I'm so desparate to get in the skies I think I"m going to use duct tape, trash bags, and bamboo sticks to make a homemade glider! I can't afford those fancy smanshy gliders. Also, there's a great ,1000 Ft cliff just down the road from where I live to test it out on! :D if anything goes wrong well... there's the beach down below i'll just have to crash in the water which will cushion the impact. :)

I always laugh when ppl tell me its too dangerous to ride a motorcycle but yet the next second they go get into their car and drive knowing that hundreds of thousands of ppl die in car accidents each year. It's all a matter of risk tolerance and life. Someone could do the most dangerous things you can think of but die from choking on food. When its your time its your time, live life to the fullest I say.
@cochranexyz were talking about flying though and not being on the ground. you can't compare flying sports to beign on the ground. flying has a whole other element of risk
@jvcmail Chances are it was a stall. In 1983, I was learning on an easy ridge in light lift about 150' feet up, flying prone for the first time. I allowed the gliders nose to get too high and lost air speed. The result was the glider gently turned straight into the wind. When this happens you loose the ability to steer the the glider often (as in my case) turns directly into the hill. Luckly I recognized the stall and pulled in for speed then turned the glider. Fly fast, fly safe.

I myself have flown Pack Saddle Mt. for many years, I also have been an instructor,It's horrible when this happen. It kinda makes us instructors feel we ain't doing our job, but I'm not flying the glider, he is. Sounds like he was in light lift and pushing out on the base tube to stay aloft, then stalled and spun in. Hang Gliding is as safe as YOU make it. Please listen to your instructor, and don't get the SuperMan syndrome.
WOW! So young at 26. I almost died @ 23 from a car striking me as a pedestrian pushing a truck off the road. 14 surgeries later I still have my legs but now a new battle w/hep C and Cirrhosis because of the blood transfusions. I'm still thankful very much for my extended life.
Dude, I have have hep C and have had a liver transplant about 4/12 years ago. i still hang glide and do everything I always did. There is life ahead, don't give up, and don't waste it.
i had a friend who was such an idiot he died while crossing the street. I warned him not to cross the street ever and now look he is dead. Death happens i wish mine would be doing something i loved instead of the usual cancer,heart attack, car wreck or in an old folks home because i became such a burden to my kids that they dont want to deal with me anymore. Keep on flying everyone.

This was in the incedent reports in USHPA mag. There were slight crosswinds and seconds afer he launched, he turned left 180. when he saw he was going to crash into pack, he tried to turn left and pull up....he stalled and fell "50-70 feet" into the trees below. I am brand new at the sport and have been to pack many times as a child when my dad flew there. Reminder to all pilots the dangers of flying................................. -J Degtoff
@smrndoff yes that is right, but you need sufficient speed to turn (fly them a the stall speed and they get ver ydifficult to turn), to gain hwight by pushing the bar our, you need a lot of excess speed to convert into height (especially on a low performance glider like he was flying) - I do not know how he crashed in a turn, but he might have flown straight into the hill or satlled and dropped like a stone.
Sad, hang gliders are pretty safe as it goes, but all aviation bites.

Sounds like this guy had enough experience, I kind of doubt beginners instinct as a primary cause. Still I've seen dozens of tree landings and never a fatality. Extremely unlucky case here.
How many launch-&-landings did he have from a small training hill? The reaction to pull in should be instinctive by the time a student is going up to a 400 ft mountain.

He didn't spin-in.
It seems he stalled after pushing out as a reaction to heading downwind towards the ridge, and dived into the terrain. Remember: speed is safety.
