This is his best song by far yet for some reason only made it to chart position 20 on the billboard charts in 1960. Wonder why? I have the stereo version which sounds much better . Thanks for posting!
Most people do not realize that Marv Johnson was, in reality, the first Motown artist. His records were produced by Berry Gordy and written by many of the people who became part of the Motown empire just a few years later.
A vocal difference in this the alternate take can be heard at around 1.57 where 'youve got to move two mountain make a river dry' the word 'river' is raised a notch in tone compared to the origial which is not - yea I know get a life as I clearly have far too much time on my hands :-) but I love how artists used to do this to their songs so sorry.
There are a number of vocal differences, however the easiest way to tell them apart is comparing the line which begins about 13 seconds into the song - On the hit version he sings "when you said our romance was through, I love you long, you done me wrong...."
On the EMI Legends CD version (the alternate take) he sings "when you said our romance was through, I love you long, BUT you done me wrong...."
I think the word "But" is used here so this would be the alternate stereo.
It is so good that this great music is available to be shared with today's generation. I have Marv Johnson's collections on 45's (remember those) and on cassette. Boy! I love this music.
Done some digging and this version is not the original but recorded around the same time. Seems lots of artists did alternate takes of their songs around that time e.g. Del Shannon with 2 takes of Hey little Girl and 2 takes of Runaway.......cant say why it was done. The original Marv record was release only in mono. Don't know if that clears anything up but I am a fan of the alternate take!
@SirBasildeBrush. I was not aware that "Move Two Mountains" was recorded with a different take. I have it on the original United Artists label and a re-release version and they both sound the same. However, there may be some subtle differences to a keen ear. Anyway, I just love Marv Johnson and it is good that there are others out there with such refined tastes, too.
In 1959 and 1960, this recording artist turned out one great sound after another. And on this one, and most of his others, he got excellent backup singing from The Rayber Voices.
Quite fabulous!!!
Thanks.

Damn I love that! I remember sitting on the floor in my Dad's room where he had his stereo and record player listening to that song about age 5 or 6!

hi sir bb do you think tis a rerecord or an alternant?
nomiclas 3 years ago
Only version I know - have you got a different version? Certainly sounds of the era, rather than a later re-record.
SirBasildeBrush 3 years ago
Believe that this recording was made slightly later on, post-1960...close to the original but slightly altered.

I stand corrected, thank you. I do believe that this is indeed the original. Thanx again.

Thanks for the digging. If that's the case, I'd guess this was the album cut.
