I've flown in Chinooks a couple times and I don't like big choppers. They're too damn loud, and you can sense that if they lose much power they will drop like a lead balloon and everyone dies in a giant fireball.

A little chopper I was in lost an engine but the pilot roll-landed it easily. With a big chopper it would have been much worse.

@Goldrag Your right about the approximately 13 ton lift limit of the Chinook at sea level with standard pressure and a low density altitude. However Afghanistan, is really dry and hot and consistently has an amazingly high density altitude. High DA means less helicopter performance. Mi-26 is bigger and can lift more. The power to weight ratio is much better in a Chinook though. As far as being tactical... an Mi-26 better be heavily escorted. Any insurgent can hit that thing with an RPG from far

There's the Mi-12 homer and the Yak-60. Tandem rotors though.

Single rotor, the Hughes Tip jet skycrane body is smaller than the Mi-26, but the blades reach out way further.

The Mi-26 is not the biggest by any means. It's a great cargo transporter, i've seen it lose it at lifting jobs before though.
