  • very nice dude !

  • This is one awesome drummer!

  • I wish I could do rolls like that

  • Rick must have influenced Dave Weckl

  • wow ! amazing !

  • I hate people who actually think what they say means anything, no ones an exert anymore it seems, we are all self created experts, fuck the internet sometimes.

  • @arobdrummer Very true. In fact, I think youtube's best drummers are the quiet ones. As for all society in general, people who don't appreciate other's work or some great artistic pieces like these don't really know about talent or drumming or art in general. I consider myself an average drummer and I'm sure I can't reproduce this exactly.

  • @arobdrummer ..its not just the internet ...its talk radio as well ... these " professional " type forums give an illusion of legitimacy to people that have not earned any legitimacy

  • sounds like gadd but stiil fucking simple and deadly. love the linear shit !!

  • sticking of the lick?

  • this is steve gadd's lick !

  • classic stick holder..

  • It may be a Steve Gadd lick, but he can play it very well. I liked it a lot! That's what matters to me. Rick is a very good drummer!!

  • sorry Rick but that is from STEVE GADD and not from you......as simple as that

  • Watcha talkin about, Steve Gadd invented the double stroke roll?

Or how about this: Gary Chaffee invented linear drumming and Gadd and Garibaldi ripped it off and became rich and famous?

    Nonsense.

If someone plays a killer lick, you steal it, learn it, turn it around and make it your own.

Besides, Gadd's main lick uses inverted double strokes not the the regular double strokes used by Latham here.

  • @themancable sticking of the lick?

  • @shadow9Ox

    K-rr-ll-K-R-L-R-K-K-L-R-K-L--R--

  • everything everyone does is from someone else, i'm pretty sure that wasn't from steve gadd either, prolly from someone before him, rick and steve are about the same age anyways though, but you know as well as anyone that we all steal stuff from everything that we hear, if you have an ear that is

  • dude, not sure if i like the snare or not.

  • Yeah, it's pretty 80s with that Ebony head on it. It does sound fat though.

  • They are Aquarian heads.

  • awesome!

  • STOP fighting people. That's enough.

Just stick to the program. Watch the video, comment in a GOOD way, and don't make any more negative comments, or I'll start to ease them.

Please... give me a break. Seriously.

  • @TheHitman1990 Erase* Lol, just saying.

AND YEAH GUYS!!! CHILL THE EFF DOWN! :)

  • ah right. yeah in music gcse the teacher told us no matter what the song is, syncopation is always an answer. cool to know what it means now though

  • Yes, your teacher is correct about syncopation, but here is the rub so to speak. There is only me, and maybe 5 or 6 others that know, and I'm not sure they really know, but music can only be rhythm, pitch and accent. It can never ever be anything else. The irony is, all three work in the exact same way. Not a single stitch of difference between the three, basically. I can syncopate something, but in an odd ball sort of way, I can pitch something to create the some sort of manipulation.

  • I hear anything but a "grove". I hear tons of rhythm, but not a single bit of grove. A "grove" is something that makes a person want to move their body. A grove is either made or it is not. I can force myself to move my body', and all my body's limbs in time, to what you are doing here, but then that really is not a grove at all, is it? I will give a hint. Tick tock. Music can only be three things. Rhythm, pitch and accent. It is a combination of these three things that make a grove. Flame away.

  • Rhythm, pitch and accent. It is a combination of these three things that make a grove. Flame away.

or lack thereof too. i think thats what makes a groove, knowing where to not put a note

  • Plop, very good for you. Yes. Where not to put a note. It is called syncopation. It is a big time grove making tool. You are the first person on youtube that I have come across that has actually defined syncopation. In its most clinical definition, syncopation is the not playing of the 1st beat in a two measure phrase. Of course, if one counts half slow, it would be the not playing of the 3rd beat in a one measure phrase. In other ways, syncopation would be the not playing of a tension beat. :)

  • really? thats what synocopation is? iv heard that word so much and never really understood it! thank you very much

  • Woops, I meant to say, syncopation is the not playing of the 1st beat in the second measure of a two measure phrase.

    (1+2+3+4+) (_+2+3+4+) Or

    (1+2+_+4+)

  • I could syncopate the 1st beat in a measure. This was done typically by a lot of grove metal glam bands and such, or by even heave rock bands years ago.

    (_+2+3+4)

This syncopation is used in the Led Zep song, Misty mountain Hop. And most of the songs Zep wrote at that time. They learned to syncopate the 1 beat and used it often. Misty mountain was syncopated to this:

    (_ 2 3+4+)

The strength of what would normally be the 1 beat was shifted to the + of 4. This is critical for all to understand.

  • You've been spelling "groove" wrong the whole time.

  • Yes, I know. I know grove means an orchard or what not. Its not my fault. How do you spell the word "prove". Well fuck me then. I am a musician and the one reason I have never, no matter how hard I try to learn to spell, I never can, Is because I live by my ear. I live for sound, not letters in words that really make no sense at all. This is a video on music, not spelling. Anything else?

  • Hahaha I just love how easily offended people can get on youtube, I'm just f--kin' with ya man.

    No nothing else, have fun!

  • Yes, I know, I didn't at first, but after I posted it and re-read, I did kind of realize. Yes, people are so easily offended on youtube. I have even read people arguing with each other when they actually are in agreement. Its actually a sort of phoneme. Its not a good thing at all. Its not healthy for society, which is now a global thing. Thanks your your comment back to me, and actually. thanks for pointing out the miss spelling as well. :Good luck. )

  • Hey thanks! Good luck to you too as well.

  • Argument is almost always healthy.

  • i don't want to see your resume dude..., if ur writing like you hear..

    @vid : niiiice groove dude

  • That's a Gadd signature. Very well done.

  • Does anyone know what head is on that snare?

  • Evans. Look for his profile and setup in the official web site.

    Best Regards.

  • Cheers for the reply, but on his site, the head is different lol, it looks more like it could be an onyx or hybrid?

  • That's because this video is old, of the 90s. The kit changed. In the present day, he uses Istanbul cymbals and he also changed other sponsors, like Sennheiser, etc.

  • groovy, awesome

  • this guy has one of the best sounding drum sets i've ever heard

  • It does sound like a rhythm Gadd plays, anyways, music and drumming is free!

  • it says, rick latham in the description, that does not mean it isn't you ;)

  • Hahahaha you got me there... but if I were Rick I'd post a lot of unregistered videos of me for sure XP

    Cheers rubynl!

  • if you like this sort of thing you should pick up rick`s book ... advanced funk studies ... this video is , i think , part of the book .

  • Yes, it is.

    Thanx for the tip sweetfly66!

  • funk linear drumming is the shit!!!! it gives you a chance to groove all you want

  • i can hear the gadd influence in your playing :)

    my favorite drummer too

  • Thanx for the comment, but I repeat, the drummer in the video is Rick Latham, not ME.

Please people, read the descriptions!! xD

  • sounds much like steve gadd ;p

  • Yes... there's a funky-jazzy feel in his style.

  • woah! Were they just doubles between the HH and Snare? Sounds awesome

  • woooooooooooo

  • strepitosooooooooooooooo

  • nice shoes! haha! but seriously, nice groove

  • it was hard for anyone not to be influenced during the gadd era

  • 00:15 is such a cool fill idea.

  • That snare sounds awesome! I love his grooves aswell =)

  • His drums are DW (Drum Workshop). At that time, he used Evans drum heads and Sennheiser microphones. You can check all the info at his page.

  • hes damn creative....needs fast doubles n triplets....

  • ahsome

  • ya!

  • Whoa. That kit sounds too good. Its addictive. Need one!

  • Well, you just have to buy a 7-piece Drum Workshop drumkit, with coated Evans drumheads, some Sabian cymbals and sennheiser microphones. Latham is now using Istanbul cymbals actually.

    Thanx for commenting.

  • Smooth, even and tight. Real nice work.

  • Evans EQ1 Full Black Heads. Best Regards!

  • Evans

  • I play open handed style but i think i can find a way. Anything after 14 seconds is ignored. It's the groove that I need!

  • greaaaat groove!!!

  • This sounds groovy indeed, gotta get my hands on one of his books I guess!

  • This is the funkiest thing on youtube. Love this groove/fill

  • Check out some Mike Clark with Paul Jackson if u wanna see funky!!

  • very nice! I can do that. i've got that pattern from one of rick latham's books.

  • very cool (5 stars)

  • Boy do I hate the way he's sitting... why the stool?! Just sit on the floor at that point!

  • If you'd seen how low Vinnie Colaiuta used to sit, you'd be surprised too. Sitting that low makes it hard to play bass drum heel down, but I'm sure that you can get used to it. Whatever works, works.

BTW: does anyone know whether this exact groove is in one of his books?

  • One thing sure, when I hear this groove I hear a Steve Gadd's licks, and a JR's groove with Rufus & Chaka Khan, great stuff anyway.

  • Sounds a lot like a rhytymstudy in the book Future Sounds by David Garibaldi.

  • Would you recommend the Future Sounds book? Thanks

  • yes it is in his Advanced Funk Studies. this is a clip from the dvd that goes with it for extra money. really solid book and dvd...if u practice it seriously it will make anyone a better drummer

  • nice! I like the "50 ways" flavor you had going on in the first part :-) Very smooth...Gadd would be proud.

  • nice upload, thanks (rated)

  • that last lick was sick!

  • that is just great. well done man, u know what's going on.

    very impressed

  • Thanks, but as many people confuse with this... Its not ME playing... its an international drummer RICK LATHAM.

    Best Regards!

  • AKA Youtube user: funkyrick

    =)

  • thats awesome, what kinda snare are you using and what skins are you using on the snare at that time?

  • Thanks rhett875... the snare its a 14" Collector Brass Snare and the skins are Evans EQ1 Full Black Heads. Best Regards!

  • i gave it 5 stars.

  • Thanks MikeyFlorida. Best Regards!

  • sweet Brotha

  • Thanks Brotha ;) I f you liked rate with 5 stars of suscribe to my videos! Best Regards!
