If Freddie Mercury would have lived...this would have been something he would have collaborated on to make both Steve and himself immortal. I have chills thinking about that possible concert.
How would Steve and Freddy have artistically combined and melded their own styles in this song?
Thanks for posting this I have been playing this one for ages now and still love it to bits I have even taught myself to play it on the Mandolin ( I usually play guitar ) just wish I had 4 arms and hands my son acompanies me on the drum kit. Steve Earle is one of my all time Country Faves thanx for keeping it real and singing from the heart a big Hats off to you Steve Earle from down under in NZ
This is the only song that has ever stopped construction on a pipeline! We were in VA on the Patriot line and the song came on as the lunch break was ending..... The windows and doors were opened and the whole crew listened. The favorite song among pipeliners!!!!!
Gotta give the man credit on 4 orbital accounts. He was pinned thru the pupils, which allowed him to decide front & center in front of an indifferent audience at best, Fuck you, I'm playin' this 4 me & mine. And it took a big brass set of balls to pull it off. Where's Sid Vicious at the end w/ a .44 to deal w/ this redneck audience?
Hope you are doing well now... and glad that Steve made it through this hell and got clean. Hard for me to watch, having had family go through it. I imagine it is harder for you.
Sorry - read that too quickly. Didn't realize you were talking about his obvious pharmaceutical use. And I do get tired of the right wing trolls who post on his videos.
Nut? He is a very intelligent and thoughtful person... now that he has been sober close to 20 years. My guess is you just disagree with his politics. That is a difference of opinion, not an indicationh e is crazy.
Probably .... certainly looks strung out. This is right before he dropped out of sight for a few years due to the drugs... what he has called his "vacation in the ghetto."
I loved this song for so long, only seen steve live since he got clean. Both times here in scotland..once with Emylou Harris and then with the Dell Mcoury band. I have to say though that heroin or not, that was a brilliant performance. I've just started to learn mandolin and this is inspirational. 'Day at a time' I'll get a wee fraction of his ability.
@nikboyle Yeah, I'm sure the "Bible belt cunts" were analyzing his morality when they chose not to applaud like you think is appropriate. You're obviously more enlightened than the rest of us.
I know he's completely wacked out here, but I'm sorry nobody could be so fascinated with a drug addicts eyes that they couldn't sing a long with him... That Mandolin is epic and so is the song in general, whether he was clean or not, I'd sing with him.
You might be asking a rhetorical question, but in case it was serious, Steve's strung out here. This is right before his heroin abuse got to the point he dropped out of sight for a few years. He got clean in late 1994.
He was only in jail a couple months - and that was in September 94... He essentially quit perfoming because of the drug habit from the late1991 until he was locked up. This performance is 1991. That was what I was referring to by dropping out of sight (not site.)
As a writer of some poetry and songs I have to say this guy is just so good at capturing a mood.....a massive inspiration to me personally...thank you steve
He looks stoned to the gills here but did a helluva version! Too bad the audience was such a bunch of deadbeats. I love hearing alan darveaux playing the dulcimer and doing this song.
What bothers me is when southerners call Steve Earle a scallywag ( a term used for southerners either loyal to the Union during the Civil War's outbreak or for southerners who were Republicans during Reconstruction). The South has never been a politically homogenus region. It was at one time a solidly Democrat before the Civil Rights era and is now majority Republican. There are were enf Republican supporters in the past and today there are many citizens of southern states who are Democrats.
Its almost painful to watch steve like this.... But even against these odds of his addiction he shines ontop as a musician... This song is the best when he does it on his mando.... I just love this song on the Mandolin..
Awesome! So good that he kicked the habit. Respect!
quote: "Steve Earle (in 1991) is fucked up and playing "Copperhead Road" solo on a mandolin and the shit still sounds good as ever, that's a real/true musician."
