I currently have this new version of the film. But if memory serves me right, in the old version, Ilia-android does tells Decker (who appeared to be wondering how does V-Ger knows the Creator is on Earth) that "V-Ger has evidence wish supports this". I noticed something was missing in this new version in the takes where Decker was communicating w/ Ilia-android. Didin't thought removing those lines was wise. But then again, Decker didin't reacted: I want to see that evidence. The golden disc.
I watched the Director's Cut prior to the Theatrical Cut (I may have watched the TC when I was 4 in 1981 but obviously don't remember). I will admit that the added effects didn't seem out of place or not part of the original 1979 film. So great job there. Also a good job in re-editing the film to make it move faster. It's not the authentic experience, but since both versions are available, who can complain. Wish they would but the DC on blu-ray though. Still holding onto my DVD of it.
I hated the "Director's Cut" They cut the V'ger power field from a very creepy 82 AUs diameter to a 2 AUs. Thus the even added exterior shots V'ger vessel looks small. I'm glad the blu ray release had the far superior theatrical version.
@IMDRanged I get why they cut it from 82 to 2. Similar to Star Wars' parsec, an AU is an actual scientific measurement. In both cases, the terms are used as impressive sounding technobabble. Problem is that 82 AU is almost the size of our solar system. It's a little ridiculous to have a cloud and/or ship that's the size of the solar system settle over Earth.
@peterp21 True. But still back in the day with my elementary school astronomy, I first heard that in the theater and said "no way!" Despite that, my main complaint of the Director's Cut is that it did cut a few seconds from the Enterprise going through the cloud the and V'ger flyover thus even cutting a bit from Jerry Goldsmith's score. Very very noticeable. This is far worse an insult to Goldsmith than Ridley Scott did by replacing a bit of his Alien score with Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2.
@Xwingpilot yes. It also happens to be to first part of the ship you see in the movie once the Enterprise breaches the cloud. By the end of the V'ger flyover sequence the Enterprise is at the front of the ship. When V'ger locks a tractor beam onto the Enterprise, the ship is pulled in through the very front of the vessel about 1/4 of the way in.
In the theatrical release, they did a great job of making V'Ger look awe-inspiring. The enterprise takes a long journey through a complex cloud, then a close flyover of the ship - every inch of which was terrifying and fascinating. I got the impression that the ship was the size of a planet. In this shot of vger, the ship looks tiny compared to the earth. I was glad to see the whole thing, but felt it was kind of a let-down.
Isn't there yet another version of the ending, where a bit more happens between the V'ger explosion and the Enterprise flying slowly towards the camera? I could swear that I saw something like that when this was shown on TV a few years back.
Oh and I am positive it wasn't just the director's cut, I believe it was years before the director's cut was even released.
@Toobulations hmm, I have an old VHS version but it never shows any depiction of V'ger not even in the final scene so I don't know about any other versions. Just the '79 and '99. I remember something like that happening on Star Trek 2 when they go more in depth about Scotty's nephew who died in the movie.
I think they should have kept it 82 au s in diameter(as it was in its cloud state) and shown a view of it in earth orbit with the earth a spec in comparison, that would have been cool, still a great film though, they dont make them with this kind of atmosphere and slow pace now ,its a shame
@joeylodes The big thing about the first motion picture is that it was NOT meant to be a movie at all, the script for this movie was actually a 26 episode season long story arc. Paramount studios however, saw how well Star Wars had done two years prior and was hoping to get on the newly rekindled sci-fi bandwagon. I believe I even recall reading that Gene Roddenberry opposed the idea saying that there was too much content to be distilled into a feature film.
@ryuail even when I was a kid I enjoyed this movie. The backdrops and the soundtrack were excellent. As I got older I understood more of what was going on from the characters' lines which made it a little better. But the way they put V'ger together along with special effects, sound effects, and Jerry Goldsmith's composing of music made this movie my favorite of the series.
@ryuail i hear ya on all points. however my main point it that this film is the ONLY feature film i have ever fell asleep while watching …. in the movie theatre! and i'm as big a fan as they come. this was simply a poor film. great effects, great score, great sleep aid
@joeylodes I do have to admit, there have been times when insomnia hits and the cure for it is what I call "brainpower movies"; 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek 1, etc. Anything with a lack of action and abundance of thought required.
I loved the gothic kind of feel to v'ger and i'm glad they didnt totally ruin this movie with meaninless CGI like they did for the origanal star wars films these just enhanced the film. Still think its an interesting idea that V'ger could be a starting point for the Borg and that the blast at the end of the film could of been it going back in time. Better than the idea put forward in Legacy which was silly.
@RS250Squid It is the same effect actually. Rather than creating a brand new effect for Gomtuu's energy shockwave defense (or whatever you want to call it), the special effects team just recycled V'ger's evolution/explosion effect.
Didn't somebody here say that that cloud would've stopped the Sun's rotation? You realize how terrifying that sounds? That would make for an excellent effect. And as much as I love the exterior view, I still think V'Ger should never be revealed to the naked eye. It takes away the mystery of Its presence.
@Bla31n ,yeh I agree ,it was better when you couldnt see the whole thing, all the best films leave it to the imagination to fill in the gaps, thats what made this film good
Sadly I knew what V'Ger really was "thanks" to the trailer when it first came out in 1979. Anyone who was into space especially that year knew what the Voyager probes looked like, as they had flown by Jupiter earlier that year and made those amazing discoveries of Io's erupting volcanoes and Europa's surface of ice with a liquid water ocean underneath. Yet I can remember the film audience being surprised when Voyager 6 was revealed. Can anyone say Nomad?
I happen to chance upon an early draft where Vejur was represented by a spider-like robot who called itself "Tasha" and that its master was sent by the Wan (whose identity were never explained). Vejur was revealed to be VOYAGER XVIII, the last human probe launched shortly before the outbreak of WWIII.
There are.... (1,2,3,4,5, oh screw it) FOUR! LIGHTS!!!!!
V'ger is probably the coolest mystery entity in Sci-Fi. Lets face it, first time through, you never would have guessed what v'ger is and what its purpose is.
@jasong19711 Um no. V'ger was capable of energy and matter manipulation, not to mention the cloud being (arguably) 82 AU's in Diamater (2 in some places, but regardless.)..
1au=93 MILLION miles. An astronomical unit is the distance between the sun and earth. If I recall V'Ger was measured at 12 AU in the movie. Big enough to make almost all starfleet officers to shit their pants.
woah, I don't know what I was saying then when I said 196,000 that's less than the distance between the earth and the moon. Anyway, in the director's cut, the size of the cloud was downsized to 2 AUs. I guess 12 was way too astronomical.
However, if I recall correctly, V'Ger is still 82 AUs in the german version of the DE. (the computer translation and the alert announcements are also still present)
@KH990j It is. They realized that 82 AUs was a script SNAFU in terms of plausability and changed "82 AUs" to "over... 2 AUs" because 82 AUs would mean that the cloud would have to have ALMOST engulfed the entire system. To put it in real life perspective, if V'ger parked near the Earth with a cloud diameter of 82 AUs, the cloud would stop short of being near the current position of 90377 Sedna by roughly 6.383 AUs.
61miles.. (100km) not 98000.. our plannet is 12000 diameter.. that would made V´ger 8 times bigger than earth.. gravitic consecuences of it coming close would be apocaliptic
