  • If Freddie Mercury would have lived...this would have been something he would have collaborated on to make both Steve and himself immortal. I have chills thinking about that possible concert.

How would Steve and Freddy have artistically combined and melded their own styles in this song?

    Mind-Boggling.

That's all I have to say...

  • Fucking Ace. Canada love..

  • This song as it was and should be, by the man at the time...........lived a life and sung from the heart. Fekin'A

  • Thanks for posting this I have been playing this one for ages now and still love it to bits I have even taught myself to play it on the Mandolin ( I usually play guitar ) just wish I had 4 arms and hands my son acompanies me on the drum kit. Steve Earle is one of my all time Country Faves thanx for keeping it real and singing from the heart a big Hats off to you Steve Earle from down under in NZ

  • @Guitargazza1

You may have seen this, but he will be touring Australia and NZ this spring.

  • This is the only song that has ever stopped construction on a pipeline! We were in VA on the Patriot line and the song came on as the lunch break was ending..... The windows and doors were opened and the whole crew listened. The favorite song among pipeliners!!!!!

  • @meandamos1 u know it!!!

  • @yaboystorey13 i think u nailed it! Steve Earle is as artistic.

  • talk about the fucking glory days! that motherfucker is a TRUE badass!

  • Just starting to discover and learn about Steve Earle, and he kinda reminds me of a country Kurt Cobain. I like it.

  • p.s. stay off the cock

    your ass would appreciate it.

  • big cum guzzler that collection of dead bodies, entities....(Thanatocoenosis) thinks he's an English language professor....

  • Mr Earle is the same of all of us. He too, suffers the emotional loss of a friend.

Joey Brohgman- My Bro-- I Love You.

  • bad ass outlaw in my eyes

  • I can't get enough of this song, after so many times , I am glad everyone here thinks like me

  • very well put and definatly a true moon shinner;]

  • Gotta give the man credit on 4 orbital accounts. He was pinned thru the pupils, which allowed him to decide front & center in front of an indifferent audience at best, Fuck you, I'm playin' this 4 me & mine. And it took a big brass set of balls to pull it off. Where's Sid Vicious at the end w/ a .44 to deal w/ this redneck audience?

  • I looked like that in the ninties tweeked the f*&% out. I always hated playing wired.

  • @shobud71

Hope you are doing well now... and glad that Steve made it through this hell and got clean. Hard for me to watch, having had family go through it. I imagine it is harder for you.

  • thumbs up if you think he looks like a young Lemmy

  • Thumbs up if you were raised with shotguns!

  • @darlincommitme

It appears you've misunderstood my colloquial terminology, my apologies for any distress this may have caused

  • @Mickyboy31

Sorry - read that too quickly. Didn't realize you were talking about his obvious pharmaceutical use. And I do get tired of the right wing trolls who post on his videos.

  • he kick ass and still does

  • I know he's of his nut, but he sounds and looks fucking cool.

  • @Mickyboy31

Nut? He is a very intelligent and thoughtful person... now that he has been sober close to 20 years. My guess is you just disagree with his politics. That is a difference of opinion, not an indicationh e is crazy.

  • Cooool :)

  • Was he high on something here?

  • @alabamagoldrush

Probably .... certainly looks strung out. This is right before he dropped out of sight for a few years due to the drugs... what he has called his "vacation in the ghetto."

  • @alabamagoldrush are you fuking joking?

  • Nice

  • Yes

  • I loved this song for so long, only seen steve live since he got clean. Both times here in scotland..once with Emylou Harris and then with the Dell Mcoury band. I have to say though that heroin or not, that was a brilliant performance. I've just started to learn mandolin and this is inspirational. 'Day at a time' I'll get a wee fraction of his ability.

  • Maybe you should check out

    Marcyplayground

    " poppies "

  • This is just classical ART - it all fits, the key turns - Hard. Pity that audience, hope he is better now.

  • @tunefultim

Steve's much better - been clean since 1994. Just released a new album last month.

  • just when you think he couldnt get any better... he does this.......is this guy just amazing or what.....GREAT!!!!!

  • the worst audience!!!! seriosly.. who cares if he's strung out give him# some love.. fucking red neck bible belt cunts

  • @nikboyle Yeah, I'm sure the "Bible belt cunts" were analyzing his morality when they chose not to applaud like you think is appropriate. You're obviously more enlightened than the rest of us.

  • I know he's completely wacked out here, but I'm sorry nobody could be so fascinated with a drug addicts eyes that they couldn't sing a long with him... That Mandolin is epic and so is the song in general, whether he was clean or not, I'd sing with him.

  • @Jinakuus I would have been singing with him there if i would have been able. I was 8 in 91 so i didnt have much of a choice lol.

  • @obeyance I wasn't born ;P lol

  • @whitetailchaser04

    Why am I a freak?

  • whoa incredible

  • hey! hey! hey! hey!

  • Ah, thanks. I was wondering if he was high or something

  • I love this song.

But his eyes. They're just so...empty. Why?

  • @iluvtacos1231

You might be asking a rhetorical question, but in case it was serious, Steve's strung out here. This is right before his heroin abuse got to the point he dropped out of sight for a few years. He got clean in late 1994.

  • @darlincommitme UM HE DIDNT DROP OUT OF SITE HE WENT TO JAIL

  • @CHERYLCDTV

He was only in jail a couple months - and that was in September 94... He essentially quit perfoming because of the drug habit from the late1991 until he was locked up. This performance is 1991. That was what I was referring to by dropping out of sight (not site.)

  • @iluvtacos1231 are you a freak?

  • Know what ? Forget MTV Unplugged , this is a song stripped down to its bones and performed from the heart !

  • This song is timeless and stripped down to nothing more than this brilliant poet and his mandolin I couldnt ask for more.......

  • sonvoltgirl55 watching this makes me so sad there isnt anything in his eyes im glad he lived long enough to get sober

  • watching this is so sad look at his eyes theres nothing in them im glad he lived long enough to get sober

  • HOW COOL IS THIS? AMERICANA AT ITS BEST.

  • DL the audio from this track at tubepull doht cohm.

  • As a writer of some poetry and songs I have to say this guy is just so good at capturing a mood.....a massive inspiration to me personally...thank you steve

  • Wahnsinn! echt geil

  • Stoned no doubt but honest, earthy and raw. Sheer class ;-)

  • That is class !

  • he had "tobstones in his eyes" im glad he pulled through and didnt leave us before his time...we would have been robbed of another legend

  • Killer fucking tune!! Always has been, always will be!!

  • My name is Earle.

  • He looks stoned to the gills here but did a helluva version! Too bad the audience was such a bunch of deadbeats. I love hearing alan darveaux playing the dulcimer and doing this song.

  • What bothers me is when southerners call Steve Earle a scallywag ( a term used for southerners either loyal to the Union during the Civil War's outbreak or for southerners who were Republicans during Reconstruction). The South has never been a politically homogenus region. It was at one time a solidly Democrat before the Civil Rights era and is now majority Republican. There are were enf Republican supporters in the past and today there are many citizens of southern states who are Democrats.

  • Bit bigger now but Class

  • @billyhunchback

Well heroin will keep the weight off, but it is not a recommended diet.

Yep, he's class at whatever size.

  • Steve is a genius, even the brown couldn`t keep his genius shinning through. Class pure Class...

  • wow glad u had this

  • Its almost painful to watch steve like this.... But even against these odds of his addiction he shines ontop as a musician... This song is the best when he does it on his mando.... I just love this song on the Mandolin..

  • I don't know what it is about this song. I really love it. What an awesome raw performance too.

  • gees it is amazing he is standing but he is still a great songwriter no matter what

  • Drugs aint Worth it

  • This is an amazing man and I'm so happy to find this - been lovin this man's music since wayyyy long ago

  • who are the zombies in the audience?

  • big fan of steves but he dosent know if he is on granmas back porch singing or in concert still a great job

  • amazing! even tho he's loaded. a sign of a truly great song when its done solo like this and you don't miss the other instruments

  • ...he was always my idol & inspiration!

  • F'n Brilliant

  • steve is fucked up and playing copperhead road on a mandolin alone and the shit still sounds good as ever, that's a real musician

  • @thinkoutsidethebox22

    You said it bro.

  • @thinkoutsidethebox22

i think itsounds better than the sudio version, more raw and real.

  • Steve Earle has been one of my Favorites since I first bought the HillBilly Highway Cassette back in 83 I think....I Love Him...He can do it ALL!!!!

  • there are musicians who can play brilliantly. they become session musicians. there are guys who feel music brilliantly and we call them legends.Steve is up there with page, dylan, clapton and srv.

  • @bennyfaethebrig

And Townes Van Zandt, and Johnny Cash.

Altho Johnny Cash rules them all.

  • steve earle not only helped revive country back in the 80's but he has helped give birth to a whole new sound with bands like cross candian ragweed ,jason boland, robert earl keen and a whole lot more.steve you rock

  • wow he really looks had in this video, glad he cleaned up ok

  • Almost dead

  • I agree. I have Gen Y kids and they just love our music, always go back to it but they enjoy their stuff as well. This is timeless and I am so pleased that I can now play it on my Mando.

  • He's so into this song! Goosebump-Action on my arms!!!

  • @76Made

I can also sense some anger. He truly rocks/kicks ass. Kudos!

  • this song kicks so much ass!!! i wish music was still made like this instead we got people singing about drugs and bling and how many houses they have. why cant we still have these kinds of songs being played instead of this new shit, thats just my thoughts on it.

  • @BENTTWIG09 Dude - lotsa musicians in Texas play this type of music. And they pretty much all play coveres of Steves music a one time or another :-)

Check out the texas Americana/Outlaw Country scene and also the 'Red Dirt' rockers.

  • pure talent

  • LOVe this song!!!

  • he's wasted out of his tree.......

  • Glad he made it thru, but damn, not bad for a guy wasted on horse...

  • He can't be too messed up, he still playin great. He just smoked about six fattys of kb before he got on stage

  • totaly blowed out of his mind on dope but my god he is great glad your better steve.

  • if you look - ALL the old guys are bobbing their heads like, "damn right youngen!"

  • a handsome son-of-a-fun 40 kgs ago..

  • i like that song- Earle rules!

  • yeah thats real music!

  • this is sick .. tells ya how much he loves to play and how good he is .. Right on

  • The history of modern , rock influenced music , was written in riffs played by folks who were wasted so far off their face they thought they were their own reflection...

I Wish em all recovery and health...

But , Lord , I truly thank em all for what came out of their Waste'lands...

Such a shame the WasteLands played such a huge part in taking so many way too soon.

  • Well said that person.

  • @Dustypilgrim1

    Good post, that.

  • Damn this is awesome, he's as fu534ed up as a mountain goat that got into the shine though! I'm impressed that he could stand, probably did the song just on instinct!

  • He looks wasted, but it sounds brilliant.

  • They don't make em like they used to!

  • God bless Steve Earle...as a recovering addict myself, i have found great inspiration and encouragement in his story and his incredible music....i am so grateful he made it through these terrible times in his life...he is incredible...always...

  • Yes you can ..

thanks man !! for the inspiration

god bless all of you people..

and especially A Steve Earle for writing this damn thing here !!

  • @wwgt thank you for your kindness, since that post i have had 2 relapses, but am back on the road...i think..it breaks my heart to see Steve in this video but, as always am grateful he made it....seeing him in Minneapolis July 23...

  • @princessofhesse I am a successful addict...WINNING! lol ;)

The people's response to government repression.
