@EddieCat1971 My dad used to make Chieftains at Vickers on the side of the Tyne in Newcastle. The ammo is back there, so it's designed to blow out if it gets hit to save the crew and most of the tank. US tanks, and probably everyone else's, do the same.
@cageordie Did your Dad work there when they switched to Challengers? I think most western tanks of the latest generation do that with the ammo storage, like the M-1, Leclerc, Challenger 2. The Brits were the first with the Chieftain in the 60's. Can't say the same with Russian designed or influenced tanks. They kill the whole crew when hit.

Sorry, but that tank was NOT hit either by a shell or Missile!!! The whole damn thing would have exploded and the turret would have gone 200 feet in the air. If you look carefully there is a box on the back of the tank. It most likely contains some sort of munitions and the engine heat ignited it. The explosion was not that great to indicate a tank shell or missile.

They are floating atop a ring of ball bearings and when an internal explosion happens in a tank the turret blow upwards like a cork from a champagne bottle.

It's a Chieftain Mk5P, deleivered to the Iranians in 1976. If you look carefully you can see a box sitting on the top of the powerpack. It certainly cooked off from the heat of the engine or it went over a land mine.

Actually, the last battle, that I know of, w/ tank on tank action was Desert Storm. I'm not certain whether Georgian and Russian tanks engaged each other, but that is another possibility.
@Exmech2 US tanks were shelling adandoned Iraqi armor at Desert Storm. So did Russians to Georgian. But most enemy tanks are screwed by airpower in both conflicts. Iraqis and Georgians have mastered #1 rule of 3rd world military well. It means as soon as there no civilians but a real army in sight you have to dismantle then dress civilian cloth on and run away from your equipment which is now a target for precision munitions.

Umm, no. T-55s, 62s, and 72s were engaged with M-1s and Bradleys. Lots of Iraqi tanks lost, 1 Bradley lost to tank fire.
The Georgians made the fatal mistake of entering battle without proper anti-aircraft protection. There armored were mostly cut down by cluster munitions and helo fire. Which is why I'm not sure if there was a tank engagment. You seem very ignorant though.

@Dryerbrosracing2 Not sure what you meant that post. Are you referring to the WW2 German Tiger tank? All tank turrets are basically the same. They sit atop the tank and are NOT attached in any way. They are floating atop a ring of ball bearings and when an internal explosion happens in a tank the turret blow upwards like a cork from a champagne bottle.

@thegoosebrain The tigers where feared for there tough armor, and all the munitions being used at this time by this people were not very efficient AKA Old russian surplus and varied countries of origin , It took quite awhile before russian munitions were capable of total damage to there own tank in one direct hit.

Ironically, Iranian military Forces were once strongly aided by U.S. and British goverment. For example, they could purchase western weapons such as F5, F4, Huey Cobra choppers, and, the Chieftain tanks you mentioned.
In addition, even the F14, one of the most costly fighters, were bought by Iranians.
Needless to say, the Iranian revolution turned the whole things around.

Iran did procure several of those tanks from the UK before the revolution. They still use them with upgrades and produce some copies of the design. Now, only 100 of them are in service.
Red Arrow is originally a Russian design. There are Chinese copies known as the HJ series (HJ standing for "Hongjian", which translates to "Red Arrow"). Many countries use them, they are cheap and very effective against modern tanks.

At the same time, they were designing aircraft of their own combining American, Chinese, and Russian technology. Since then, they have already made an original fighter called something like "lightning" or "thunder". I don't know if the Iranians make the engines for their jets or buy them, though.

It seems that the grey box on top of the engine start to burn a secound before the explosion.You can see at 0.09 a flash and the lid blows away .
The other tank has also at the same spot such a box.0.13
May be they should read the operating manual again.

The box right on top of the engine caught on fire. It could've been fuel or ammo, certainly not a place to keep flammables.

It's a Chieftain Mk5P, deleivered to the Iranians in 1976. If you look carefully you can see a box sitting on the top of the powerpack. It certainly cooked off from the heat of the engine or it went over a land mine.

Actually, the last battle, that I know of, w/ tank on tank action was Desert Storm. I'm not certain whether Georgian and Russian tanks engaged each other, but that is another possibility.

@Exmech2 US tanks were shelling adandoned Iraqi armor at Desert Storm. So did Russians to Georgian. But most enemy tanks are screwed by airpower in both conflicts. Iraqis and Georgians have mastered #1 rule of 3rd world military well. It means as soon as there no civilians but a real army in sight you have to dismantle then dress civilian cloth on and run away from your equipment which is now a target for precision munitions.

Umm, no. T-55s, 62s, and 72s were engaged with M-1s and Bradleys. Lots of Iraqi tanks lost, 1 Bradley lost to tank fire.
The Georgians made the fatal mistake of entering battle without proper anti-aircraft protection. There armored were mostly cut down by cluster munitions and helo fire. Which is why I'm not sure if there was a tank engagment. You seem very ignorant though.

It was lacking normal fire control and hull was locally made out of shitty steel vulnerable even to high-caliber MG. This thing bring some shame to original t-72. As for Georgian conflict there is no evidence of using cluster munitions. Russians used mostly rockets and plane cannons to bust armor.

Tanks are shooting tanks in most wars. But to call it tank battles or tank wars you must have it daily on regular basis through it.
As for Chevy i told it is not a licence built. Even a GM won't let one to put it's brand on a grasshopper powered yugo-class pickup made by peasants out of spam cans. So didn't Russians.
