Dale nice hands! I figured this out off the albumn years ago, & I heard on the chorus:F#m, G, A7, then 2nd time, F#m G, D7, 3rd time, G, F#m, to D, what do you think?
thanks....using a Strat with Fralin Blues Special pups.....into Xotic RC Booster, Fulldrive 2, Headstrong Lil King amp - 1x12. Thanks for watching and all the best with your music,
Thanks for posting this classic song tutorial Tonedr! I used to marvel at my buddy playing this song back in the late 70's. I always wanted to play this song, and learned it from your video in about 20-30 minutes!
I've seen many lessons on this song, and quite frankly I think you do one of the best jobs of breaking the song down... It was a real help.
I am having a hard time with another song, and thought you might be able to hep... it"s John Hall's "Half Moon" (Done by both Joplin and Orleans). I haven't seen anyone try to tackle that riff... Care to give it a try?
@tonedr from what ive seen you are by far the best teacher , really enjoy your lessons, would like to request a lesson on silent lucidity by queensryche, pretty sure i have it right but i know if you did it it would be right
Very nice instructional video -- it goes to show how great rock 'n roll doesn't need to be shredding guitar licks from exotic modes, nor fancy chord voicings -- just enthusiasm and dead solid rhythm.
You're an outstanding teacher! You made it very clear how to play the piece. I appreciate the slow motion parts of your video. The next thing is to do it myself. I'm a great fan of the Winter Bros for over 40 years and I never managed to play their pieces, perhaps this will be a breakthrough.
Hi Dale, thanks for the reply, jamming buddy of mine was speaking to me couple ' months ago, he had gone to see the Winter Man in Concert, said he could barely play, Band carried him through the set, in which he did manage to play Free Ride, man is very frail and sick, what a tragedy, all the best man.
What a great riff this has! always been a real favourite of mine from way back, never could play it, not till I watched this lesson anyway!thanks for showing me the technique, now all I have to do is get the rythm right..........!
@tonedr hows ur treble bass and mid set on ur amp and what kind of amp btw u can check my channel for my bands cover of it i learned it a very similar way as you
this is so great, I searched for the Freeride- Video just to watch, and now I can play the damn thing;) Thanx so much, tonedr, you really made my day! keep on rockin`!
sounds great man ... the last lick is almost right (9:06) i'd play it on the D string with the open D in between the notes (C B A G riff) (D C D B D A D G riff).
your a great teacher. i absolutely love this tune as well! what amp settings do you recommend to get the best/most accurate or true to the recording sound?
Thanks for watching & your kind words are very appreciated! I wish I had a simple answer but so many different amps & guitars, however to match original a strat is a MUST - amp mostly clean, some verb I really hear no other effects. All the best with your music!
Great lick! Thanks for the lesson, cleared up some questions that I had, parts of how I was playing just didn't sound right. You showed me the proper voicings.
I woke up today and wanted to know free ride... I figured out part of it and then watched your video... I was rockin' it out before I could finish my first cup of coffee... ;-)
One of my commenters turned me on to your site. Very nice! I got a few good tweaks from watching this vid. I agree that Free Ride is one of the all-time greatest riffs. Whenever I play it in a music store, people's ears perk up and heads turn!
i'm running my strat into a Exotic boost pedal and then the Headstrong Lil King amp. I've had the strat a few years now, bought it used in Nashville. Made is USA is about all i know. Gutted it and put RS Guitarworks stuff and and Fralin PUPS. Thanks for yoru kind words and watching the videos!
to be honest i think its his neck, because rosewood gives a more warm tone, and less twangy. And i just think it lacks the twanginess to it and its a little to warm
just because you have the right pickup selection does not mean you have the right tone, i just think it lacks the twanginess of the song and is a little to warm, which i think is due to the neck being rosewood
thanks so much - i appreciate you taking time to check it out. I'm running my strat straight to the Headstrong amp - volume on maybe 2 - boost the treble a bit and some reverb - need new tubes!!
Nice sounding ax! Nice job on the video. Yep. I'll be working on that on my acoustic. I know it won't sound as good, but it'll be fun to play! Thanks!

to be honest i think its his neck, because rosewood gives a more warm tone, and less twangy. And i just think it lacks the twanginess to it and its a little to warm
blueoctober1000 2 years ago
No he's got it right, bridge/mid postion for the cluck.
stratthead 2 years ago
just because you have the right pickup selection does not mean you have the right tone, i just think it lacks the twanginess of the song and is a little to warm, which i think is due to the neck being rosewood
