As an original Londoner but born in Bushy near Watford, Herts. in early '46 I just love ELO's music and the very talented Jeff Lynne. Agree with Hall of Fame comments and loved Chicago also. The crap the kids today listen to is unbelievable...some though still like the great music of the 60's and 70's incl my kids who are now 30 somethings.....I wonder if that's conditioning?
my ship pulled into hong kong for liberty , loc mau chow was the border city to red china . i wanted to see it . i took a train up and the passenger cars had empty freight cars between them you could walk through them . i walked onto a empty dark car (night) and sat down in the big doorway on one side . full moon and rice paddies as far as i could see . this song was going OVER AND OVER in my head . we didnt have ipods back then !
ELO along with Rush, Yes, Deep Purple, the CARS, Kiss, Motley Crue, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Blue Oyster Cult, Billy Idol, Boston, Chicago, Styx, Foreigner, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard all belong in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. the list of bands missing out of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is to long, put your votes in. I want to say Motley Crue is going in this year.
@spiderdragon 1969 That's fine and I respect that. There is no denying that KISS is known around the world and always will be...Badfinger...? Unfortunately, not so much. And Madonna? RUBBISH. She is not ROCK.
New ELO fans might like to know: This track was released during a big shift in music. They, among others, were harshly accused of "hopping on the Disco bandwagon". Most artists will admit that if you don't bend within the trends of your time, then you sign your own contract's end. So it's worth noting: ELO expertly sailed through this trend, stamping their unique style all over it (as if they had a choice!) and their real fans were right there by their side for the ride... Thx for the post!
@FluffyBunniesOnFire I have to agree with you on this. I am from that era and some of the dance music of the 70s was phenomenal. I don't care what some people say about it. In 2011, my great niece and some of her friends prefer the dance music of the 70s and early 80s over hip hop and rap. They say it all sounds the same, but Hip Hop and Rap music sounds all the same and I would go as far as saying they are worse. I have found more variety in disco than these two genre.
Like it kid, your group should be in there to, if not it should be nuked, assuming your name relates to a certain Bradford group, if not just ignore me
Just how in the hell is ELO not in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame?!!! What a shame! And why isn't Boston and Def Leppard and KISS and Chicago and the Sweet and Badfinger in? But yet Run DMC and Madonna are in. What a fucking joke!!
im with u on elo. but def leppard and kiss? i dont think so. kiss is terrible and relied heavily on an extremely gay image. and def leppard is shitty glam metal.
@lilfreaker Doesn't matter what their image was. The Rock Hall have 3 criteria for induction. 1-the artist must be 25 years removed from their first album. 2-the artist must be original. 3-the artist must have longevity. KISS was certainly original! Def Leppard helped to start hair metal. They weren't glam. They were hair metal. Glam is make up and silly outfits. Both bands have countless hits and have been together forever. They both deserve to be inducted. In my opinion.
@spiderdragon1969 For fuck sakes, that hall needs to be unestablished. It cannot attribute any great to our opinions as the musicians they choose are caused by selective bias in the twentieth Gregorian century. Why is Stephen Foster, Wolfgang Mozart and John Dowland not in the Hall of Fame? This is how stupid it is.
What Kiss and ABBA have in common (in my opinion) is that they are both shitty groups. Their audience are titillated by the image they vision and no 'substance' in their works.
@SlimeTron5000 You obviously have never been to a KISS concert! KISS was and is more than just music. Check out one of their shows first before insulting them!
Very easy answer to your question: It's the douchbags that somehow (still beyond me who put them there) get to decide who gets in and when. Anyone with enough money and wanted to do it could start a "real" rock and roll Hall of Fame but would just have to label it differently. Quite frankly, I'm really surprised nobody has yet. I feel exactly as you do.
@spiderdragon1969 are u serious!modanna ok i guess run dmc ?wwhhhaaattt?people must be crazy chicago wow thats a shocker kiss, boston arent in wow that is a joke elo is a aquired taste i can see wht they arent and should be in rock n roll hall give it time.
@spiderdragon1969 I know exactly how you feel. There are also artists of the 50s and 60s that paved the way for a tart like Madonna who are not inducted. The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame has completely lost my respect and they have no credibility in my mind. There should be a Music Hall Of Fame which would include all the different types of music. Classical music, rock n roll, popular music, jazz, rythmn and blues, blues, folk music, soul music etc,
@cboncklis If people complain so much about how many rock bands are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame can you imagine the heated arguments that would arise over who is excluded from an all-encompassing genre-agnostic Music Hall of Fame? There would be blood in the streets.
@FluffyBunniesOnFire It does not change the fact that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is accepting artists and groups that do not belong in the Rock and Roll genre. Don't try to make me believe that Madonna belongs there. It's a joke! Donna Love who is basically an artist that had no influence was inducted into the hall and that made them an even bigger joke. If they would make a pop music hall of fame, I could accept it and it would allow more artistists.
@FluffyBunniesOnFire I still stick to my guns that a Music Hall of Fame would be the appropriate thing to do. Connie Francis who's the first popular and sucessful female artist of the rock and roll got the shaft every year. With a Music Hall of Fame, they could have inductees in many different genre of music every year. Nothing is perfect and people will complain, but I am positive the amount of complaining would go down.
@FluffyBunniesOnFire How wonderful it would be to see all the different types of music under one roof. Such a museum would be a much bigger attraction that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame itself. The biggest problem with them is that the selection group/committee has become way too personal in their choices. I read a critic on this suject a few years ago. They do as they wish and their lack of professionalism now shows. With Madonna, they lost my respect and it won't change.
@FluffyBunniesOnFire Madonna might belong in a pop music section of a music hall of fame, but the Rock and Roll section. I know I had a lot to say, but I believe there should be a place where people can go and see the history of music under one roof. It is a beautiful idea and I would go visit such a hall of fame museum. It should be from Classical Music to Hip Hop (when it is old enough to be part of it). It is not about the music I love, but the music that exist.
@leftyzappa You are on youtube. Look up Badfinger and find out. They were an early 70's band that the Beatles signed to their Apple Records Company. They had several top 40 hits but unfortunately the lead singer took his life in '75. The lead guitarist took over the lead singer's duties and he, too, took his life. The band was very good for a short period of time. They deserve to be in the Rock Hall.
The joke AKA the rock and roll hall of fame is run by a couple of unknown, douchebag music execs. Everyone knows it's a pathetic joke. I mean, get real REM but not RUSH?? LMFAO! WTF is REM? What needs to be done is a group of popular record label people (or musicians themselves) need to start a "real" entity for recognizing the best in music and just give it a decent name. Nobody really acknowledges these clowns (rock and roll hof) anyway. But, that's all they'd have to do.
@IceVikingDeathGrip i agree with you, they dont know what theyre doing. Rush , ELO, the CARS, Motley Crue, Yes, Styx, Foreigner, Boston, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult all belong in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. theyre the bands who seem to get skipped over every year.
