i don't know if anyody noticed it but after terry spanked his brother, charles didn't move a muscle out of position until terry was leaving even though he was mad at terry.
Terry says to Charles "Hear me good, I'll do anything to keep us together" (as he promised their mother) "I'll tan your hide every night boy, if that's what it takes" (To keep them together.) To any who are not from North America, "Tanning a hide" is a southern USA expression meaning to spank with a belt.

He told her next time he'd tell their father and their father would take a belt to her if she ever did it again. She knew he was right about that. Charles took his whipping from his older brother out of respect for his brother Terry's position as the "head of the family" now that their mother died and their father ran off.
