I had my stint with mormonism. For me was the blatant racism that was touted by men that claimed to speak for god. I was never religious in the first place, but the followers seemed nice. I still have LDS friends but there is no way I could in attendance every Sunday, in confidence and dignity and listen to that. I just look at it as an experience I had in my life. If someone as if it were true, I would say "no"
I had a similar experience. I stopped believing in God first because of the evidence from Archeology and Biology that the creation story and many other things in the Bible could not be true but I still thought maybe the Mormon Church was true. I started reading "anti-mormon" stuff only like 2 days later though. Like you I was also suspicious because anti-mormons could be lying too. My favorite website though is mormonthink that lays it all out in a very fair way.
The VAST majority of ex-Mormons leave because of doctrine, and are fully living the standards when they leave. It almost never has anything to do with not living the standards. That's just a convenient lie that Mormons like to tell themselves... I guess it makes them feel superior, somehow.
I really had to chuckle when you told your reaction to the Ford dealer analogy the mormon missionaries gave. This goes into their "resolve concerns" part of the commitment pattern. Anyhow, thanks for your post.
most mormons who leave or become disillusioned become atheists verses leaving and becoming believing christians. you got hijacked by mormons they do not own your salvation. all cults say their the only one. My little brother has the same tribulation as you
There are no errors in the Book of mormons since the book of Mormons have nothing to do with Jesus from the Holy Bible so the Book of Mormons is accurate outside of the Bible. Yet the Holy Bible has the real Jesus not a made up one wich the Book of Mormons is about.
@crackthecorn There are a lot of things you can't prove like US History. A lot of that may not have happen. Also how can you prove the past? It is impossible. Yet I know one thing, have you ever heard that the humans body is made up mostly of water?
@MCAmbitious because noting in history has claim supernatural that was ever proven to be right yes details of history are not clear but the conclusion that it was a mystical cause is not a good way to start a search for truth ..yes the body is made out of mostly water . i answer your question ..but you didn't address mine
@crackthecorn I did answere your question. Also not everything in the Bible is Supernatural. Now since you answere my question that the body is made up of mostly water by saying yes. Well now look in Geneses 2:6 and 2:7. Then tell me what that saids. It should show you one of the facts.
@MCAmbitious because it was not unproven thats why you believe it is true ..thats the jist of your answer or am i wrong , do you know that the salt and warmth of the womb is almost alike the water of the ancient sea , have you seen a great video series on youtube called what genesis got wrong by brettpalmer ...plus the 2 verses you gave me say noting about man being made out of water ..it does say dust of the ground ..the water the bible is talking about is am guessing the sea
@crackthecorn Look, I gave you two verses. The Bible said the mist covered the whole ground so that in itself saids that man was made out of water as well. No matter if the water is mixed in the dust or not it still is consider to be dust. Also the vidoe you are talking about is useless since we do not know what is in the mist that watered the ground. Look you are just going to lose and get fustrated so quit while youa re ahead.
@MCAmbitious hey am asking you as a believer why you believe you gave me a vague answer i reply with my understanding of the reading even provide a source for counter arguments never attacking ...yet your logic is water+dirt=man (this is why people think your position on life is stupid) ..wtf man even a kid knows that is wrong
@crackthecorn Huh? Look dood, Man is made out of that substance dust and water and I just showed you in the bible that saids it by the verse. It does not have to say directly that God made man out of the dust and water. The bible already saids that man is also made out of water to when it said God watered the ground. I gave you one of the facts and you still do not get it. As for a kid knowing anything, well that thing may not be true either so don't use a kid as an insult to me.
@MCAmbitious i know your set in your belief but have you ever challenged them ...from a quick glance of you page your 42 what was the last science book you picked up , am the kid here at 22 you got 20 year of life experience but when i ask a question as a kid and you the adult give me mud for an answer i cant help but feel that you shut your mind to the argument and are just settled in believing as routine , bow your head and submit ooo don't forget the tiding/offering
I am really amused by the comments on this video. Its interesting to view the same conclusions over and over again througout the history of mankind. Religion as a whole has its very own defense mechanism encompassed by human emotion. I am not putting reliogion down in anyway. But in a logical frame of reference.. Its seems to stir up more drama and negativity than positivity... its Just my opinion of coarse. Im sure it wont change anyones mind, Nor is it my intention to do so.
@imationqwest give concrete evidence(s) that it does contradict the Bible.i think and seek for the truth therefore i ask before jumping into conclusions.if you have none then tell yourself to wake up first.
@imationqwest This is so untrue. I'm a convert to the LDS church and I know there are many things written and said about Mormons that are taken out of context, distorted, and just plain false. I read all this stuff over 30 years ago when I was first investigating the Church! I took the time to learn the truth. I wish others would as well. The LDS church has the fulness of the gospel and will bring you closer to Jesus Christ and the Bible than any other church.
You're kidding, right? the bible itself contradicts the bible! it also has god telling Moses how to buy and sell slaves! women are considered property! you can kill your kid if he's disrespectful! Why would you ever trust such a crazy book?
You are just one more example that proves my theory that a startling and disproportionate number of Mormons who leave the church become atheists. The second interesting issue is the large number of people who have left the Church and say they no longer believe in it, yet continue to defend it like a she bear guarding her cubs. My growing conclusion is that it is due to a very effective brain washing, a sort of irrational and involuntary defense mechanism that is built in to the minds of members.
I posted this video over 2 years ago. My feelings have definitely changed a bit--I'm less defensive of the lds church and also less upset by it. I basically consider myself an atheist mormon now, in the sense that Im culturally mormon but don't actually believe in god or mormonsim. I'm a secular mormon :) I'm going to reply to a few of the recent comments that are addressed specifically to me.
@lakayna whoa whoa whoa did you just say atheist are in the same boat as religion ..am sorry but you need a dictionary pronto ..atheist is no belief in god/s ...when you make extraordinary claims like the existence of god you better be prepare with some extraordinary evidence ..also why is their religion fake and not yours ?
Actually if you want to find out about God are you going to go to man? or the word of God the Bible? What you are saying by the ford vs chevy is like saying if you want to find out about a ford go to a used car dealer vs a ford dealer. learnin about God you would not go to man or a church but go to God go to the Bible!
why do Mormons that leave turn atheist? I'm skeptical of this religions claims, but not to believe in a higher power........"I don't see how people could not believe".
It's not an easy church to belong to... we subscribe to the ideas and beliefs that the Bible teaches regarding "Sanctification" and "Purification" and most people let life get in the way. Most find it "Difficult" to live the gospel in it's fullness. Most also find just losing their weekends to church and service as too much to ask its members for.
Allow me to translate so people know what you actually saying.
"it's so hard being so holy and special most people can't handle it, they don't have what it takes to follow the bible properly and to serve god in the way god wants to be served".
@THELDSLIFE if the idea for mormons is to be perfect, then no one will pass that test. Secondly, if the idea is to be perfect, and if you're not, then try your best, why join the church? We are all trying the best we can. You don't need to join a church just to try and be perfect.
@mr41ststreet - we have eons and eternities to get it right. As a joint-heir with Christ, we are enshrouded by his perfection. It is only CHRIST'S perfection which will allow any who have entered into that covenant with him to dwell in the presence of the father. However, the commandment was issued, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father, which is in heaven, is perfect." Matt 5:48
God would give no commandments unto the children of men that would set him up for failure.
@THELDSLIFE How long do we ave to get it right? eternities or just while we are alive? Hebrews 9:27"Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" so when we die that is it we ae judged and end up in one of two places Heaven or Hell for eternity. Matthew 5:48 read it in context read verses 43-48 it will clear this up fo you. Jesus loved everyone the same thus we need to do the same, be like Jesus.
danceattakjp, What about the scientific theories that are pro to the existence of God, science is nothing much but a bunch of theories and they keep changing, and a lot of them contradict each other, maybe praying is what you need in your life.
"science is nothing much but a bunch of theories and they keep changing, and a lot of them contradict each other, maybe praying is what you need in your life."
You win this weeks prize for most retarded person on youtube.
I left that cult after 50 long years and now their members (including my family) treat me like I just went with Satan! I want them to stop brainwashing my children. They are following a cult that was led by a power-hungry child molester.
As a former Mormon, I can relate to your position alot. Two books I would highly recommend: The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. A former Atheist who tried to prove Christianity a fraud, after his wife became a Christian. He looks at the hard evidences of Jesus, & puts the reader in the jury box. The Bible. It is hands down the most printed book on the planet, ever. It teaches nearly 180 degrees opposite of Mormonism though. The very first attack of Satan Genesis 3:1 was to doubt the word of God.
I'm not an atheist, but I can appreciate some of their points. I am really impressed by your honesty! I, too, was LDS. Unfortunately for me it took me, a BIC, MUCH longer to see the fraud of it. I felt/feel the same way about their utterly STUPID Ford/Chevy bologne. Any reasonable person would NOT go to any other dealership for that info. They'd go to Consumer Reports, first, and then talk to FORMER Ford or Chevy owners on the internet, to see why they bailed out of their Ford or Chevy.
I know the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is True. I know that staying in tune with the spirit, having great desire to serve others, repent daily and be faithful helps me to prepare myself for Temple Marriage.
I know that staying faithful, serving others with all my heart, might, mind and strength, marry in the temple, improve every aspects of my life and endure to the end helps me to gain Exaltation, to live with God again.
Faith is something that only pertains to an individual. If you believe that the LDS church is the chosen people, then more power to you. If you are going to become an atheist, then you have nothing to defend. I read everywhere that this or taht other faith is the true one. My experience with the "mormons" was a very pleasant one and I decided to become inactive because I did not agree with the articles of faith (specifially article 8).
You're not alone. How could anyone escape a lifetime of deception and hold onto faith? You mentioned cars! Would the Mormon type of salvation be considered a Chevy or Ford car loan?
Oh my god. I'm going through the same thing you went through when you were 19. I'm 18. You might have an idea how happy I am to have stumbled upon your video in my "google" phase haha.
@pride2Bme Of Latter Day Saints has nothing to do with Jesus written in the bible but Smith's version. Jesus was also dark skin as well while the Jesus in the Latter Day Saints is white. Another thing that is stupid in Latter day Satns is that blacks are curse by their dark skin. Well how about other races that have dark skin? Are they the decendents of Kain as well? There are a lot of people with brown to dark skin not just blacks. The skins is for protection from the Suns harmful rays.
@MCAmbitious LDS love all kind of races for they all children of God. We have missionaries all over the world from any ethnicity. My skin is dark. No problemaaaaa...
@pride2Bme LDS TEACHINGS: There is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages...Those who were faithful in all things there [pre-existence] received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less...All took sides either with Christ or with Satan...The Negro, evidently, is receiving the reward he merits (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 1:61, 65-66;
You're not the only one to have left the Church when he was 19, be atheist and to believe either before or after anti-mormon lies. I did as well. I'm also a convert to the Church, and was a part of several religions before joining. Fortunately a few years after leaving when I was 22, I decided to actually learn the full truth of things, and study all sides, and that's when I saw anti-mormonism did nothing but use a little truth to tell lies, and discovered the Church was literally true.
@leeuniverse Well then you never really left the church. Clearly you weren't honestly looking at all sides with an open mind. Otherwise you would never refer to the "other side" as little truth to tell lies. You are only fooling yourself about your past. Perhaps you were disenchanted by how untrue it really was at some point causing you to leave. Its clear that living the lies of the church are far better for you than the truth in the real world.
FYI... The "discrepancy's" aren't actually discrepancy's, they are a little truth used to tell great lies. If you study FURTHER, you find the "actual" truth, that there are no "actual" discrepancy's. Also, everything on the outside IS "lies", because as I said already, a little truth used to tell lies is still a lie. Only things published by NON-Anti-mormons Non-LDS are not lies. In other words, actual objective non-LDS scholars tend to tell the truth, while anti-mormons do not in anything.
@leeuniverse Like the problems with the adam-god doctrine, polygamy being an eternal truth necessary for salvation in this life, or that fact that the Book of Abraham is a fabrication from egyptian burial texts. You have deceived yourself quite well. It's quite amusing the age old Mormon tactic you use of ad hominem and non-factual blanket statements to make yourself look more credible. What you are really saying is only those who speak favorably of the church are being truthful - such lies!
@MormonUnApologist Boring.... Polygamy is entirely from the Bible and sanctioned by God from the Bible. I don't need the Book of Abraham to show such. You shouldn't confuse your "modern" Biblical beliefs as the same as being Biblical. You simply don't know the Bible. Also, YOU are the LIAR concerning mormonism, and should thus repent of your bearing false witness.
@leeuniverse There's something that you and a lot of Mormons need to understand concerning polygamy. I keep seeing over and over that because polygamy was practiced by Old Testament Israel, it was "sanctioned by God." Nothing could be further from the truth. God NEVER commanded polygamy at any time. Just because the Bible records the actions of people doesn't mean that God wants us to do everything they did. The Bible chronicles both the sin AND obedience of those in it.
@wannawatchu66 You need to read your "Bible" more carefully then if you think God "NEVER" commanded polygamy. Further, while clearly polygamy isn't God's "standard" for most, it is clear from the Bible itself that polygamy WAS commanded and DID/DOES serve God's purposes at times when He commands it. en . fairmormon . org/Polygamy_not_Biblical
I don't really know how to put this.. Well first, sorry I'm a bit late on this.. 7 months and then I come in, ha.. I'm no preacher, bishop, or church leader but why did you become an atheist? I don't think you should stop believing in a higher power because of one religion.. Faith is knowing and believing in a higher power, and after hearing this I can see that you still have faith, even though your mind is telling you that you don't, I can see that your heart still does. Think about it m8.
I dont think that those who leave the LDS church are sinners ou have heart filled with pride. No way!!! The thing is everyone join the Church because of the doctrine itself, however, that seems to me now that lack of repeantence from members who commit crime against others is the main reason for not going to the Church anymore. Well, I would like to discuss it politely if you let me to do that, otherwise you can do like other lds members and censor my comments.
Have you ever gone to a Ford dealer to know something about a Chevy? Do Ford sales people talk about their "competition"? NO. They are trying to sell their own product.
The following story will illustrate something: Ralph Nader blew the whistle, in 1964, on the death trap that was called the Corvair (not Corvette). He had done independent research, into the design flaws of that car. After his report, the Corvair ended its production run.
Jews kept their culture preserved, not "lose it in a book for 1600 years".
Jews didn't lose their language and "reformed" Egyptian. The Jewish language is preserved in history and we have it, we have the original text and all of the derivitaves. You don't have jack except some obviously made up characters that Smith conjured up, looking like some half wit attempt to look important.
Jews didn't make up some racist garbage and put it into the Bible.
Jews have held things that no one can deny. The passover, bar mitzvah, Rosh Hosanna, etc.
None of these key central "ordinances" if you will, are even mentioned in the Book of Mormon! Jews didnt go to America and FORGET to celebrate passover or their 16 year old rite of passage. Jews in Babylon didn't forget. Iranian Jews didn't lose their heritage. But oh wait, the characters that "came here" kept it, while the ones in Israel and Babylon warped it.
And keep in mind, NONE of these groups of restorationalists have a shred of proof.
And in the end all of their teachings NOT found in history are either rediculous (Multiple gods, cain marked with black skin, god came from another planet)
Or
They are "restoring" already REtelling Christian teachings that we ALREADY STILL BELIEVE.
how can you RESTORE something that we have already been accepting from the Bible for 2000 years? What did you restore guys? Nothing.
"I do not wonder at this people having trouble; I do not wonder at some of our sisters having sorrow in what is termed plural marriage; for they do not live so as to have the Spirit and power of God upon them; if they did, they would see its beauty and excellence, and not a word would be said against it from this time henceforth and forever. ... their eye is not on the resurrection and on the kingdom we are looking for when Jesus will come and reign King of nations as he does King of Saints."
Perfect example of the danger of religion. Like Osama Bin Laden justifying murder with scripture. One must justify the scripture, the prophecy first. Or else I can as justifiably make my own up. "I do not wonder that funlds lacks the intellectual capacity to think for himself. Those who fail to acknowledge the existence and reality of the Flying Spaghetti Monster will never comprehend his truth, and they will remain blind to the everpresent noodliness all around them."
your welcome to believe as you wish. God never once said not to do away with polygamy. In fact the choicest bloodlines come from Polygamy - Christ included. If you'd research how monogomy came about, you might be enlightened. Your now more deluded than the mainstream are! Keep researching, ask God for the truth no matter what it is. You will never totally leave morminism alone, wether for good or bad. Joseph only restored that which was before, never to be taken off again.
And yet D&C 132: calls celestial marriage, which is the pairing of temple marriage and polygmay, the 'new and everlasting covenant, didn't it? And yet the church renounced it but then the church was still practicing it, wasn't it? In fact, Joseph F. Smith was even convicted of being a polygamist in 1904, having produced 11 children after the 1890 Manifesto.
The manifesto was given so the government would lighten up. The priesthoof created the church, not the other way around. The church agreed to suspend doing plural marriages for a time and the manifesto was a man issued article stating such... but the priesthood kept quietly living it without the church or government really knowing... as long as they could. And even after the manifestos, those who were already plurally married kept their wives, and kept having children... yes, breaking law still.
And you claim that the priesthood (which all adult male Mormons hold) did it without the priesthood knowing? That's absurd. It's like saying that one member of a band is playing a completely different song than the others and no one notices. Do you really think that Jesus, if he leads the church, would let anyone get away with that?
The fact is that the church played the hokey-pokey with polygamy right from the start, lying and playing games with it.
Dude, you're an atheist, but you still get defensive about Joseph Smith? If you don't believe in god, then do you not think Joseph Smith was a freud? A charlatan. So you're defending him...why?
I was acknowledging the fascinating grip that a fundamentalist religion can have on me, at a gut level. That is the point of expressing this confusion. I also find it fascinating, as you seem to. Of course I think Joseph Smith was a fraud (not a Freud, but is that a Freudian slip or what?). That doesn't mean 18 years of being conditioned to defend him just disappears overnight. For the record, a year and a half after making this video, the defensiveness is gone. Not sure when it left.
How could he be a fraud in any way? He only restored that which was before??? Course he was trying to establish the Kingdom of God that was prophesied to come forth, including all the truth and justice needed to do so. Seek the truth, forget your perceptions, ask God to show you the truth no matter what it is.
It was fraud because this church never existed in the first place. To prop up your flimsy claims of being a restoration, you have to try to claim that there was an 'apostacy,' for which there isn't one shred of evidence. In fact, quite the opposite is true because fanaticism lead to the Crusades, the Inquisition, and a series of wars based on religion.
But you then ask me to check my reason at the door and take your word for it.
Sorry; no can do. God gave me common sense for a reason.
Please, I never ask anyone to toss their reasoning! I spend night and day trying to open the minds and hearts of people even in the church! There are always apostacies, you know not your scriptures. You don't remember the main stories of the book of mormon, a record of a people on this land of promise that built up christ's church many times and lost them all to pride and things of the world. If there is no apostacy, I guess the jews or catholics still hold the truth and keys of God?
Show me the apostacy that allegedly happened and thus required the need for Smith's 'restoration.' There are some 1,900 years for you to work with and you need to demonstrate that there was a world-wide renounciation of God in order to make your claims valid.
He made up stuff, and CALLED it restoration. You believe whatever he said. He could have made up masonry rituals, islamic passages, and anything into this religion, you'd just accept it as "true" because HE made it up. You've devoted yourself, by default, to take anything he says.
Seek the truth you say? Well that requires me to question Smith and examine his prophecies.
Even the Bible says to do that. Jeremiah 20 says to look at a prophet to see.
obviously the catholics and the jews had warped the truth and ordinances. God had to restore it back to the earth, on a continent he saved so that such a just people could be a light unto the world, Christ's church in it's fullness (which much has already been lost by the LDS today) was restored with revelation, truths, ordinances, calling and election... and the country that was supposed to establish a just and fair government... this land for saved for these 2 purposes.
The "ordinances" is a borrowed word used by LDS from Masonry.
Secondly, all of the Jewish rituals from old are recorded in the Bible are still held.
Your arrogance about this country, assuming "It must have been" God, when this country engaged in slavery, pushed a lightskinned superiority philosophy of partiality that your religion adopted as revelation, and engaged in segregation racism.
This is the ignorance that your religion teaches you? My point is made!
I asked God to show me the truth, and here is the truth:
1. black skin was the color of adam/eve
2. Cain was marked with something else, not black skin all over his body.
3. Jews never came here to America
4. Joseph Smith was a con artist.
That is the truth God showed me. It's easy for everyone else to see it to. Only those who start off accepting Joe Smith by default to be "right" no matter what he says... only those will reject God's truth.
Science will prove to you that there were a remnant of jews who came to america around the time of babylonian captivity... check out all the old mounds all over the country. One in Ohio contained an entire hebrew style temple, similar to solomons buried in a mound. All here in the good ol usa. They also found many other hebrew artifacts in other mounds dating back to 600bc. But then again, why should I tell you the proof... you don't sound like the right spirit to be devulging pearls to
Science HAS proven that there were no Jews in America in the 6th century BC.
Science HAS proven that your reformed Egyptian is a lie.
Science HAS proven that your "archaeological evidence" is either fraud, superficial similarity, or insubstantial to draw any conclusion. For example, your MOUND is a mound, not a temple, not some lost mine. Solomon's temple in Israel is not in a mound you idiot, it's the site of the current Arab Mosque AKA Temple mount.
I think you are missing the entire point of my video -- It might be a little unclear, but my story is that I stopped believing in God first. I did not stop believing in god because of organized religion but because I could no longer believe god existed.
I have read view of the Hebrews. There are parallels, but nothing concrete. However, it is proof that the Book of Mormon was not an original idea or an original story. However, that is not what led to my disillusionment. My story is similar to yours, except I did it backwards. I was a returned missionary and got married in the temple when I decided to really study the main criticisms of the church. Needless to say, I stopped believing in the church, then lost faith in God altogether.
I have friends/family on that path, and it sounds difficult. I'm glad I recognized my own belief system when I did. I'm glad I married someone who already knew my atheistic beliefs, so they didn't cause any discord. I think your path is slightly more usual -- but it does make sense in a religion like mormonism, where a personal relationship with god is stressed, that some will do like I did and lose belief in the being first, and then be immediately faced with the loss of the religious belief.
I didn't want to be an atheist at that time because my understanding, my absolute belief that I had not even questioned, was that the only way to be happy was through mormonism. I also had put a lot of future-happiness on the idea of an afterlife. So, in my experience, emotional separation from a belief system does not necessarily entail an immediate release from all of the emotional hangups implanted by that belief system. If that makes sense. I now want much less than I used to. I neither
want strongly to be an atheist or a not-atheist, I just am what I am. I am very happy, and I seem to be able to tie my happiness to atheism, and I am very critical of the way afterlife-belief seems to cause people grief and fear (paradoxically). But this is all conjecture. Perhaps I am merely happy because I am a happy person, and I'd be happy whatever my beliefs. Yet, I was unhappy before. I don't know if it was teenage-ness or mormonism. It had to do with God, directly, so I suspect the latter
That's a terrible analogy with the Ford dealer haha. I used to be a lot more tolerant of people's beliefs until I investigated Mormonism. At the time I thought it was a thoughtful, open-minded thing to do, plus they claim to be the one true church. But the longer I was in it, I just felt psychological torment by giving up my agency and accepting their shaky history. Maybe I'll care less over time, but how do you cope with the fact that people you care about are still Mormon, and lack truth?
It's easier for me because I have a family who are very happy. Also, I don't know that they lack truth, as much as that they put a lot of energy into things that aren't true. What is this truth I have to offer them? That there is no afterlife? I can't claim that as fact; all I can say is, hey, save your 10%! If someone uses Mormonism or any other religion to justify closed-mindedness or policies I disagree with or ideas that suppress others, I think that's the biggest issue. And it is an issue.
So I guess my bigger struggle is watching people make decisions that harm others BECAUSE of religious beliefs. My family does less of this than average, and I'm married to a never-mormon, and I associate with nonmormons and highly educated mormons, so this is not an in-my-face issue. Still, I write my angry letter to the editor here and there.
Regarding your comment about still having a knee jerk reaction @ 1:00, that brainwashing runs deep, doesn't it?
But really, I think a big part of the disappointment and hurt comes from realizing that parents, friends, loved ones- all of these people you have looked up to, they all either lied to you or were duped themselves.
I agree. And when you know they were and are being duped, but that their lives are far too invested in the facade, that's also disappointing - on several levels.
Time has been the biggest factor in making me less hurt or disappointed about all of this. I should take that back. My family being supportive of my decisions, and recognizing that we can still have completely functional and loving relationships despite our differing beliefs, has perhaps been the greatest factor. But time helps too.
Hey dance, I was very conflicted for many years with my religion of origin, Mormonism, and have discovered a pretty solid outlook in the study of Buddhism, as well as Vipassana meditations. I trust it might be a very useful tool, for all ,especially those struggling with the LDS faith aftermath, , in gaining even more of an insight on universal truths and cognitive thinking. All that is positive is innate, not bestowed. Metta Bro!
i know exactly what you went through. I started studying the church so that i could gain a testimony for it but i ended up realizing that the church had way to many problems. i hated the fact that there was so many issues with the church but i finally realized that it was a false church and that god probably did not exhist. i still question the god issue but i am sure that the church is bs.
I have the same story more or less. But it is so much less stress when u let go. Don't worry you r not an evil person if u let go. don't worry u r not the only one.
I like Mormon Stories because I find pro-Mormon and anti-Mormon literature too biased to make a conclusion of what is and isn't fact. Things like Mormon Stories, Sunstone, and a few other books are really neutral and more helpful for me (and surprisingly faith promoting). I found that an interesting paradox that you defended Mormonism, but was pretty sure that there isn't a God. However, I found most atheist just want the truth based on tangible facts, so good luck.
I don't doubt that I may have, but I just listened to my video (which was painful to do) and missed my reference to atheism as a belief. I think, if I said that, I would perhaps like to clarify. Could you tell me what it was I said that conveyed that?
I think that sentence characterizes this entire video pretty well. (: I sort of want to delete it, but it gets a few comments every month, so whatever. Pretty vague and confusing overall.
Just a follow-up to John's reference to the book "View of the Hebrews," published in 1825' every Mormon should read that book. A great follow-up is B.H. Robert's observations about that book. JS has a lot of source materials available that contributed to the BoM, the View of the Hebrews is one of them.
I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today.... The day of the Lamanites is nigh. For years they have been growing delightsome, and they are now becoming white and delightsome, as they were promised. LDS is a huge fallacy - true. You 'know' there's not a God? Wow! You are one smart mofo. You have got to have a tremendous faith to believe in nothing when evidence of a creator and of a loving one is all around you. Study biology and science a little more. Minds much greater than yours and mine (Einstein, Newton, Hawking, etc.) have all concluded that there has to be a prime mover. From there, find the true God.
If i said I 'know' there is not a God it was a mistake. I'm not going to take the time to sift through the video to see if I did, since I don't believe I have ever intentionally said that in my life. sufficient to respond to your comment with an absolute assurance that I do not 'know' there is no god. Your appeal to authority, if the authority figures actually believed as you claim they do, is a logical fallacy.
Second, Wilyam, it requires no faith to be an atheist. I do not run from charging polar bears until I have evidence that one is present. I do not step out of the way of trees that are not there. I, like you, live my life without constant action based on non-evidence. I, unlike you, do this consistently rather than in haphazard form. You do not believe in billions of conceivable ideas for which there is no evidence, but you actively believe in one concept for which there is no shred of evidence.
but it appears that at the end of the day the disagreement is over whether or not there is "evidence of a creator and of a loving one" all around us. I find it comical that you believe that a study of science leads to a belief in magic. It was biology that made it nearly impossible to believe in the god you describe. It is cosmology that cements that impossibility.
What evidence is there of a "loving" God ... AIDS? Cancer in children? Sudden infant death syndrome? I don't know if there's a God, but I know if there is one ... he's neutral at the very best - not kind, or loving.
The very fact that you're able to love and be loved is evidence of a loving God. That is a supernatural quality that has no biological explanation, just as your ability to imagine and rationalize. If God does not love you, then why all the beauty in the world, why all the delicious things to enjoy eating? We could be sustained on grayness and blandness if we only needed to survive. Beauty in creation should direct us to our creator - one of His revelations to us. His ways/thoughts not ours.
I'm sorry, but my ability to love and be loved does not come from God - it comes from me and other beings on this Earth. Decent people on this planet deserve FAR more credit than you give them.
If there was a man who spent 1/2 of his time planting wonderful flowers, saving animals, rainforests, etc, but spent the other half of his time killing innocent women and children, would you still concentrate on the positive? Would the good things he did in his life seriously outweigh the bad?
I've sold cars for years. In the business we are tought word tracks, and how to build truths which are to be stacked apon lies. All dealerships will have their reasons for why you should buy from them. A great salesman will convince you to buy a car that will hurt you physically, emotionally & financially. People will call the roots of the tree "lies" because they know that they are hidden from you, and you cannot whitness otherwise. The fruit will reveal if the tree is good or evil. What does t
I think that once one begins to look at the world through rational eyes rather than superstitious ones he or she is too far gone...completely off the deep end of rational thought.
:) its ok..the seed has been planted and one day it will continue to grow..when that day comes i hope you are not too far gone to realise the promptings you recieve..good luck my brother.
If someone as if it were true, I would say "no"
MrPainlessx 3 weeks ago 2

@MCAmbitious why is the bible true? any proof for your claim or is it just another blind assumption
crackthecorn 9 months ago
@crackthecorn There are a lot of things you can't prove like US History. A lot of that may not have happen. Also how can you prove the past? It is impossible. Yet I know one thing, have you ever heard that the humans body is made up mostly of water?
MCAmbitious 9 months ago
@MCAmbitious because noting in history has claim supernatural that was ever proven to be right yes details of history are not clear but the conclusion that it was a mystical cause is not a good way to start a search for truth ..yes the body is made out of mostly water . i answer your question ..but you didn't address mine
crackthecorn 9 months ago
@crackthecorn I did answere your question. Also not everything in the Bible is Supernatural. Now since you answere my question that the body is made up of mostly water by saying yes. Well now look in Geneses 2:6 and 2:7. Then tell me what that saids. It should show you one of the facts.
MCAmbitious 9 months ago
@MCAmbitious because it was not unproven thats why you believe it is true ..thats the jist of your answer or am i wrong , do you know that the salt and warmth of the womb is almost alike the water of the ancient sea , have you seen a great video series on youtube called what genesis got wrong by brettpalmer ...plus the 2 verses you gave me say noting about man being made out of water ..it does say dust of the ground ..the water the bible is talking about is am guessing the sea
crackthecorn 9 months ago
@crackthecorn Look, I gave you two verses. The Bible said the mist covered the whole ground so that in itself saids that man was made out of water as well. No matter if the water is mixed in the dust or not it still is consider to be dust. Also the vidoe you are talking about is useless since we do not know what is in the mist that watered the ground. Look you are just going to lose and get fustrated so quit while youa re ahead.
MCAmbitious 9 months ago
@MCAmbitious hey am asking you as a believer why you believe you gave me a vague answer i reply with my understanding of the reading even provide a source for counter arguments never attacking ...yet your logic is water+dirt=man (this is why people think your position on life is stupid) ..wtf man even a kid knows that is wrong
crackthecorn 9 months ago
@crackthecorn Huh? Look dood, Man is made out of that substance dust and water and I just showed you in the bible that saids it by the verse. It does not have to say directly that God made man out of the dust and water. The bible already saids that man is also made out of water to when it said God watered the ground. I gave you one of the facts and you still do not get it. As for a kid knowing anything, well that thing may not be true either so don't use a kid as an insult to me.

You're not the only one to have left the Church when he was 19, be atheist and to believe either before or after anti-mormon lies. I did as well. I'm also a convert to the Church, and was a part of several religions before joining. Fortunately a few years after leaving when I was 22, I decided to actually learn the full truth of things, and study all sides, and that's when I saw anti-mormonism did nothing but use a little truth to tell lies, and discovered the Church was literally true.
leeuniverse 1 year ago
@leeuniverse Well then you never really left the church. Clearly you weren't honestly looking at all sides with an open mind. Otherwise you would never refer to the "other side" as little truth to tell lies. You are only fooling yourself about your past. Perhaps you were disenchanted by how untrue it really was at some point causing you to leave. Its clear that living the lies of the church are far better for you than the truth in the real world.
MormonUnApologist 1 year ago
In other words, actual objective non-LDS scholars tend to tell the truth, while anti-mormons do not in anything.
leeuniverse 1 year ago
@leeuniverse Like the problems with the adam-god doctrine, polygamy being an eternal truth necessary for salvation in this life, or that fact that the Book of Abraham is a fabrication from egyptian burial texts. You have deceived yourself quite well. It's quite amusing the age old Mormon tactic you use of ad hominem and non-factual blanket statements to make yourself look more credible. What you are really saying is only those who speak favorably of the church are being truthful - such lies!
MormonUnApologist 1 year ago
@MormonUnApologist Boring.... Polygamy is entirely from the Bible and sanctioned by God from the Bible. I don't need the Book of Abraham to show such. You shouldn't confuse your "modern" Biblical beliefs as the same as being Biblical. You simply don't know the Bible. Also, YOU are the LIAR concerning mormonism, and should thus repent of your bearing false witness.
leeuniverse 1 year ago
@leeuniverse What have I lied about?
MormonUnApologist 1 year ago
@leeuniverse There's something that you and a lot of Mormons need to understand concerning polygamy. I keep seeing over and over that because polygamy was practiced by Old Testament Israel, it was "sanctioned by God." Nothing could be further from the truth. God NEVER commanded polygamy at any time. Just because the Bible records the actions of people doesn't mean that God wants us to do everything they did. The Bible chronicles both the sin AND obedience of those in it.
wannawatchu66 1 year ago
@wannawatchu66 You need to read your "Bible" more carefully then if you think God "NEVER" commanded polygamy. Further, while clearly polygamy isn't God's "standard" for most, it is clear from the Bible itself that polygamy WAS commanded and DID/DOES serve God's purposes at times when He commands it. en . fairmormon . org/Polygamy_not_Biblical

The Ford and Chevy analogy is basically flawed.

"I do not wonder at this people having trouble; I do not wonder at some of our sisters having sorrow in what is termed plural marriage; for they do not live so as to have the Spirit and power of God upon them; if they did, they would see its beauty and excellence, and not a word would be said against it from this time henceforth and forever. ... their eye is not on the resurrection and on the kingdom we are looking for when Jesus will come and reign King of nations as he does King of Saints."
funlds 2 years ago

Joseph only restored that which was before, never to be taken off again.
funlds 2 years ago
And yet D&C 132: calls celestial marriage, which is the pairing of temple marriage and polygmay, the 'new and everlasting covenant, didn't it? And yet the church renounced it but then the church was still practicing it, wasn't it? In fact, Joseph F. Smith was even convicted of being a polygamist in 1904, having produced 11 children after the 1890 Manifesto.
Can you explain this?
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
The manifesto was given so the government would lighten up. The priesthoof created the church, not the other way around. The church agreed to suspend doing plural marriages for a time and the manifesto was a man issued article stating such... but the priesthood kept quietly living it without the church or government really knowing... as long as they could. And even after the manifestos, those who were already plurally married kept their wives, and kept having children... yes, breaking law still.
funlds 2 years ago
And you claim that the priesthood (which all adult male Mormons hold) did it without the priesthood knowing? That's absurd. It's like saying that one member of a band is playing a completely different song than the others and no one notices. Do you really think that Jesus, if he leads the church, would let anyone get away with that?
The fact is that the church played the hokey-pokey with polygamy right from the start, lying and playing games with it.
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
So the church lied about renouncing polygamy? That's not very Christian, is it?
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
Dude, you're an atheist, but you still get defensive about Joseph Smith? If you don't believe in god, then do you not think Joseph Smith was a freud? A charlatan. So you're defending him...why?
magnusjsolberg 2 years ago
I was acknowledging the fascinating grip that a fundamentalist religion can have on me, at a gut level. That is the point of expressing this confusion. I also find it fascinating, as you seem to. Of course I think Joseph Smith was a fraud (not a Freud, but is that a Freudian slip or what?). That doesn't mean 18 years of being conditioned to defend him just disappears overnight. For the record, a year and a half after making this video, the defensiveness is gone. Not sure when it left.
danceattakjg 2 years ago 4
How could he be a fraud in any way? He only restored that which was before??? Course he was trying to establish the Kingdom of God that was prophesied to come forth, including all the truth and justice needed to do so. Seek the truth, forget your perceptions, ask God to show you the truth no matter what it is.
funlds 2 years ago
It was fraud because this church never existed in the first place. To prop up your flimsy claims of being a restoration, you have to try to claim that there was an 'apostacy,' for which there isn't one shred of evidence. In fact, quite the opposite is true because fanaticism lead to the Crusades, the Inquisition, and a series of wars based on religion.
But you then ask me to check my reason at the door and take your word for it.
Sorry; no can do. God gave me common sense for a reason.
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
Please, I never ask anyone to toss their reasoning! I spend night and day trying to open the minds and hearts of people even in the church! There are always apostacies, you know not your scriptures. You don't remember the main stories of the book of mormon, a record of a people on this land of promise that built up christ's church many times and lost them all to pride and things of the world. If there is no apostacy, I guess the jews or catholics still hold the truth and keys of God?
funlds 2 years ago
The main storied of the BOM are fictional and therefore don't apply so no, I give them no weight.
I grew up strict Roman Catholic and you aren't aware of their doctrinal problems, I assume.
As far as the Jews go, they are still important to God because of the role they play in Revelation, specifically the 144,000 messianic Jews of Rev 13.
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
Show me the apostacy that allegedly happened and thus required the need for Smith's 'restoration.' There are some 1,900 years for you to work with and you need to demonstrate that there was a world-wide renounciation of God in order to make your claims valid.
moparmonster1965 2 years ago
Because he didn't RESTORE anything.
Jeremiah 20 says to look at a prophet to see.
osirica 2 years ago
obviously the catholics and the jews had warped the truth and ordinances. God had to restore it back to the earth, on a continent he saved so that such a just people could be a light unto the world, Christ's church in it's fullness (which much has already been lost by the LDS today) was restored with revelation, truths, ordinances, calling and election... and the country that was supposed to establish a just and fair government... this land for saved for these 2 purposes.
funlds 2 years ago
No they haven't warped anything.
My point is made!
osirica 2 years ago
I asked God to show me the truth, and here is the truth:
1. black skin was the color of adam/eve
2. Cain was marked with something else, not black skin all over his body.
3. Jews never came here to America
4. Joseph Smith was a con artist.
That is the truth God showed me. It's easy for everyone else to see it to. Only those who start off accepting Joe Smith by default to be "right" no matter what he says... only those will reject God's truth.
osirica 2 years ago
Science will prove to you that there were a remnant of jews who came to america around the time of babylonian captivity... check out all the old mounds all over the country. One in Ohio contained an entire hebrew style temple, similar to solomons buried in a mound. All here in the good ol usa. They also found many other hebrew artifacts in other mounds dating back to 600bc. But then again, why should I tell you the proof... you don't sound like the right spirit to be devulging pearls to
funlds 2 years ago
Science HAS proven that there were no Jews in America in the 6th century BC.
Science HAS proven that your reformed Egyptian is a lie.
Science HAS proven that your "archaeological evidence" is either fraud, superficial similarity, or insubstantial to draw any conclusion. For example, your MOUND is a mound, not a temple, not some lost mine. Solomon's temple in Israel is not in a mound you idiot, it's the site of the current Arab Mosque AKA Temple mount.

luvutube11 2 years ago
I think you are missing the entire point of my video -- It might be a little unclear, but my story is that I stopped believing in God first. I did not stop believing in god because of organized religion but because I could no longer believe god existed.
danceattakjg 2 years ago
I have read view of the Hebrews. There are parallels, but nothing concrete. However, it is proof that the Book of Mormon was not an original idea or an original story. However, that is not what led to my disillusionment. My story is similar to yours, except I did it backwards. I was a returned missionary and got married in the temple when I decided to really study the main criticisms of the church. Needless to say, I stopped believing in the church, then lost faith in God altogether.
DerekG8383 2 years ago
I have friends/family on that path, and it sounds difficult. I'm glad I recognized my own belief system when I did. I'm glad I married someone who already knew my atheistic beliefs, so they didn't cause any discord. I think your path is slightly more usual -- but it does make sense in a religion like mormonism, where a personal relationship with god is stressed, that some will do like I did and lose belief in the being first, and then be immediately faced with the loss of the religious belief.

@ 3:22- you didn't want to be an atheist? Why not? Do you still not want to be an atheist?
kinduvabigdeal 2 years ago
I didn't want to be an atheist at that time because my understanding, my absolute belief that I had not even questioned, was that the only way to be happy was through mormonism. I also had put a lot of future-happiness on the idea of an afterlife. So, in my experience, emotional separation from a belief system does not necessarily entail an immediate release from all of the emotional hangups implanted by that belief system. If that makes sense. I now want much less than I used to. I neither
danceattakjg 2 years ago
want strongly to be an atheist or a not-atheist, I just am what I am. It had to do with God, directly, so I suspect the latter

mormons suck
alexrad1 2 years ago
That's a terrible analogy with the Ford dealer haha. I used to be a lot more tolerant of people's beliefs until I investigated Mormonism. At the time I thought it was a thoughtful, open-minded thing to do, plus they claim to be the one true church. But the longer I was in it, I just felt psychological torment by giving up my agency and accepting their shaky history. Maybe I'll care less over time, but how do you cope with the fact that people you care about are still Mormon, and lack truth?
mrkenny29 2 years ago
It's easier for me because I have a family who are very happy. Also, I don't know that they lack truth, as much as that they put a lot of energy into things that aren't true. What is this truth I have to offer them? That there is no afterlife? I can't claim that as fact; all I can say is, hey, save your 10%! If someone uses Mormonism or any other religion to justify closed-mindedness or policies I disagree with or ideas that suppress others, I think that's the biggest issue. And it is an issue.
danceattakjg 2 years ago

I hope you find peace in these contradictions.
JAMaddict 2 years ago

Just a follow-up to John's reference to the book "View of the Hebrews," published in 1825' every Mormon should read that book. A great follow-up is B.H. Robert's observations about that book. JS has a lot of source materials available that contributed to the BoM, the View of the Hebrews is one of them.

Wilyam23 3 years ago
If i said I 'know' there is not a God it was a mistake. I'm not going to take the time to sift through the video to see if I did, since I don't believe I have ever intentionally said that in my life. sufficient to respond to your comment with an absolute assurance that I do not 'know' there is no god. Your appeal to authority, if the authority figures actually believed as you claim they do, is a logical fallacy.
danceattakjg 3 years ago
Second, Wilyam, it requires no faith to be an atheist. I do not run from charging polar bears until I have evidence that one is present. I do not step out of the way of trees that are not there. I, like you, live my life without constant action based on non-evidence. I, unlike you, do this consistently rather than in haphazard form. You do not believe in billions of conceivable ideas for which there is no evidence, but you actively believe in one concept for which there is no shred of evidence.
danceattakjg 3 years ago
but it appears that at the end of the day the disagreement is over whether or not there is "evidence of a creator and of a loving one" all around us. I find it comical that you believe that a study of science leads to a belief in magic. It was biology that made it nearly impossible to believe in the god you describe. It is cosmology that cements that impossibility.
danceattakjg 3 years ago
What evidence is there of a "loving" God ... AIDS? Cancer in children? Sudden infant death syndrome? I don't know if there's a God, but I know if there is one ... he's neutral at the very best - not kind, or loving.
oneasha 3 years ago
The very fact that you're able to love and be loved is evidence of a loving God. That is a supernatural quality that has no biological explanation, just as your ability to imagine and rationalize. If God does not love you, then why all the beauty in the world, why all the delicious things to enjoy eating? We could be sustained on grayness and blandness if we only needed to survive. Beauty in creation should direct us to our creator - one of His revelations to us. His ways/thoughts not ours.
Wilyam23 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but my ability to love and be loved does not come from God - it comes from me and other beings on this Earth. Decent people on this planet deserve FAR more credit than you give them.
If there was a man who spent 1/2 of his time planting wonderful flowers, saving animals, rainforests, etc, but spent the other half of his time killing innocent women and children, would you still concentrate on the positive? Would the good things he did in his life seriously outweigh the bad?
