  • He and Ari Hoenig need a gig together hahaha. Awesome!

  • He absolutely incredible but It kinda looks like a Preparation H commercial too.

  • Entitled: "Sounds of the Piano - The Insane Asylum Edition."

  • Crazy string cheese going down right here. Hold on tight

  • not for me stick some errol garner on ....

  • Keith Jarret IS the piano, and the piano is hyperactive.

  • for the love of god and all that is good where the hell is the rest of this concert!????!@#$%^&*

    absolutely spectacular clip.

  • one of the greatest improvisors of all time.

  • This would make a great anti-crack advert!

  • Divine insanity. I love this performance. Agreed with one of the comments below, he's high on piano. I'd pay top dollar for a gram of it if it was available.

  • The master sculpter told his student "I've just finished this sculpture, what do you think of it?" The student said "Master, It's beautiful. And the hands are so perfect. It's as if they are real!" So the master asked his other student and the other student said "I love it. It's wonderful. And the hands, the hands are exquisite. They're so life like!" The master then picked up his hammer and broke both hands off of the sculpture and then said "The hands were distracting from the art".

  • fa schifo

  • He was probably just high.....on piano

  • What the hell is he doing?

  • His relationship with the instrument is unique, and just he can understand what he feels, but it´s awsome how he can pass it along to the public. His ups and downs! Awsome till´ today!

  • Sounds like one of those shreds videos...;)

  • Black a Lang Lang !!

  • Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick!!!

  • chill out man...wow...

  • que enfermo

  • get down!

  • YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • This kind of playing is SO liberating to the mind and soul...even if a player borrows 5% of this, they're changed forever!

  • he was 22 back then and already playin so great lines.

    This is awesome.

Love it when it goes to swing ( at the end ) --> great flow

  • I love this though, awesome improvising!

Sorry, but I just feel like saying: @1:11 someone is having a temper tantrum!

  • Someone had a spaz attack...

  • Why is he playing jazz while moving his head to metal music?

  • Nice !! Sounds like his early playing is influenced by Paul Bley !!

  • he speak so well with the instrument...

  • That is so funny that jack de johnette made him go crazy

  • aaaaaaaaaaa

  • I will transcribe it and play on my violin - I expect lot of fingering and bowing problems

  • Comment removed

  • Try moving like that and playing like that at the same time. Impossible. BRAVO KEITH!!

  • This is headache music at its best.

  • they don't make acid like that no more!

  • Keith Jarrett is a prophet, and his medium is piano. rearrange petrof and you get profet

  • Keith Jarrett is a prophet, and his medium is piano.

  • This is ridiculous!

(...I keep coming back to it every few weeks precisely because it is a real keeper!...)

    Sincerely,

    Bill McBirnie

  • He is so amazing....it is unfortunate that he is such an asshole

  • @pakalthegr8 : only the music counts

  • i love him, genius...

  • Amazing! Thanks for sharing :)

  • Is he autistic?

  • he can gesticulate and sing all he needs to to get the music out and everyone else can go to hell.

  • 2:18 :D genius

  • it looks like he has multiple sclerosis

  • Keith - the man who escaped from the madhouse. :D

  • What's impressive is how much even in 1967 he already sounds like he does today. Clearly a musician who developed early and has spent his time since then refining his style.

  • Keith JArret Shreds :D

  • DECAF

  • struggle?? I don't think so. In worst case it's the piano struggling with Keith :)

  • Tourette's moment :)

  • wtf is wrong with this guy

  • wtf is wrong with this guy

  • Splendid !!

  • Man, he's gorgeous)

  • Keith Jarret is the god of piano.

  • Keith Jarret is the piano

  • I feel sorry for people that don't understand this music. All you have to do is toss out the harmonic straitjacket you've been wearing for years and open yourself up to the possibilities inherent in music-making within the formal constraints imposed by tradition. Keith is a fine player and this is simply one side of what he loves to do. It's that simple really.

  • @aceindaplace harmonic straitjacket you've been wearing for years? P.U. Talk about self-righteous pontificating.

  • @aceindaplace What did you do yourself to break free? And what do you play?

  • Well, it 's just messy bullshit which prostitute the idea of freedom to exist. He doesn't feel anything, but he tries hard apparently... and he pretends badly this excited worm... It will not remain...

Everything is poison, nothing is poison, it depends on the dose. Enjoy good drugs, do not be afraid, and take yourself to the next level !

  • @ToutanKanar this is not about feel and music is never about feel its about the thought process the musicians provide the thought process in which this case is very interesting musically, you define it by how you want to feel, it every1 feels the same piece diff.

  • thank you for this video, I didn't know it.

  • this one is really fantastic!

  • What I think is great about Keith Jarrett, from the fact that he is one of the greatest players ever, is that he is free when playing the piano. He is expressing himself physically and mentally and I think that is one of the things that makes him greater.

    Jesper, Denmark

  • I think he's restating the head towards the end of the clip - hence his playing is less free and more melodic. he moves less, as well.

this clip is really excellent though - even his 'note-mashing' has a logic to it, because when the video shows the keys on some of the freer bits, he's clearly not just playing random notes.

hey! is that a ring on his finger? he must've married young.

  • No even still, you can just tell there's like a logic to his improv..

  • To the untrained ear it sounds like he's just mashing the keys. But to the trained ear, this is like watching god.

  • wow

  • what kind of "trained ear" does it take to appreciate this godlike power? acid, mushrooms, or just some strong weed? cause i honestly can't imagine a sober person leaving this in the CD changer

  • Well if you require drugs to enjoy art, then let me be the first to say your "taste" is probably non-existent. Sorry to have disappointed you, junkie. :)

  • nope...no drugs or alcohol for the last 19 years. i just don't know if it's possible to "get" this art without them

  • But if you insist, try acid... If you don't get it then, then you're just a moron, and drugs won't help. Sorry.

  • your imagination is sadly lacking

  • @ajdicks you its very easy, some1 like you would be listening to something very easy going to understand and would be reading goosebumps while some1 else would be enjoying this and would be reading Tolkien..its called thinking outside the box..

  • @surrealillness I enjoy McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, Vince Guaraldi. Keith has a lot of knowledge. He just seems to try too hard to be different at the expense of good taste. i just feel that Keith is by far the least inspiring keyboardist Miles ever hired

  • @ajdicks I don't understand how anyone could prefer Monk to Keith Jarrett. Maybe I would believe it if you said Tatum, Tristano, or Bud Powell.

  • Music (1967)

  • Damn- how old was he in 1967?? In his 20's?!?!?!

    That's not even funny.

  • some kind of epileptic disorder

  • perhaps; some of the ancients believed epilepsy was visitation/communication with the gods.

is that the kind you had in mind?

  • Love this rare footage. Thanks!

  • lol 1:40 is genious

  • I understand everything he is doing, I am a piano player and this is done because you are the notes you play so you become the rythm. Anita baker, Patti labelle and others do the same thing.

  • freakin genious

I bet he is on psychedelics here!

  • Agreed! Looking at the way he moves it looks VERY MUCH like someone on acid. Anyone who has done/does it will see this.

  • great video.. some people have criticized keith's onstage gyrations while performing, but i have no problem with it. i write computer programs for a living and sometimes when i am at work at my keyboard creating an important program, i look similar to keith when he is performing..

  • This is a higher state of mind effect. I know it very well from my piano playing too.

  • @haduroboros I have no problem with the movements, it's when he moans, if for no other reason that it hinders the audio of his beautiful playing.

  • I did similar thing while playing trumpet. Kind of Miles Davis-like.

  • Sure i agree with you, sometimes when dining, if I am cutting an incredibly tough piece of meat and have a similar movement myself.

  • hehe ,yes it is within all of us!

  • @zwartepiet412 I'd love to see someone doing this at a keyboard...

  • @zwartepiet412 Exactly, it's just a reaction to being on a kinetic conscious roll. I get just like this when I'm writing prose (another reason to do it in solitude).

  • awesome, thanks for sharing!

  • fuckin awesome

  • it sounds so strange. but not for the performance. just for the acoustic result.

    keith is awesome. as always.

  • phah u pathet

  • pretty awesome stuff

  • very very nice!

    why he lost it later?

    have heard this cologne concert...

    it was terrible

  • listen to his latest records "Radiance" and the "Carnegie Hall Concert" . That the most amazing stuff on p ever heard... nothing like cologne!

  • I love this early Jarrett stuff. His lines are just so killing. It's so bop influenced but something else entirely at the same time.

  • agree. i'm not a bop fan per se, but he can pull it off, then within less that a minute be into boogie, standards jazz with mindblowing changes, or almost-bach or modern classical.

lots of ground to cover, and i'm sure i know no one who covers it nearly so well.

  • Keith is something else. He's been doing his "act" for a long time...I love it!

  • Thanks. Not many vids available of Keith of this era. I appreciate it.

  • Lol... Not the best of Keith... A product of the 60's... What i did with Miles after was worse... I was so better in piano solo, in Facing especially...

  • I'll have what he's having....Yeah, I was one of the ones they didn't show in this video...LOL

  • I have seen the calm and the bizarre of Mr Keith Jarrett. He is entertaining to watch no matter what he is doing. As a musician I know we are constantly evolving and stretching. Perhaps this is one of those periods in which he was experimenting with a new style. The greats throughout history have always been a step ahead. What matters is whether you get him or not the man is a musical genius. Be thankful.

  • I haven't seen Keith Jarrett before. I love this! He is certainly interesting to watch!

  • how much of his music have you heard?

  • until the re-becomming

  • Thanks for posting this.Jarret is a

"dionysian", not exactly what I´d call an "apollonian" artist. He´s probably my favourite pianist, although he has an overly-dramatic way to express himself. I think his purpose is the search of beauty, every time he plays.

  • obviously should be a sort of free jazz?! big show, poor quality. i heard him playing bach prel and fugue and it was amazing! but this video is redicioulous, however - today keith is an extraordinairy artist.

  • If you watch this video without the sound,

You will see the man who struggle with the piano eats his fingers...

  • dude, you're psychedelic.

  • How nice to hear you playing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jefazo

  • I went to one concert of his in Ohio in the late 70's..He was more subdued that night.:(

I feel like I just now heard and seen what all the fuss was about! This is so great! Thanks for posting this..I'm blown away!

  • darkhurd thanks for sending me the video.

    this video is amazing

  • Jarrett's my favorite pianist right now. DeJohnette my favorite drummer. I'm still fairly green to jazz but to my ears he sounds like a genius.

  • wtf is wrong with this guy???

kiddin i wish i had these problems

    :)

  • Tal vez el más grande improvisador de todos los tiempos...

  • The greatest musician alive. As awesome at 22 as he still is today.

  • He hasn't improved in 40 years?

  • Music is music. Either it's great or not. Improving has nothing to do with creating. If technique and speed is how you judge music, why not get into sports instead.

  • He is mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he's gotta be tripping on acid right there

  • he was trippin' on music. his fingers were working too good for it to be acid.

  • very valid point

  • thank you. acid has enhanced my point-making abilities. I am to thinking Keith Jarrett is to pianism. but Jack DeJohnette won't take my calls.

  • Awesome.
