@0300gorgous Mine too! Great minds think alike. I had the pleasure of seeing the guy that wrote and performed this tune originally, at the fish quay festival in North Shields (Newcastle) around 12 years ago ish.
Actually, The Adventures of Pete & Pete got me looking, seeing they used the tune in the 2-part season 2 episode "Farewell, My Little Viking" when little Pete and Artie, the Strongest Man in the world were "rowing" across lawns in their land canoe... though hearing it used in the Spongebob episode "Nautical Novice" a few minutes ago got me looking again.
Yes, but for me, never mind playing it at mine or anyones funeral, it should be the new wedding march, as your full bride is being marched up the isle by her dad, shotgun at hand.
can someone plz upload the captain abercrombie theme tune as I used to watch tht as a kid and I miss listing to the theme tune of it. Many thanx Katherine.
I've got a Black Pig model on top of my bookcase... Next to a globe, in amongst an old copy of Treasure Island and an old copy of Gulliver's Travels and two pirate bookends. I keep forgetting who the ship belongs to lol.
did they stop showing this cause it promoted obesecity or sumthin? Cause this is one of those shows that I remember watching when I was like 5 but didn't love it, but now its gone I really miss it!
Composed by the recently departed Johnny Pearson, who also wrote the themes to ITN News at Ten, All Creatures Great & Small, Mary Mungo & Midge, Sporting Superstars, Owen MD, And fronted the Top of The Pops Orchestra for 15-years,
@The1stClan No you don't, because none of them had those names. Look it up, the bloke who invented Captain Pugwash took a couple of newspapers to court for reporting the names incorrectly.
Been meaning to look up this classic & Amusing Series for a while, it's strange that their have been many "Ivor the Engine" / "Clangers" / "Paddington" / &
"Roobarb & Castard" Repeats in the 1990's & early 00's (when i was young) but i've never seen the original "Captain Pugwash" exept clips on Documentarys :(
I knew the Books & CGI Series though & think it's bizarre that it hasn't been shown in such a long time.
Here's to when we Brit's Ruled the Air waves, Arrrrrr ;)
close to the tune stuck in my head really need to figure out, i wish i watched this when i was younger, still suppose its never to late to start i have nothing else to do
@raggyelf Oh, for God's sake! Not THIS old chestnut again. There never were any characters with these names in Captain Pugwash...it was a silly newspaper myth started by The Guardian, for which they later had to print a retraction and apologise to John Ryan, the creator of Pugwash. The cabin boy's name was Tom, not Roger. And there was NEVER a character called Seaman Staines, or anything that sounded remotely like it...the show seemed innocent because it WAS innocent.
I believe this little hornpipe is called 'Sailor Jack'. used to duet it with a mate of mine, guitar and mandolin. Hmm might try to give it a lash on fiddle.
its the reason this show got cancelled. Pugwash is oral sex in australian and Master Baites and Seamen Staines were obvious. im 100% certain those were their names back in the day
There was master mate not bates, barnabas, willy, and tom the cabin boy. there was never a seaman anything. the bbc issued the writer john ryan an apology but it doesn't make up for everyone thinking their names were different and part of a dirty joke
The names were exactly the same in both the books and the Tv series as it was all done by the same guy, when he signed them he did a live demonstration of how the Tv series was done, plus I used to watch it and As i said i know for a fact that it wasnt Roger the cabinboy, that it was Tom as thats my name, and use to be realy proud of that name Just because of Captain Pugwash whe ni was a kid.
I watched it when I was a child as well. To top that off, my brother who is 23 remembers seeing it and also remembers the names. How old are you anyway? You do realise they had to change the names because they were rude.
So did I and im 23, and trust me the whole names being changed as they were rude is an urban myth, the names were never chanegd i have all of the episodes on vhs around here somewhere, will have to dig around n convert and upload one at soem point. The whole they were changed as they were rude came about as a completly wrong rumorur that took on popularity as nobody ever remembered the original names n just believed the 1st thing they heard, without actually going back and checking the facts.
Pugwash is australian slang for oral sex. The name of the episode or what ever about is "Sticky situations" It may just be me or does that seem dirty?
Also, my dad who is in his 50's and would sit and watch episodes with us remembers the names. And he's 50 so hes likely to have been around when the names changed.
Look at us. Kind of arguing over a kids program. Seems weird when you think about it hehe
That is also a part of the myth that was made up, i have asked australians about it before, all of whom confirmed its a load of tosh after giving me a strange look. also my nan who is now nearly 70 remember watching it with me and with my uncle when he was younger and she first heard the myth on a tv quiz and went on a rant at the tv for getting it all wrong and that the names werent right.
It was al made up by students who ahd nothign betetr t do, the papers hw then didnt bother doing their homework and said the same claims, and also the claim it was cancelld by the bbc were not only sued but also printed saying that not ony did they get the names wrong but that it hadnt been cancelled and was infact still airing on BBC and avaliable to buy on vhs.
Is all "friend of a cousings uncles friends dad" stories that claim to have got the news out of the author when drunk 2 as its bull
Yea it does seem weird but well i just don't like Misinformation really haha.
I mean its myths like this that ruin perfectly good television shows and keep peopel and even kids from getting to see classics liek this. How many parents who believed the bollocks of this rumour had denied their kids the chance to see Captain Pugwash as a result? Its almost as bad as the hardly known of and also made up rubbish of the lesbian refferences/tones in The Worst Witch.
@darkslayer909 Nonsense! Pugwash is *not* Australian slang for oral sex. Never was. Never will be. You'd think people would be able to figure these things out in the google age!
@darkslayer909 "Pugwash is australian slang for oral sex"
No it isn't. I have lived in Australia since I was a small child, and I have NEVER heard this supposed "Australian slang word". Neither has anyone else I know. There was NO "Seaman Staines", "Master Bates" or "Roger the cabin boy" in Captain Pugwash...not EVER. The names were NOT changed because they were rude...the names were never rude to begin with. It's all an urban myth...
@Nuttybott Agree. I grew up in Australia as a kid with this on the TV and a pack of dirty-minded kids for friends... my last name was bastardised into "wanker" and that was just a mild version of twisted names we came up for each other... and I have never in my years of tending bars have I heard of a "pugwash" being a euphemism for a bj. If people want creative terms, they ought to go trawl Urban Dictionary.
As someone mentioned earlier, it's an old traditional tune called the Trumpet Hornpipe. Shameless plug alert - as given the treatement by a band called Eat The Rich - search for them on myspace! Only there it is called Roger The Cabinboy!
on reflection, it's very scottish 'country' dance music.
specifically the descending bass line from 0:20 - up till then the bass note just vamps away with the backing - but i've realised when the bass note does this, it means 'we're heading for the end' - much in the same way as the bass drum in a pipe-band does a double 'double-beat' at the end, so everyone knows to stop at the same time - do you see?
I showed my mum this and she said she hadn't heard this for over 40 years, she always watched this and she thought it good to hear it again, thanks for the upload!
