Hi, VleeMouse. Yeah, sad but true. The trouble is Pictures of home is quite unique in it's chord structure, a real rollercoaster. Gillan was perfect on the original, it was easy for him then. I would rather they didn't play it than do it like this. The shame is they never played it live in the old days, so no Made In Japan era versions. That would have been worth listening to !
Hi x24actor. Don't forget that when singers/bands change and they do new material, they write it to suit them NOW. So they wouldn't write Purple's 'Child in Time' or Gillan's 'Fighting Man' now because Ian can't hit those notes anymore, that's why CIT just has 2 screaming verses now. DP today are nostalgic legends, not direct competitors. If they were unknown before, they'd be unknown now. Genuine fame before got them fame now.
Hello Tom et al. Thanks for correction, the keyboardist is Don Airey, ex Rainbow - Graham Bonnet years. It can sometimes be difficult to own up to something, even if it stares you in the face if you don't want to hear it. I have no reason to put Ian Gillan down. I've loved him for decades, seen him many times, met him. He still has that distinct uniqueness. He has sometimes sacrificed the tune for audience participation, and he does some songs well, but he's not what he was, listen again.
His voice has diminished considerably, but it is still fantastic. He is also still SINGING whilst people like Mick Jagger have been talking their way through songs for decades.
Hi Sadeyes22. Yes it's Ian Gillan, my fav singer (with Ian Paice on drums, Jon Lord on keyboards, Roger Glover on bass - mark II so far, and Steve Morse on guitar). I was at this festival and have seen Ian in bands since the 1970s. He has deteriorated over the years - it's nature I'm afraid. His voice did improve during the concert but outdoors is often very hard to hear yourself. DP were well past their hayday I'm afraid.
what is the line up here? Is that Ian Gillan?? If so, his voice has deteriorated considerably...he had one of the most amazing rock opera voices -so much colour and power.
Blackmore's spirit is absent.....no Purple

The once greatest singer on earth destroying the finest song ever written. Embarrassing.

He sings it better now than what he did in the mid-90s. He never even used to attempt the ho-OOOOOOOOOMMME scream then.

Ian Gillan sounds better now than he did in the 70's. Listen to BANANAS and RAPTURE.

Don Airey is playing keyboards here. Ian's voice is fine.
