Don't get your rogy-panties in a bunch just yet, folks! I hear that great restaurant The Bunker has a second location...some place called Berlin. I know, I've never heard of it either ;)
This movie is so so so so bad. It took me 3 breaks to finish it all. Though I did love the Hitler building. "Oh no! Now where are going to go to get all our hitler memorabilia!?"
There are sooooo many things I could say about this episode...shit, I remember watching this one on TV when it first came out. I just....oh the Japan-ity. AND Sonny Chiba! lol Gotta love him.
@AdamsSeed hey at least manos had Torgo! plus manos is at least unintentionally hilarious.
i think with neptune men it was a mix of the film's sheer abysmally dull quality and reliance on endless stock footage, and the fact that the original cut used fairly explicit footage of WW2 bombings, the latter of which apparently pissed them off enough to give the film "special" treatment.
@AdamsSeed Yes, they make it incredibly funny while watching such a bad movie but it isn't long before the first break that the crew start to, well, break. It starts with poor Crow tearfully reading out an editorial about 'The Castle of Fu Manchu' when he'd already done a good job riffing on it, and it all goes downhill from there, leading to one of the most simultaneously sweet and awesome moments of the entire series. It's one of my favourite episodes.
This episode and PRINCE OF SPACE are great, but the anti-Japanese humor is very curious by the standards of MST3K. I rarely see Mike and the bots take such a demeaning attitude towards the culture in the film. Still, great episode.
@JackKlompus13 actually they make equal mockery of British (Gorgo), French (any film with any french character), Maltese (Final Justice), and Canadian (Final sacrifice) culture. so pretty much every foreign culture they show.
which is all fairly equal to the mocking of the US they make.
i think they just really hated this film in particular which made them somewhat more vicious with the riffing
a bit like how their mockery of Joe don baker skyrocketed after he threatened to assault them
@Igarappappa The writers did think that it was actual footage, but someone else noted on the "hitler building" clip elsewhere on youtube that it's actually a model getting blown up and lifted from another movie: the model was detailed enough to duplicate a theater-front which at the time was featuring a documentary of Mein Kampf. Despite a large decoration of Hitler, that was after the war.
@JackKlompus13 I like Japanese culture but it's so WEIRD sometimes. It can be perverted as well, and I can understand why poor Servo was bugging out over 'panties'. I'd be freaked out, too, if I was a guy and watching this movie.
I feel similarly. I don't have any prejudice towards the Japanese, and I definitely appreciate a lot of their artwork, but their culture is very strange. Wait, it's been a few weeks since I watched this episode. Will you remind me who said "panties" in the movie and what Servo's reaction was? I don't remember.
You know? I think this is going to become "The Magnificent Ambersons". In fact, it IS The Magnificent Ambersons right now. It is. You see it, guys? Huh? Huh? The family riding in a sleigh. Yeah, jing jing jing. “There it is: Amberson mansion. Pride of the town. Hot and cold running water upstairs and down.” ...it's not working, guys! It's NOT The Magnificent Ambersons. I don't even LIKE The Magnificent Ambersons!
Mike: You know, I wish the running would never stop. I mean it. I simply can't get enough shots of these kids running. NO REALLY! Literally, there's no limit to how much I wanna see it.
though Nelson promised a quick return of the nanite forces the war for his eyelashes lasted well to December thousands were cut down defending a blasted little patch of Nelson's little t-zone known as folical hill-will you guys knock it off and hey wait a minute can't the nanite's just fix themselfs? oh sure Mike no problem!
Invasion from Neptune is bad enough. But even worse would be horrifyingly horrible horrors coming from Uranus. It would be a real stinker of a situation.
Japanese sci-fi was almost always just plain awful. Surprising considering how ridiculously good other genres of japanese cinema could be.
This might have already been covered in earlier posts, but didn't Pearl explain to Observer in Ep. 816 "Prince of Space" exactly what Observer explains to her at 5:40?
@Kintoun2107 Yep. A bold faced continuity error. Unless you assume that Pearl is flakey enough to have forgotten her own point. Alternately, MST3k might not be that concerned with continuity.
I don't know why....and it could just be me..... but when I first saw the "neptune men" moving towards those boys. I expected them to start singing "oompaa oompaa doopity do
So, i just realized, I think the doctor was supposed to die at 58 and they redubbed it so he just got sick. That would make a lot more dramatic sense than them tryng to pass off a character having a cold as a major sub-plot. Still a crap movie, but hey, that's something.
I haven't seen this one in a while, and for some reason I don't remember it involving that much Deep Hurting. Maybe this time it will be more painful.
@JackKlompus13 You probably don't remember it because it rivals STARFIGHTERS in having nothing happening in it. The "hero" isn't in it for about 3 fourths of the movie, not even in the "climax", which is the most boring part, when the city is being attacked.
No way. It can't rival STARFIGHTERS! It's called INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN, something has to happen! And isn't the climax just like twenty minutes of the same bits of footage edited together?
@JackKlompus13 One would think something would have to happen, but the director took the bold step of showing the same 3 shots over and over again for about 30% of the movie.
@JackKlompus13 Marginally. Normally, the worse the movie, the better the episode, but NEPTUNE MEN is SOOOO boring, even the riffs are hard to come by, whereas PRINCE OF SPACE is funny on its own, with Krankor and the chicken men. Mike & the Bots do a fantastic job with NEPTUNE, and it's a good episode, but PRINCE is a GREAT one, IMO.
I loved both. I think the riffing on INVASION was better, but I think PRINCE OF SPACE had better host segments. In the general sense, I would say INVASION, though. I'll admit to thinking the anti-Japanese humor was kinda funny.
I think the kids have this Space Chief mistaken for another, more effective Space Chief. They declare that it is 'Space Chief' and then ask him his name. Maybe his name WAS Lower Atmosphere Chief and didn't correct the kids when they called him Space Chief.
This, in my opinion, is the most foul, mind-knumbing, and all around WORST film ever shown on MST3K. Onlt Mike and the bots could possibly make this enjoyable
Admittedly I didn't get to see all of Prince of Space since parts of it are deleted, but I'm getting the feeling this is the exact same movie. Mysterious space hero shows up to defend Plucky Children against Galactic Menace, but is actually Handsome Smart Modest Hero. In this case, scientist guy.

Though Nelson promised a quick return of the nanite forces, the war for his eyelashes lasted well into December. Thousands were cut down defending a blasted little patch of Nelson's T-zone known as Follicle Hill.
@HolyHogShit and who can say that 1:14:26 isnt a classic moment in movie madness? i am glad we won WW2, but really... what the fuck would things be like right now if there were happy hitler brand stuff and happy hitler buildings all over the world? and how long would it have taken the germans to turn on the itallians and the japanese? i really wish there was a for real "what if" machine, where we could see the alternate time line of THAT! 4th reich supersoldier cereal flakes, in squid milk.
Hmmm. 0 dislikes as of my viewing? Excellent work, analogkid. Your posting of this has clearly cut down on cases of Roji Pantie Complex! I salute you!
Hey, Analog Kid...after you're done clutching that blade of grass between your teeth...could ya pull your baseball cap up and continue to do the Lord's work you're doing with all these wonderful MSTies? Need any old MSTie tapes to copy? lol
The cast of MST3K said they really hated this movie on levels past what they usually have to deal with. It's because its stock footage seemed to be actual WWII bombing footage. In a SCI-FI CHILDREN'S FILM, no less.

Ah, another Japanese import featuring a goofy superhero and little boys in tight shorts. You can never have too many of these.
It's like Prince of Space except with an hour of stock footage. I love how the Mike and Crow needed an intermission.

I don't think the Neptune Men were evil. They're just trying to blow up Hitler Buildings.

Analog, you are an angel from heaven. Uploading a full episode in one clip AND it's in good quality! Brings a tear to my eye.

Yeah. That's pretty damn heinous.
