  • Attractive cleavage !

  • Dracapelly - You only have a handful of guitar videos posted, but you're one of my favorite YouTube guitarists. Love to hear your version of Si Bheag Si Mhor!

  • WOW!!!! It just goes to show that you don't need fancy expensive equipment to show case real talent which you have in abundance.

  • I play this on chromatic harmonica and to have such a well played guitar accompaniment would be fantastic.

  • You go girl!

  • Absolutely elegant; thank you!

  • This was great!

  • Amazing! You no doubt have true natural talent.

  • You are very gifted . . you should do this for a living, if your not already . .

  • simply outstanding

  • Absolutely beautiful! I have learned a few O'Carolan tunes in the past, but had never heard this one. Your playing prompted me to figure out a version for the banjo. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Can't believe I'd only just found this. This is wonderful playing - and it shows how the quality of playing is mostly about the player, not the instrument! You are fantastic!

  • Fabulously played!

  • i have 2 lovely acoustic guitars i now realise i cant really play.i think they are destined for ebay.a beautiful, wonderfully talented player.the Gods smile on you indeed ms marshall.an awful pity you are not left handed;you could be the proud owner or my taylor and my rosewood vintage!!

  • Excellent rendition. Even more amazing that you are self taught. I play this one on violin and I find that I have to play it at least once a week or I run into trouble if I don't.

  • O.O

  • Brilliant - super fast fingers! I'm chucking away my guitar and going off down the charity shop! (Thanks for the recommendation for Morone's book - I wonder if you've done Blind Mary?)

  • I have heard this song played by John Renbourn who is a true master of guitar. You ought to listen to him if you haven't already.

  • Wow, I LOVE you! I really think you should record this as a full version in a studio, 'cause I'm sure a lot of people would want to listen to you! :-)

  • Ah lovely!

  • Beautiful...and so are you

  • My wife and I play this on harp and flute so we appreciate this

    Especially the second part

    Not easy

  • You have so few videos on YouTube that these gems turn into pure nuggets of gold. But you won't get a full price for them as they are priceless, full of tone, colour and joy! Thank you for your wonderful playing!

  • Wow!!!

  • go raibh maith agat, ceol álainn

    Thanks for sharing :D

  • my god. You absolutely put me to shame on the guitar. I should quit playing after seeing your incredible technique. How long have you been playing for? This is beautiful and what a beautiful girl to play such a tune.

  • i love you

  • Absolutely stunning - Thank you so much, you have brightened my day. Are you playing this in standard tuning? Did you learn it by ear or is there a tab somewhere you can point me at?

  • @jireejoo Thank you! This is in DADGAD, and the arrangement is the work of guitar maestro, Franco Morone. The tab is available in his book, 'The South Wind'. He has a CD by the same name, which I can't recommend highly enough. Hope that helps.

  • Excellent stuff, I only play some Irish folk but would love to be able to play like this

  • golly...I gotta say that's an incredible level of mastery for such a difficult instrument - *especially* for someone who's self-taught :)

you're obviously gifted, for normally it's impossible to learn to play this kinda instrument that well on one's own

  • @schwarzfalk I respectfully disagree. Unless..there are a LOT of gifted musicians out there.

  • She is indeed a beautiful as what she plays. Very impressive :)

  • Great piece, was relaxing to listen to. I learnt to play classical guitar as a kid but have forgotten, and it seems there is a shortage of good local teachers nowadays! How did you start teaching yourself???

  • @jozzo6 Thanks, glad you liked it. I never learnt classical guitar from a classical perspective. I only read tab, for instance, and I don't adopt all the correct techniques. I taught myself guitar from the many guitar magazines available in the shops, the ones that have the accompanying CD's.

  • @Dracapalley Right now my guitar is tuned to normal C standerd tuning..This seems almost easy to play in Emajor? Maybe not thats why it is tuned to DADGAD with capo? And it sounds great,'' Your last chord looks like a the Dminor shape (first finger 3rd fret D string?) instead of a Dmajor? Guess im not seeing right.''

  • @Dracapalley I did that too

  • Talented...and hot.

  • man beautiful and can play guitar never thought id see it this girl has it all

  • I first saw this video over a year ago and I must say, having viewed it from time to time, it is the best version I have heard , even if it isn't a top notch guitar you are playing still, your execution of this piece is flawless and moving. My first guitar cost $25 and, after 37 years of playing I wish I had it just as a reminder of how I got started.

Good luck for the New Year and may you always play your heart and soul! :)

  • £10 very well spent! An inspiring performance. Thank you for the Post.

    [Tyneside, England.]

  • I really enjoy O'Carolan ... and this is one of the nicest renditions of the Concerto I've heard. Thank you. Thank you.

  • deadly lil tune...i play afew of his tunes too...good job on dat 1 dra

  • WOW!! A friend and I ran across this recording yesterday when we were researching O'Carolyn tunes to learn on mandolin. We were blown away by the beauty both of the piece and your playing of it. Are you performing in public? An interest in coming to Vermont for a performance? If so, we would love to try to help you find a booking. Thanks for the beautiful music, Helen!

  • @bookersdad1 Thank you! I've sent a message to your inbox.

  • awesome................................

  • awesome................................

  • marry me.

  • Very nice ! Great job ! Thanks ...

  • I've always admired O'Carolan. You've done a wonderful job of this. Have you any more of his stuff online?

    Thanks so much - J

  • i like it

  • Amazing:)

  • You a great guitar player, no doubts! Beautiful music!!

  • oh joy, an absolutely lovely rendition. bellisima!

  • Very nice and absorbing performance - if you are self taught then I admire your skill even more!

    Mike

  • Wow. What beautiful playing!

  • Excellent performance.!!!! consummate execution.

  • ur a doll ....you did so fine sweety ...love ya ....george

  • Magnificent! Zwalrus1 obviously doesn't know the first and only rule of guitar playing, which is: THERE ARE NO RULES. This is what I always tell my guitar students. I am self-taught too, and therefore have a special affection for musicians like us. Your playing is beautiful. There is no such thing as "technically correct."

  • Excellent performance of a Carolan piece!

  • nice to hear this on a guitar! You play it very well....

and you look very beautiful too X

  • nice:)

  • my God, 440 stars..can I buy some¿! :-D

  • Absolutely brilliant playing ! Just shows that it's not the tools but the work(wo)man that makes the difference. I've uploaded a few trad Irish and Scottish tunes myself, but this one is something special. Loved it. 5 stars and a sub from me :o) Thanks for posting. Cheers, Jim

  • Hi, did you ever get round to learning "Mrs Edwards"?

  • Molto bello,complimenti!

  • Beautiful. And, beautiful.....

  • Very well done, that's all I can say for the moment. Best of luck!!

  • Oops, So is Carolan's Concerto!

  • I love your playing! It really is inspiring, Thank you for sharing your music, the way you play Hewlett is rather magical. I am curious, have you ever checked out Segovia's scales?

  • I have been playing guitar seriously now for over 30 years-and this absolutely floors me!!! You have made a new fan, Turlough!!!

  • Wow, I would almost give you my guitar just so it could sound like that for one lifetime. I'm still hoping to make it sound like that in mine.

  • Really enjoyed this, thank you for posting it. Where are you based? Id love to see you play in public if that was something you do. Keep it up, its graceful and very inspiring.

  • so cool !

  • Very Nice

  • Great hands...and I think the self-taught as opposed to classically trained is a bust anyway...training with a good teacher can be helpful but a lot of classically trained players I hear tend to sound "stiff" because of it...

I usually only favourite original songs but I'm making an exception for this...

    5/5* Fav

  • i like your comment '..., the guitar was a tenner from the charity shop.'

  • Excellant, and so effortlessly done, bravo!

  • i would bang her SO hard. beautiful and good at the guitar. schwing.

  • Dear Helen

For what it's worth...I now have a youtube account just so I could say...I LOVE YOU!! O'Carolan's is one of my favorite tunes, and I can't say I've ever witnessed a better version than you put on. Thanks you so much.

  • Don't know how many times I listened to you pieces...they are GREAT...hope you put a few more up...well worth paying for actually...

  • beautiful!

  • loved this really well played

  • who cares what fingerings are used? sound is the most important thing, and this sounds good

  • beautiful. well done.

  • whoaooow magnifique !

  • Really musical. Superb.

  • One amazing young lady, just love your music more please x

  • This was nicely done. I played classical guitar for many years and have been through the drill. You have a great musical soul. Stay with it. The right hand issues are minor. You obviously have the talent and passion to play very well. We just tend to focus on one hand or the other. In time they both come of age.

  • A bad craftsmen always blame his tools but a good craftswomen can even make a tenner guitar sing sweetly.

  • Un seul mot : SUPER !!!

    Patrick

  • Brilliant. Never heard this before - a beauty.

  • Just seems to get better every time i listen to it. The feel you have, for the music, goes way beyond technical correctness, pure class.

  • Beautifully played, and on a junk guitar too!

After hearing that you might as well have mine.

  • Beautiful, and on a junk guitar too!.

After hearing that you might as well have mine..

  • Why do you repeat the same fingers in the right hand instead of exchanging them? So strange.

  • @zwalrus1 I guess that's one of the cons of being self-taught... I figured out a way to play that was comfortable for me but not technically correct.

  • @Dracapalley Right, well good technicality really just makes things easier. For instance, in the right hand, you'll repeat the a (ring finger) or m (the middle) a few times in a row. It's so much easier to exchange between fingers so that no finger plays a single string twice in a row. It makes playing with speed much easier. Anyway, whatever is comfortable for you.

Kudos on Pure Imagination. I've been planning on doing an arrangement of that myself.

  • @zwalrus1 "For instance, in the right hand, you'll repeat the a (ring finger) or m (the middle) a few times in a row. It's so much easier to exchange between fingers so that no finger plays a single string twice in a row."

She played it exactly the way anyone with common sense would. Why on earth would anyone play the same string with alternate fingers unless they were double-picking (which she wasn't)? You might want to consider paying attention.

  • @sthugh I'm with walrus 1 on this, and I understand the temptation to hit the same string with the same finger. The result, however, is a choppy attack, and there's also an upper limit to how fast you can hit the same string with the same finger. This isn't to take anything away from her skill and considerable achievement. But you have to figure she posted her work for both acknowledgement and for helpful ideas.

  • @dagrote But it's supposed to be played repeatedly with one finger. It's called staccato. That's what the piece calls for. As I said, if the music doesn't call for double-picking, it would be pointless to use alternate fingers, and I don't believe you'll ever find another video on YT of anyone playing the piece that way. It's not very helpful to suggest she should play it incorrectly.

  • @sthugh Fair enough. If she's deliberately choosing that technique over the other for the effect, that's fine, though I'm not sure that the piece calls for it, or that it would be "incorrect" to play it another way. But if she's playing that way because she lacks the other technique, then would you admit that it's worthwhile to learn it? More skills, more options. That's all.

  • @dagrote I don't know if she can double-pick or not. I haven't seen enough of her videos to say. Yes, it's quite worth learning. I have a recent video showing a little about double-picking, although I do it with a thumbpick or plectrum. I've never tried to get the hang of using alternate fingers to do it since I'm not really a classical or flamenco player myself. But if I was strictly a classical/flamenco player, I would certainly practice doing it with the fingers instead.

  • @sth : That's a great technique, too, though it sounds like it commits your thumb to it, and that might force you to leave the drone unattended. In general, my policy is learning a new tune is the chance to learn a new technique. I worked on a tune once for years, and it never came out right. Then I figured it out. It meant I had to learn how to pass my middle finger underneath my index for the final note in a run. It took weeks. But now that I have that in my right hand, I use it all the time.

  • @dagrote I learned long ago that there are some things I'm simply never going to be able to do because I don't have the time or because I'm physically not able. There are chords my fingers just aren't long enough to play cleanly for instance. I get by the best I can for not being a full-time player. I wish I would have had all these instructional videos available when I was just starting. Kids learn so darn fast today. I see 12-year olds doing things I couldn't do till I was 20.

  • @sthugh I know exactly what you mean. I don't know how old you are, but when I was learning a tune, it meant lifting the needle off a record and putting back at the same place a thousand times. And God help us if it was in an alternate tuning. These days, with CDs, slowing technologies, tabs, and instructional videos these kids can fly through new pieces.

  • @Dracapalley dont take any notice of zwalrus helen, just ask him to post his version. i dont think he could when i looked at his channel whos strange.

i think you play it beutifully and if you had a guitar and p a system like franco marone

there wouldnt be much diferenceand we all have something to give to music. canyou try ocaralons draught then i can learn it from you, icant make it sound right. cheers allan

  • @Dracapalley pretty good for being self taught I'd say. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • Magnificent! There is nothing "strange" about your fingering, and there are no cons to being self taught . The first and only rule of guitar playing is: THERE ARE NO RULES. This is what I always tell my guitar students. I am self-taught too, and therefore have a special affection for musicians like you. Your playing is beautiful. There is no such thing as "technically correct."

  • @cwimpee well said and wise ,self taught carries a unique gift all on it's own.

  • @cwimpee TOTALLY agree with you. I do wish that some people are only watching in order to criticise or make people feel insecure. Sometimes not knowing what is "right" or "wrong" is an advantage. One of my friends is a fantastic self taught, play by ear jazz accordionist - he does things on the keyboard that seem impossible, but because he does not know any boundaries he triumphs over someone like me who was classically taught to play only what is written, and fumbles in despair :(

  • @zwalrus1 Thats probably her own style,

  • @louie10ish Ultimately, whatever works but technically it's incorrect. But it doesn't seem to hold her back. She plays well.

  • @zwalrus1 Never mind. That' s the way lute players play. "If it sounds right, it is right!"

  • lovely playing!

  • @Dracapalley: i have received Maestro's Celtic Book/CD and have now memorized this Beautiful music, i still polishing it to PERFECTION, I am use to the DADGAD tuning now...hehehe... Thank You for your 'tips', you had replied on my inquiry about learning / memorizing this piece in a short time... Thank You Again, along with Maestro Franco Morone for the INSPIRATION,
