  • was marvin astral traveling??? i dig.

  • Musical Genius

  • I wonder what modern-day music would sound like if artists had continued to make this level of music. We can only wonder...

  • I think this was hi BEST!!!!!!!!!

  • God, I love this man and his manner of conveying his struggles so poetically

  • Three dislikes? I feel those three folks are probably anti drug fools, who completely miss the point when it comes to this song. Drugs are OK,but when they are used in a way to relieve your being from all the pain in your world then they are definitely not. That's what he's trying to say. x x x love Marvin R.I.P.

  • I got this album and I want you...will listen and pass on to my kids and grand kids

  • i HAD THE PLEASURE OF COMING UP WITH MARVIN GAYE AND HIS MUSIC AND i STILL MANAGE TO LET MYSELF FALL FOR THE DRUG WORLD AND i M STILL THINKING THAT i CAN BEAT THIS ADDICTION YES STUPID MY HEAD FROM KENNY B.

  • ...flutter, (as an eagle over her nest) upon our faces, then God shall speak. Come up here! And the evening and the morning will be the last day...of sin death & the premeditation & art of war. The darkness that will cover the face of the damned is MURDER: wars, rapes, rumors, propaganda. Sorceries: pharmicuticals, drugs, cult-worship, FORNICATION: homosexual mariages, rapes, feminism, and THEFT: man-stealers, natural resource stealers "Free-Trade confederates".

  • ...& just think, our own government asigned this narcotics infultration into our borders, for the building of their " New World Order", which is the ultimate;"STUPID MIND GAME". Keep your mind. Flee to Christ Jesus, & stand in faith of Him. The condition of being "without form and void," is here & is about to unleash much vile. "New World Order" will be without form and void, & its darkness will cover "the face of the deep." Be sure it covers not your face. May the Spirit of God...

  • Im a 80's baby but ive got to say man, seems like 70's was the era of coolness and when music was just real coming from the soul and heart man. way different from what you hear now. music is a feeling man and this feels good to listen to.

  • i lived thru the herion scruage in the bronx ---lost alot of good friends----this song says alot about how it went down

  • LISTEN

  • Marvin Gaye is truly a LEGEND..no one can ever take that away from him

  • THIS SONG WAS 30YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME IN 1971,JUST BRILLIANT !!!!!!

  • Marvin Gaye is a lengend who speaks and sing for love he found in all of us, such a beatiful song if only you can feel his reach. Marvin is love and trully missed!!!!

  • 3 people don't understand true emotion. Probably Justin Bieber fans.

  • @Marol your right some people don't have any feelings or emotions and they are usually white. no bullshit

  • Legndary song, Legendary Soul Singer.

Man, I really Miss Marvin, i got the disgrace to born one year after his death... I would love to listen him on live.

  • THIS IS SOUL.

  • 0:01

  • wont eva b a notha i swear

  • This song is... .... ... I cant even find the words. Mos Def even did a great job with this song

  • i miss this man so much, we need a figure in this world

  • J'ai atterris ici en cliquant sur une signature de JVC ... :noel:

  • I love this song....this entire album raised the bar for ALL American music....it told the world that music wasnt just for entertainment but it can also be a performer's voice or platform to speak out or make a commentary on issues....it was the most important body of work that Motown released and propelled Marvin Gaye to musical genius level. His stand/position on the war is heard in such a gifted and talented way...

  • The spike in heroin addiction was tied to soldier coming back from Vietnam. Even though a lot of blacks were affected because of higher enrollment in the Army, many other communities were affected too. You can't just blame all white people for the poor response of the government. This is coming from a black person. Yes, there is an unfair advantage tied with being white, which has held back other races to this day, but it doesn't mean that all white people are evil and to assume so is racist.

  • i wish white people never sent that heroin shit into the community.

  • BLV

  • merci marvin tony

  • Marvin Gaye was a genius and this album typifies his truly immense talent. This is a towering example of musical expression, not to mention a profound insight into the depths of the human soul.

  • ........"but I go crazy when I can't find it"........

been there....done that. Whoa......mercy mercy me.

Marvin being real.........speaking from the soul.

THIS ALBUM BELONGS TO THE AGES........GENIUS & TIMELESS.

Brilliant lyrics, grooves, vocals and music arrangements right here ya all.

    Thank you rovingeye2 for this.

  • Two Words... MIND RELAXER

  • THIS IS A JUNKIES SONG !

  • THIS SONG SAVE MY LIFE.... I WAS ABLE WALK AWAY FROM THE DANGER.... THE PAIN STOP....

  • Track #4 from perhaps the GREATEST album in the history of recorded music. Mellow, but painfully sad song. This baseline is of the chain!!

  • this is one of the strongest songs he eva wrote. listen to the pain ooooooo..... gon on boy miss u marvin pimpin gaye

  • THIS I A GREAT SONG....

  • James Jamerson, nuff said.

  • DAMN!!!

  • Marvin em um momento que parece um ritual religioso !

Fantástico - apenas ele conseguia este ambiente que unia religião, ecologia, crianças e acima de tudo - o ser humano !!!

    Salve Marvin !!!

    Ivan Bocalon

  • Definition of ageless "soul" This cat's music is beyond description!

  • R.I.P Brotha Marvin,He said it best,It's bound to forsake em,and sadly enough it did,Damn the good die to fukin young!!! "Make Me Wanna Holla"!!!

  • Talking about livin'.

  • I go to a place where danger awaits me and its bound to forsake me!!!!

  • the song in a haunting mirror of not only drugs addiction but any addictive or destructive habit / lifestyle.

  • I swear this song was in that film Four brothers at the end someone holla bak at me

  • @Riannc the song ur talking about is off the "Trouble Man" soundtrack by Marvin Gaye. the track is named "Cleo's Apartment". I absolutely love Marvin Gaye.

  • He explains the drug. Thats why u say no to drugs! Its very strong and addictive. Never tried it and never will!

  • For anyone who has fought with the horribile hell of the diease of addiction.

  • Timeless! This album resonates today after more than 30 years.

  • Very touching and soulful about Marvin´s own personal suffering. Especially the words "I goe to the place where danger awaits me, and is bound to forsake me" are describing painful addiction. "I go to the place where good feelings awaits me, self-destruction´s in my hand". Though I never troied drugs I can very much relate to this struggle. The desperate search for the real self and the real world - the real thing, no lies, games, abuse, just reality, and love.

  • WONDERFUL! wHAT A BEAUTIFUL,TALENT. I MISS YOU , MARVIN.

  • he just so perfect thats y he turned to drugs!

smoke the green but never understood y ppl go beyond that

  • wow...wow...wow....! one of the best albums, of all times! nice post thank you!

  • used to listen to this all night at the age of 15 hooked on heroin in 1971 caught up in that epidemic on the east coast new york harlem 116 sreet 8th ave asbury park nj springwood ave green tape thank god for farrakhan

  • I truly love Marvin Gaye. He is my favorite artist. He inspired me in my own songwriting,

  • Classic tune as well as the entire album. I was in high school when the album "What's Going On" was released. As I understand it was inspired by his brother who was deployed in Vietnam. Berry Gordy didn't want to release it because of the controversial content but Marvin persisted and the rest is history. What a powerful song, man and album. May we all receive the real message by walking a righteous life and working together to make this a better world. Things has actually gotten worse.

  • This is one of those one and only songs that you ever will here. It goes so deep expressing pain and disappointment; but he find peace in something that gives him temporary pain relief; but it slowly become the ultimate enemy.

  • @MrBangal1 theres more than one, one and only songs? a;lgj;alejglkewjh

  • Hey wasnt there like a faster version of this song as well? I remeber heraing as song saying the same thing but it went alittle faster. Do you know what im talking about?

  • Man this song speaks!

  • wow this song is very deep. that goes to show he was a powerful man with his music to make you zone off this tune we all agree?

  • wwhhooo! love this track also Minnesta's flipped version "Modern Marvel" &! along with DJ Cozmos's flipped version "I'm A Star (DJ Cozmos Remix)"

  • There are few that are true geniuses in this world. This beautiful brother was one of them, may he rest eternally at peace. We were blessed to have him when we did...

  • I love this song it is deep and meaningful, but also sad when you hear him singing about addiction to drugs and how powerful that addiction can be. I think he had a lot of courage for being so outspoken and vocal about a subject that some people would rather sweep under the rug. RIP Marvin I wish you could have battled those demon and won.

  • That killer bass guitar says it all. No stronger song about drug addiction that I have heard from any artist.

  • Absolutely AHEAD OF HIS TIME. My father succumbed to drug abuse and was a very educated man. When I hear this song, I often think of him.

  • damn i just listen to this song and i just fall to sleep (not in a bad way) but i just sit back relax and just ... relax! = ) great song rest in peace marvin gaye ! p.s - this is better than listening to that fake hip-hop these days !

  • A song like this comes from living, and experiencing the lows that life has to offer. As he sings, you can feel the darkness that is eating away at him. Sad, depressing song, but it is kinda ironic that I like it so much:|

  • I think it is his long time friend James Jamerson playing that killa bass guitar. Without it, the song wouldn't thump as hard. The Royal One James Jamerson wound up smoking and drinking himself to death after being thrown under the rug by Motown when they packed up and went to LA.

  • @palmares77 You're right about that bass. Without it, this song wouldn't be half of what it is. And, thanks for the info.

  • The true beauty in the music means he lived and witnessed the highs and the lows , one love uncle Marvin.

  • Such an incredibly touching song. Marvin Gaye truly put his heart and soul into his music. Many artists claim they do but it rarely are they able to put it across with such honesty and openess.

  • Man before and after his time````

  • @peacejk

    yes he was.

  • I love this song I feel closer too GOD when I hear it.

  • For all you dope heads that are still flying high. This song was dedicated to the brothers out there in Nam in the late 60's and 70's that got hooked on herion, to numb the pain from their traumatic experience from the war. Peace..

  • @MsKar1 Peace....

  • @BeyondbodyAndSoul: I'm glad you understand what I was trying to say, to those who thinks this song is about getting high for recreation. This is sad. Marvin Gaye was a sad soul... He had his struggles himself with drugs..he express that in his music, His joy, pain and his political views. Marvin Gaye is one of the best R&B artist that ever lived. A true Legend..R.I.P Marvin Gaye Luv U 4 life...

  • @MsKar1

this is one of those songs where U have 2 listen 2 what Marvin was saying 2 really understand.

U don't find 2 many R&B artists these days who take the time 2 drop jewels in their music.

  • @Dre7Guevara, I'm glad you are listening to the soul. and not just the musical instruments. This is a story, of "Marvins" life. You are right about todays' artist. They are watered down with instruments, and their is no "soul". Some of those who are in the music industry are just one hit wonders or NO true gift or talent anointed by "God". Man made material. Someone else, has invented them, for their outter looks, but inside are the "living dead". Their are very few chosen. Like Marvin..R.I.P

  • oh, 4 sho!

I grew up off cats like Marvin & MJ so yeah, when it comes 2 music, I deals in the soul. IMO, Ghostface Killa is the Marvin Gaye of Hip Hop, because he brings that same soul with his music that reminds me of some old Marvin.

  • i feel u on that homie

  • True indeed.

  • I'm hooked my friend to the boy who make slaves out of men

  • Marvin Gaye is a legend. true lyrics in this song

  • Lighten the fk up and just listen to the song and save the speech please.

  • Omg, this song was for the future , he made something long time ago , he seen wat was happen in the futuer , that amazing how dis song go hard. listen to the words and think about verthing thats been going on in this world, TODAY , mm. i getting shivers to deep for me

  • Truly beautiful...I get shivers when I listen to this song!

  • @eddylovescricket agreed completely

  • esta musica es de verdad

  • Marvin is speaking through song expressing his addiction and how it kills man and helps escape the soul. So stupid minded but we go crazy when we cant find it. I also go through the same troubles and know for sure what hes talking about. Beautiful song i used to listen to it non stop in iraq and what do you know it speaks to me directly now more then ever!

  • I hope you are getting better.

    Agape & Peace

  • finally a song that makes some good sense to me

  • great artist

  • marvin is superb.

  • he is singing about his own drug addiction.and the dangers of it.

  • marvin is singing a bout drug addiction.

  • i love this song and/but i don't know what he's talking about? can someone translate for me? thanks. much love marvin gaye, beautiful music!

  • Whats the best way to explain this song.

He is singing and crying at the same time. He saying" Take my hand and tell me you understand; but no one does.

So I fly high in the sky to cope with the pain. Right now it is the only thing that does understand me; but as much it can save me it also can kill me. Until then I continue to cry out to you until my soul is healed; but please arrive soon because I'm fading away so fast."

  • wow thanks, thats deep

  • he's talkin about heroin addiction.."i'm hooked my friends,on the BOY who made slaves out of men"

    boy=heroin

  • ohh i see that makes sense

  • Christ i dont know how many times i listend to this song after my father died..verry sad..emotional..one of the most powerfull songs ive ever heard.

  • my favorite song. i feel this nigga right here

  • a Haunting Classic of Mr. Marvin Pentz Gaye....a true hallmark on this album.

i love and miss him and it's hard to not feel his hurt and pain when this song is heard. The Brother was just deep....

  • Damned well said. Tim-Detroit

  • @sagittariusrising74 yes he was. he got through so many hard nights. Damn he was an incredible artist

  • @sagittariusrising74 Well said

  • @toicannon thank you. (*:

  • RIP Babaa

  • this is the chillest album ever it kinda hypnotizes u especially if u puff a L

  • [.THE BEST.]

  • Story of my out of control life...on youtube.

  • My favorite song from the album. Makes me feel like I'm back in San Francisco and the Bay...

  • I'm on my way back to the Bay

  • This is my favorite song off the What's Going On" album...

  • u think this sounds good right now?? listen to it high as fuck, sippin on a drink, lounging....

  • yes!

  • LOL. The whole song is about being a drug addict, and u talking about listening 2 it high and drunk? U crazy 4 that one, papiruso34.

  • dawb86 Just goes to show some people will never learn drugs are just not cool death self-destruction is not cool or fun

  • I love this song AND I smoke a lot I am mature enough to separate the two. I relate to this song on personal reasons and I reach out to people but they don't understand so I stay in the clouds. Thats where those who understand me are..in heaven

  • What are you separating? I didn't understand. Are you saying that you chance brining harm to yourself because people don't understand you? No I don't understand, but I am trying to.

  • you missed the whole point of the song bruh!!!

  • Your right totaly missed the point...lol

  • Rarely do you hear an album where everything was just together almost perfectly...every instrument and every vocal was layered beautifully and it puts you in a trance you don't ever want to be out of, there are only a few albums that do it as well as Marvin Gaye did with this album. (Dark Side of the Moon and Pet Sounds come readily to mind)

  • i couldn't of said it better than that brother.

  • all three of which are concept albums.

  • I don't know if Pet Sounds really constitutes a "concept" album...Dark Side and What's Going On definitely do though.

  • I've actually never heard Pet Sounds so I dunno. Dark Side and Goin on are both amazing albums though. Although I do think both The Wall and The Final Cut surpass Dark Side.

  • sadly, I've never listened to Final Cut, but I have to disagree about The Wall...fantastic album, but I still prefer Dark Side.

Pet Sounds is also amazing, but yeah, I wouldn't consider it a concept album.

  • aw man, do whatever you can to listen to it. It's one of their best. An underrated classic of their catolouge, as is Obscured by Clouds.

  • incredibly beautiful and haunting ,a introspective of a gifted and sometimes tormented soul.

  • this is my all time favorite tune from marvin...and i don't get high...

but i feel everything he is saying...

"i go to the place where danger awaits me..."

i love everything about this song, his tone, the layers of harmony, the lyrics, the music itself...brilliant

  • damn, when will these racial overtones just go away? i've said it before and i'll say it again-----(THERE'S ONLY ONE RACE AND THAT'S THE ("HUMAN RACE")...............WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nubonyx, although I agree with you for the most part, there are facts that haven't been dealt with. Katrina vividly showed how black people in this country are viewed as second class citizens or refugees in their own country. They pay the salaries of those who denied them help.

Iran/Contra(cocaine), Urban economic genocide, Insurance and real estate redlining and on and on. How blacks are expected to thrive and compete is ridicules and unrealistic. That's what we need to awake from.

  • I agree with you 100% beloved. This is the sad truth and that is that many non critical thinking Caucasians know of or even pay attention to these facts. Mind you, this is not a racist statement but a true statement. Many do not want to know or know and cannot accept the truth. But, we are all one no matter what. White Americans are the sleeping giant that needs awakening. Once they are awake we can proceed to that next level of consciousness.

  • GOOD POINT.

  • song was co writen with yhat bitch anna money hungry ass long live marvin G.O.A.T

  • incredible, from the soul of a tormented and gifted genius.

  • this was a sound of perfection

  • This should play in the background when I'm walking in The Bronx. (Spike Lee type cinematography) ;-)

  • this is a result of what these white devils did to our last generation and this one. they got drugs comming in on boats , trains and planes and ships and we dont even own a god damn raft. now house niggies are participating in theif devilishment from a lack of knowledge of self and these dirty devils wanna say its everybody . we dont hate'em cause their white, nana didn't teach us that. it just so happens that their white and the greatest killers of the earth.

  • You've GOT to be kidding me. Ain't no man responsible for what ANOTHER man puts in his own mouth or his veins.

I may be a souless selfish cracker but at least I got that much insight!

  • i understand. BUT there are more white addicts (numerically speaking) Drugs are a poison that truly cross all lines. Also, we all descended from one couple, Adam and Eve.

  • play this when I die

  • I decided to finally listen to this historic album. It usually takes about three listens for an album to begin to stick and work its mojo into your brain gears, but this one stuck out the very first time. I love it.

  • that song is sampled in the also brillant "modern marvel" by mos def. check it out!

  • This is a beautiful and powerful song. It doesn't sound dated. The song, the album, and Marvin Gaye are all timeless & priceless.

  • Great song. Marvin's best IMO.
