to recognize another saying from bruce.... martial arts should be ever evolving and should be constantly open for criticism and questioning.... the failed traditional arts have failed for that reason.... Mr Burton it seems your using Bruce's quotes to justify not following the main reason why JKD "IS" different... say what you want but our art, is distinguishable due to its rationality. the traditional martial arts fail to be rational and fail to ask questions
I see that JKDU practicioners don´t use the jun Fan structure (the fencing essence, the straight lead, etc). Is that because that structure is ineffective against modern styles of kickboxing (Muai Thay for ex) or because it´s difficult to be proficient with 2 o 3 days of training per week?
Thanks for your comment. We do use the Jun Fan structure, but because of the modern environment, our fighters must make changes as they test everything in sparring. To only use the JF structure would be following blindly instead of allowing each individual to find their own way, tested through hard sparring.
Wow, a whole year? I started training JKD in 1979. I am a full instructor under Dan Inosanto and under Larry Hartsell. I suggest that you read the Tao Of Jeet Kune Do, then go do some sparring with different people, then come back and check this video out again after three more years of training and sparring.
@BurtonRichardson yeah man THIS IS JKD. My teacher SIFU RAWSON is a full instructor under Paul Vunak...also has pictures of him with Dan Inosanto, Paul Vunak and his teacher all over his living room. The most awesome thing in the world is that Certificate (^_^) BEAUTIFUL! JKD Concepts n JKD Unlimited basically the same thing. I've been searching online EVERYWHERE for a class as close to realism as the one I go to and THIS is just as good if not better. Great job! Much respect
@thejijjic no my friend...JKD is MMA just without all the rules. I've been doing JKD for years now and THIS is real JKD. This has got to be the realest JKD i've seen on youtube TO DATE. This is not MMA you can tell because of all the illegal moves into the ground fighting like HEADBUTTS and all that type of stuff. JKD is more STREET while MMA is more of like a sport. THIS is the most realistic JKD online. Just as great and realistic as the JKD class i attend here in Connecticut.
This i understand but an instructer needs to be able to apply a wide variety of techniques, jkd is supposed to set us away from the pack and the usual mold and express ourselves, i missed out on the use of distance in these fights, no handtrapping it was as brawlish as ultimate fighting, dont get me wrong these men would be an honor to train with, very well conditioned and very knowledgeable its just a thought
Those who think that JKD has to look a certain way, don't understand one of Bruce Lee's most famous sayings:
"If people say Jeet Kune Do is different from "this" or from "that," then let the name of Jeet Kune Do be wiped out, for that is what it is, just a name. Please don't fuss over it."[
So you will say bruce meant with that: JKD isnt different from this and that? Well big misconception of inosanto and his students, turning jkd in the opposite direction of what it is.
"If people say Jeet Kune Do is different from "this" or from "that," then let the name of Jeet Kune Do be wiped out, for that is what it is, just a name." Bruce Lee
THMX1000- "So you will say bruce meant with that: JKD isnt different from this and that?"
Well, that is exactly what he said. JKD is totality, based on effectiveness in combat..
JKD is: efficiency, simplicity, economy in movement,, its based on bowing and fencing. it s not kali escrima bjj, grappling wc-thats inosantos mma, never what bruce has developed, or has taught. so if you do what ever you want, you cant caal it bruce lees jkd. its yours x, but not bruces, so you cant use the therm jkd, because it is not what bruce taught, non if it in this video, sorry...
Bruce Lee started with wing chun. Then he added boxing. Then he added fencing concepts. Then he added more kicking. Then he added some Muay Thai. Then he added judo. Then he added some eskrima. If he had lived, I believe that he would have continued to add more functional methods, while taking out other less functional techniques. If you stop improving the art, then it is a dead system.
You just have to understand, Bruce meant those words inside of JKD not adding things to jkd. For example use what's useful, reject what's useless: If you are in position to kick, than kick, don't punch...
Also if you are in close quarters position than punch, don't grapple, why should you punch instead of grappling- because of the efficiency, grappling takes to long to finish the opponent and it makes you vulnerable against his friends.
If you actually practice sparring in the clinch, you will find that grappling skill is absolutely essential if you want to strike safely. Otherwise, you will get hit as much as the attacker. Try it out yourself under full resistance conditions, not with a cooperative partner and you will see.
JKD, is also about being able to fight and win in all ranges. No person's JKD is going to be the same. I think what you are hung up on is the core of Jun Fan (which in the vale tudo match I did see, in the form of short lead leg round kicks). Bruce grappled (Gene Lebell), Bruce boxed (an avid student of the sweet science with easily the most beautiful and technical cross i've ever seen). Bruce was constantly evolving.
JKD is not an art but a way of approaching total fighting.
thanks. I've actually been thinking about this quite alot lately, spurred on by several youtube and other web resources with titles like "Real JKD" that I think rather miss the point of the philosphy underlying Lee's approach. I'm preparing a blog about it. I'll send you the link when I finish.
If you don't see some of the traditional moves it is because those techniques are very difficult to apply against a skilled, aggressive fighter. As Bruce Lee said, "Efficiency is anything that scores."
This is a very hard test. Burton will put you against very skilled opponents when you are tired. That will test your spirit and your will to keep fighting.
Exactly. A big part of the test is dealing with pressure, even when you are tired. This translates into everyday life, so that when things get tough, you know that you can push through because you have done it before.
Thanks for the kind words. Those interested in dropping the ego and training against real resistance gain a great deal from the training. I am glad that I was helpful in your martial quest.
Great question. In the next few weeks I will put up Ken Eberle's test that was taken a few years ago. He was 49 at that time. He went pretty hard too, and did a fantastic job, but we usually adjust the intensity downward for older instructor candidates. The point of the test is to see the person perform under pressure and resistance in all the ranges. Thanks for asking.
Hey Burton, just wanted to ask a question. Do you have any older guys (over 40) that have complete your instructor test? Seems like you mostly have younger guys being certified.
finally a true jkd academy without bs much respect to you guys.
